Easter Sunday date calculator

Easter Sunday fell on 31 March in 2024 and on 20 April in 2025. Type any year from 1 to 9999 and get the Western Easter Sunday as a full date, plus its month and day, worked out with the classic Gregorian church rule. Free in your browser.

This Easter Sunday date calculator takes a single Gregorian calendar year and returns the date of Western Easter Sunday for that year using the classic Anonymous Gregorian computus, also known as the Meeus–Jones–Butcher integer algorithm. Easter is a movable feast: it falls on the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after 21 March, which in practice lands between 22 March and 25 April inclusive. Small checks you may already know include year 2024 mapping to 31 March, year 2025 mapping to 20 April, and year 2000 mapping to 23 April.

What Gregorian Easter Sunday is and how it is set

Western churches that follow the Gregorian calendar compute Easter Sunday with an ecclesiastical rule that can be reduced to a short chain of integer steps. The result is always a Sunday in late March or April of the civil year you supply: the earliest possible date is 22 March and the latest is 25 April. Orthodox Easter, which follows a Julian-based ecclesiastical calendar and often falls on a different Sunday, is intentionally out of scope.

If you need week numbers, day-of-week labels for arbitrary dates, or multi-format date parsing, use those dedicated tools; this page answers only the Gregorian Easter Sunday for a validated year.

How the year is read and how the computus stays reproducible

Numeric strings with optional leading plus or minus signs are accepted when they parse as integers; decimal points, hex prefixes, and empty strings are rejected with a clear message so a bad cell does not become a wrong feast day. After parsing, the year must be at least one: years below one are rejected because the Gregorian Easter tables and the Anonymous algorithm as published target the proleptic Gregorian year range used here, and this product surface does not invent BCE handling.

The upper bound is nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine to match other calendar helpers in the catalog. From a valid year the engine runs the Anonymous Gregorian steps a through m using only floor division and modulo arithmetic, then derives month as floor of h plus l minus seven m plus one hundred fourteen, all over thirty-one, and day as the remainder of that same linear form plus one. Intermediate values stay ordinary JavaScript safe integers for the entire supported year span.

Where Easter dates fit in planning, education, and software

Schools, churches, and cultural calendars need Easter Sunday before they can place Holy Week, school breaks, and spring holidays that move with the feast. Retail and hospitality teams plan seasonal promotions around the March or April window and want a single authoritative date per year rather than copying wiki tables into spreadsheets.

Developers call the same contract from scripts to seed holiday tables, to generate deterministic test vectors for payroll systems that observe Easter Monday in some jurisdictions, or to satisfy product requirements that demand a computus-backed date rather than a hard-coded list that goes stale after a few years. Educators use the tool to demonstrate how a medieval-looking rule becomes a dozen lines of integer arithmetic, and to show boundary years near the 22 March and 25 April extremes without relying on opaque calculator apps.

Pair it with ISO week or other free deterministic date helpers when you are assembling a small lab of calendar utilities for teaching, compliance, or product features.

What does the Easter Sunday date calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page.

Which algorithm is used?

The Anonymous Gregorian computus (Meeus/Jones/Butcher integer form). It returns Western Gregorian Easter Sunday for the given year.

What happens if the year is below 1?

Years must be integers from 1 to 9999.

Does this compute Orthodox Easter?

No. It only returns Gregorian (Western) Easter Sunday. Orthodox Easter uses a different ecclesiastical calendar and is out of scope.

What date range can Easter fall in?

Gregorian Easter Sunday always falls between 22 March and 25 April inclusive of the year you supply.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

What Gregorian Easter Sunday is and what the response contains

This calculator accepts one required field, year, as an integer from one through nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine, then returns the normalized year, month number three or four, day of month, a YYYY-MM-DD date string, a readable month name, an iso_date echo, the algorithm tag anonymous_gregorian, and a short formula reminder of the computus chain. There is no lunar ephemeris table download, no timezone shift, and no floating approximation of the full moon: either the year is in range and the March or April fields are fully determined, or the request fails with invalid_input. Rejected cases include a missing year, non-integer tokens, years below one, and years above the documented ceiling.

How the year is read and how the computus stays reproducible

The preferred field is year, but aliases y, capital Y, and yr are accepted so spreadsheets, query strings, and typed forms can reuse the same contract without renaming columns. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical Easter date inside an automated pipeline without re-implementing ecclesiastical rules yourself.

Where Easter dates fit in planning, education, and software

On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog and lets you move from a one-off check to a multi-year holiday generator without changing the mathematical result.
