Basketball game score, often abbreviated GmSc, is John Hollinger's one-number summary of a player's box-score line. Raw points hide whether those points came on efficient shooting, whether the player crashed the glass, and whether turnovers and fouls ate the rest of the night. Coaches, beat writers, fantasy managers, scouts, and students therefore want a single index that credits scoring, rebounding, playmaking, and defensive events while charging missed shots, missed free throws, turnovers, and personal fouls. This basketball game score calculator applies the published Hollinger identity: points plus four-tenths of field goals made, minus seven-tenths of field goals attempted, minus four-tenths of missed free throws, plus a rebound term, plus steals, plus seven-tenths of assists, plus seven-tenths of blocks, minus four-tenths of personal fouls, minus turnovers. When only total rebounds are on the sheet, the rebound term is one-half of that total — the equal-weight average of Hollinger's 0.7 offensive and 0.3 defensive coefficients. When offensive rebounds are supplied, the calculator uses 0.7 times offensive boards plus 0.3 times defensive boards.

What basketball game score measures and how Hollinger weights the box

Basketball game score answers a comparison question that a raw point total cannot: how valuable was this box-score line once shooting efficiency, rebounding, playmaking, steals, blocks, turnovers, and fouls are all in the same units? John Hollinger published the weights that newspapers and basketball-reference tables still print. Points enter at face value.

Each made field goal adds 0.4 because a make is better than the same points from fewer attempts, while each field-goal attempt subtracts 0.7 so a cold night of bricks is punished. Missed free throws subtract 0.4 each, as free throws attempted minus free throws made. Offensive rebounds are worth 0.7 and defensive rebounds 0.3; when a recap only lists total rebounds, this calculator uses 0.5 times that total, the equal-weight average of those two coefficients.

Steals add a full point. Assists and blocks add 0.7 each. Personal fouls subtract 0.4.

Turnovers subtract 1.0. The result is not a PER, not a plus-minus, and not a win-share. It is a single-game box-score index, typically printed to one decimal place, that lets two nights sit on the same scale.

A 40-point game on 30 bricks can score below a 22-point game with dimes, boards, and a clean shooting night. Zero on every counting stat is a legal 0.0, not missing data.

Where a basketball game score calculator earns its keep

Youth coaches and high-school scorekeepers need a reproducible game score so a gym recap, a tournament bracket, and a parent spreadsheet never disagree on whether a 24-point night on 9-of-18 shooting was actually the better line than a 28-point night on 8-of-24. A publisher ranking for basketball game score calculator is targeting people who already have a box score and want Hollinger's one-decimal index, not a projection system, not a RAPTOR explainer, and not a lineup plus-minus chart.

Fantasy managers who sit in a weekly waiver review need the same number a public box printed, so they can compare two wings whose point totals look similar but whose turnovers, fouls, and missed free throws are not. Classroom and coaching-certification courses that teach counting stats need an oracle that rejects a negative steal count and still returns 0.0 when a player recorded a zero line, because those two cases are how students confuse no index yet with an index of zero. Failed validation does not consume balance.

Box scores and recap pages

Enter a player's points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, fouls, and shooting line to publish a one-decimal Hollinger game score that matches the box, whether the window is a quarter, a game, or a series.

Fantasy and player-comparison sheets

Convert two scoring nights that look similar on points into game scores that also charge missed shots, turnovers, and fouls, so playing-time and efficiency differences are visible.

How do I calculate basketball game score?

Game score equals points plus 0.4 times field goals made, minus 0.7 times field goals attempted, minus 0.4 times missed free throws, plus a rebound term, plus steals, plus 0.7 times assists, plus 0.7 times blocks, minus 0.4 times fouls, minus turnovers, rounded to one decimal place. Example: 24 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 9-of-18 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line is 22.7.

What happens if a counting stat is negative?

Game score is a weighted sum of box counting stats, so a negative points, rebound, assist, steal, block, turnover, foul, or shooting total is rejected and is not billed.

Why one decimal place instead of a raw weighted sum?

Basketball writes game score to one decimal (22.7, 40.1, 8.0), not as an unrounded weighted sum. The calculator rounds to one decimal and also returns a one-digit text form so 8.0 does not display as 8.

Should I enter offensive rebounds separately?

Only if you have them. With the offensive count, offensive boards weigh 0.7 and defensive boards 0.3. With just the total, the rebound term is half the total, the equal-weight average of those two coefficients.

Is game score the same as PER or plus-minus?

No. Game score is a single-game box-score index, usually printed to one decimal. It is not a PER, not a plus-minus and not win shares, and it does not adjust for minutes, usage or opponent quality.

This endpoint does not estimate minutes, usage, or opponent quality, does not park-adjust, and does not annualize a small sample.

Input contract, rebound split, and response shape

Values must stay within one million so a simulated season or a full career still fits, while pathological billions are rejected. Example: 24 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 9-of-18 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line, with no offensive-rebound split, yields 22.7. Prefer bare integers over formatted strings; percent signs and thousands separators are not parsed as input. POST a JSON body with eleven required non-negative integers and one optional non-negative integer. points is the official point total, with aliases PTS and pts. rebounds is the official total rebound count, with aliases REB, reb, TRB, trb, and boards. assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, and fouls are the matching counting stats, with scorebook aliases AST, STL, BLK, TOV, PF and their lowercase forms. field_goals_made and field_goals_attempted are the field-goal pair, with aliases FGM and FGA; made cannot exceed attempted. free_throws_made and free_throws_attempted are the free-throw pair, with aliases FTM and FTA; made cannot exceed attempted. offensive_rebounds is optional, with aliases ORB and orb; when present it cannot exceed rebounds, and defensive rebounds are total minus offensive. Each field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string. Missing fields, empty strings, non-numeric values, a fractional counting stat, a negative value, a made-over-attempted pair, an offensive rebound count above total rebounds, or a value outside those limits fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. On success the body echoes the required counting stats, returns rebound_term as the rebound contribution used in the sum, rebound_mode as total when the 0.5 coefficient was applied or split when the 0.7/0.3 Hollinger split was applied, game_score as the index rounded to one decimal place, game_score_text as that same value always written with one digit after the decimal so 8.0 does not collapse to 8 in a display, and a formula string you can print next to the numbers. When offensive rebounds were supplied, the body also includes offensive_rebounds and defensive_rebounds. Pricing for a successful item is a flat $0.002.

Where a basketball game score calculator earns its keep

Engineers writing recap and box-score tests pin known-good pairs — 24 points with 10 boards and 9-of-18 as 22.7, a negative point total as invalid_input, and an offensive-rebound split that changes the rebound term from 5.0 to 4.6 — so a reporting library cannot silently treat game score as points plus rebounds. Keep requests small, pin the one-decimal game_score_text in tests, and you get stable basketball arithmetic for widgets, recap pages, and edge workers without standing up a full stats service of your own.

Coaching classes and recap tests

Students and QA pin 24 points with 10 rebounds and 9-of-18 as 22.7, a negative steal as invalid_input, and an offensive-rebound split as the 0.7/0.3 Hollinger term, matching the textbook identity exactly.

How are rebounds treated when I only have the total?

When offensive_rebounds is omitted, the rebound term is 0.5 times total rebounds, the equal-weight average of Hollinger's 0.7 offensive and 0.3 defensive coefficients. When you also send offensive_rebounds, defensive rebounds are total minus offensive and the term becomes 0.7 times offensive plus 0.3 times defensive.
