Weight Watchers SmartPoints turn a nutrition label into one integer that raises the cost of calories, saturated fat, and sugar while lowering the cost of protein.

What SmartPoints compute from a nutrition label

The SmartPoints system scores a food from four label values that almost every packaged product already prints: energy in kilocalories, saturated fat in grams, total sugar in grams, and protein in grams, all per serving. Calories, saturated fat, and sugar increase the score; protein decreases it. The published identity is points equals the maximum of zero and the nearest integer of calories divided by fifty, plus saturated fat divided by twelve, plus sugar divided by ten, minus protein divided by five.

Dividing calories by fifty prices energy at two points per hundred kilocalories. Saturated fat is the most expensive gram on the label because twelve grams of sat fat add a full point. Sugar is cheaper per gram than sat fat but still adds a point for every ten grams.

Protein is the only credit: five grams subtract one point, which is why lean chicken, Greek yogurt, and egg whites often land at zero even when they are not calorie-free. After the four terms are summed, the result is rounded to the nearest integer with ordinary half-up rounding and then floored at zero, so a high-protein serving never prints a negative budget.

This capability implements that identity exactly and returns both the integer points value and the unrounded raw total so you can see how close a food sat to the next whole point. It is an unofficial calculator of the published SmartPoints arithmetic; it is not affiliated with WW International and it does not apply Freestyle zero-point food lists or later Points program rules. Use it when you want a transparent, auditable conversion of four nutrients into one score.

Where a SmartPoints calculator earns its keep

Meal-logging apps collect a barcode or a typed label and need a defensible points number before subtracting from a daily budget. Nutrition coaches batch-score client food diaries without spreading spreadsheet formulas that diverge by cell on rounding. Grocery and recipe platforms want to show SmartPoints next to calories so shoppers who still think in the classic program can compare SKUs.

Fitness dashboards can display the four nutrient terms beside the integer so users see why a sugary yogurt costs more than a high-protein one at the same calorie count. Failed validation does not consume balance. Keep requests to one serving, pin the integer points and the raw total in tests, and you get reproducible SmartPoints for coaching portals, catalog pipelines, and edge workers without standing up a branded food database or scraping a third-party tracker.

Meal logging and daily budgets

Convert a serving's calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein into SmartPoints before subtracting from a daily points budget.

Catalog and recipe scoring

Batch-score grocery SKUs or recipe lines with the same published identity so storefronts and meal plans share one number.

Coaching and transparency dashboards

Show clients the integer points plus the four nutrient terms so they see why protein credits a food and sugar raises it.

What happens if a nutrient is negative?

Calories, saturated fat, sugar, and protein must be greater than or equal to zero. Failures are not billed.

Does this include Freestyle zero-point foods?

No. This is an unofficial calculator of the published four-nutrient SmartPoints identity. It does not apply Freestyle zero-point lists or later WW Points program rules.

Can a food score zero points?

Yes. After rounding, the score is floored at zero, so a high-protein, low-sugar serving can return 0 even when calories are not zero.

What is the SmartPoints formula?

Calories divided by 50, plus saturated fat divided by 12, plus sugar divided by 10, minus protein divided by 5. The total is rounded to the nearest whole point and never drops below zero.

Is this the official Weight Watchers calculator?

No. It is an unofficial calculator of the published SmartPoints arithmetic, not affiliated with WW International, and it does not apply the later Points program rules.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

People who track a daily points budget, coaches who log client meals, and product teams that score a grocery catalog all need the same published formula, not a guessed number from a third-party food API. This capability accepts calories, saturated fat in grams, sugar in grams, and protein in grams for one serving, applies the SmartPoints identity, rounds to the nearest whole point, and never returns a negative score. Any nutrient below zero is rejected as invalid_input and is not billed.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Each field must be greater than or equal to zero. Zero is legal—water has no energy, oil has no protein, unsweetened meat has no sugar—so a zero does not fail. Example: one hundred fifty kilocalories, two grams of saturated fat, twelve grams of sugar, and eight grams of protein yield a raw total of about two point seven seven and three SmartPoints. A lean serving with one hundred ten kilocalories, half a gram of sat fat, no sugar, and twenty-three grams of protein floors at zero. POST a JSON body with four required finite numbers: calories in kilocalories per serving, saturated_fat in grams, sugar in grams, and protein in grams. A negative value on any of the four nutrients fails immediately with invalid_input, names the field, and is not billed. Missing fields, empty strings, booleans, and non-finite numbers also fail with invalid_input. Aliases are accepted so existing forms wire in without renaming: kcal, energy_kcal, and calorie map to calories; sat_fat, saturated_fat_g, and satfat map to saturated_fat; sugars, sugar_g, and total_sugar map to sugar; protein_g and protein_grams map to protein. On success the body returns points as a non-negative integer, raw_points as the unrounded sum of the four terms, the echoed nutrient values, the four individual terms calories_term, saturated_fat_term, sugar_term, and protein_term, plus formula, method smartpoints, and unit points.

Where a SmartPoints calculator earns its keep

Pair the result with your own daily allowance and zero-point food list if you are modelling a later program; this endpoint stops at the published four-nutrient identity so product copy stays honest about what was measured.

How are Weight Watchers SmartPoints calculated?

points = max(0, round(calories/50 + saturated_fat/12 + sugar/10 − protein/5)) using kilocalories and grams per serving. The API also returns the unrounded raw_points total.

What does the Weight Watchers points calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
