ecclesiastical year numbers, free

Two numbers behind the Easter tables

The first number is a year's position in the 19-year Metonic cycle of the Moon. It is found by dividing the year by 19, keeping the remainder and adding one, so it always runs from 1 to 19; 2026 is number 13. The epact is a related but different idea: it gives the age of the Moon on a reference day near the start of the year, so that classical tables can look up the Paschal full moon without recomputing every lunation from scratch. Both are labels for the year, not dates, which is why this calculator does not return Easter Sunday itself.

How the Gregorian epact is corrected

The calculation starts from the old Julian epact, which follows from the cycle number alone; for 2026 it is 12. The Gregorian reform then subtracts a solar equation, which accounts for the century leap days it dropped, and adds a lunar equation, which corrects the slow drift of the Metonic cycle. Both depend only on the century, and for 2026 they are 15 and 6. A calibration constant of eight is added so the result matches the age of the Moon near the start of the year, giving an epact of 11. Every intermediate value is shown, which helps when teaching why Gregorian Easter differs from the Julian tables.

How is the Gregorian epact defined?

Start from the Julian epact (11 × (G − 1)) mod 30, then apply solar equation S = floor(3(c+1)/4) and lunar equation L = floor((8c+13)/25) with c = floor(year/100): E = J − S + L + 8, reduced to 1..30.

Does this tool return Easter Sunday?

Use the Easter Sunday calculator if you need the feast date.

How is the year's number in the Metonic cycle calculated?

Divide the year by 19, keep the remainder and add one. The result, from 1 to 19, is the year's place in the cycle; for 2026 the remainder is 12, so the year is number 13.

Why is the epact never zero?

Because classical tables never printed a zero. When the arithmetic lands on zero, the calculator reports 30 instead, so the Gregorian epact always falls between 1 and 30.

What are the solar and lunar equations?

They are the two century corrections of the Gregorian reform. The solar equation accounts for the century leap days that were dropped, and the lunar equation corrects the slow drift of the Metonic cycle. For 2026 they are 15 and 6.

What the golden number and epact mean and what the response contains

The epact is a related but different idea: it measures the age of the Moon on a reference day so that tables can look up the Paschal full moon without recomputing lunations from scratch. The Gregorian reform adjusted that raw Julian epact with a solar equation that accounts for dropped century leap days and a lunar equation that corrects the slow drift of the Metonic cycle, then adds a calibration constant of eight so the result matches the age of the Moon near the start of the year. Values of zero from modular arithmetic are mapped to thirty because classical tables never printed zero. This calculator returns the input year, golden_number from one to nineteen, the Gregorian epact from one to thirty, the intermediate julian_epact, the century index, the solar_equation and lunar_equation integers, an algorithm tag, and a short formula reminder. There is no astronomical ephemeris path and no random sampling: the engine either builds exact integers inside the supported year range or rejects the input with invalid_input.

How the year is read and how golden number and epact stay reproducible

Optional leading plus signs on year strings are allowed when they parse as plain integers; embedded spaces, decimal points, hex prefixes, and non-numeric tokens are rejected with a clear message so a bad cell does not become a wrong epact. The preferred field is year for the Gregorian calendar year as an integer from one to nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine, but aliases y, capital Y, and yr are accepted so spreadsheets, query strings, and typed forms can reuse the same contract. Negative intermediate results are normalized with a positive modulo before the zero-to-thirty mapping so JSON goldens never see a negative epact. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical mathematical result inside an automated pipeline without re-implementing the century equations yourself.

Where golden number and epact fit in study, liturgy, and software

Teachers can pre-generate answer keys for modest year ranges without trusting opaque calendar apps that silently switch between Julian and Gregorian epact conventions or print zero instead of thirty. Contest and quiz practice often needs a fast, offline source of these integers so solutions can be checked without reconstructing century equations under time pressure. Product and education tools use the lookup when a learner types a year and the UI must show both the Metonic label and the Gregorian epact beside a short formula. On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog and lets you move from a classroom demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result. Pair it with the Easter Sunday calculator when you need the feast date itself, and with other date endpoints when you are building a small lab of free, deterministic calendar helpers.

What does the golden number and epact calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page. Through the API a successful request costs $0.002; invalid inputs are not charged.

How is the golden number defined?

Golden number G = (year mod 19) + 1. It is an integer from 1 to 19 labelling the year in the Metonic cycle.

What happens if the year is below 1?

The input is rejected with invalid_input. Years below 1 are not supported for golden number and epact computation in this contract.
