Planning a language course around CEFR bands is easier when you know the vocabulary gap in concrete numbers, not vague “intermediate” labels. This CEFR vocabulary target tool maps your current level and a higher target level onto a fixed cumulative word ladder, then reports how many new items you still need before the target band’s size is met. Use it when you are choosing textbooks, setting Anki daily caps, briefing tutors, or estimating months of study before a placement or certificate exam. Optional known-word counts override the ladder average if you already track vocabulary size; optional words-per-day rates turn the gap into a day count.

A word ladder that doubles at each level

The Common European Framework of Reference sorts language ability into six levels, from A1 for a basic user to C2 for a proficient one. To turn those labels into a plan, the tool uses a fixed cumulative ladder: 500 words at A1, 1,000 at A2, 2,000 at B1, 4,000 at B2, 8,000 at C1 and 16,000 at C2. Because each band doubles the size of the one before, the step from B1 to B2 costs 2,000 new words while the step from C1 to C2 costs 8,000. The result lists every band on the way, so a long climb can be split into one milestone per term.

How to read the gap without over-reading it

The figures are round planning anchors, not official exam cut scores, and vocabulary is only one part of proficiency. Treat the gap as a budget when you choose textbooks, set a daily limit for new flashcards or brief a tutor. If a placement test already tells you how many words you know, enter that number so the gap starts from your real size instead of the band average. Add a daily pace and the gap becomes a number of days, rounded up so the final words are not left out. The target must sit above your current level; an equal or lower target is refused instead of showing a zero that could pass for success.

CEFR bands and the cumulative vocabulary ladder

The Common European Framework of Reference organises language ability into six main levels from A1 (basic user) through C2 (proficient user). Vocabulary size is only one strand of proficiency—grammar, skills, and domain knowledge also matter—but receptive lexicon size is a practical planning proxy that course designers and self-learners already use. This capability adopts a transparent cumulative ladder: five hundred words at A1, one thousand at A2, two thousand at B1, four thousand at B2, eight thousand at C1, and sixteen thousand at C2.

Those round figures are pedagogical planning anchors, not official CEFR exam cut scores; they double roughly every two bands so the climb from B1 to B2 costs two thousand new items while the climb from C1 to C2 costs eight thousand.

School and tutoring plans

Show parents and learners the per-band steps (A2→B1, B1→B2) so each term has a measurable vocabulary milestone.

How many words do I need from A2 to B2?

On this ladder A2 is 1000 and B2 is 4000, so the gap is 3000 new words if you start at the A2 average.

What vocabulary sizes does each CEFR level use?

They are pedagogical planning anchors, not official exam cut scores.

Are these word counts official CEFR requirements?

No. They are round planning anchors, not official exam cut scores. Vocabulary is only one strand of proficiency, and grammar, skills and subject knowledge matter just as much when you sit a certificate exam.

Can I start from the number of words I actually know?

Yes. If a placement test or your flashcard deck reports your real vocabulary size, enter it and it replaces the band average. Fractional figures are rounded down to whole words before the gap is worked out.

How many days will it take to reach my target level?

Add the number of new words you learn per day and the gap is divided by that pace. The day count is rounded up, so the last few words still get a day in the plan.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

CEFR bands and the cumulative vocabulary ladder

When you submit a current level and a strictly higher target level, the engine looks up both cumulative sizes, subtracts the effective starting size from the target size, and returns the non-negative difference as words_to_learn. The path field lists every band from start through target so you can see intermediate milestones, and level_steps breaks the total gap into per-band increments such as A2 to B1 equals one thousand words and B1 to B2 equals two thousand words. That decomposition helps you stage goals by semester instead of staring only at the final C-level number.

Input contract, overrides, and response shape

Validation failures name the offending field and are not billed. POST a JSON body with two required CEFR level strings: current_level and target_level. Accepted values are A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 in any letter case; aliases such as from and to map to the same fields. The target must sit strictly higher on the ladder than the current level—if they are equal or inverted the task fails with invalid_input rather than returning a silent zero that could be misread as success. Optionally send known_words as a non-negative number when your deck, placement test, or word-list tracker reports a real size different from the ladder average for your band; the engine floors fractional reports to whole words and then uses that figure as the starting size. Optionally send words_per_day as a strictly positive rate; when present, days_needed is the ceiling of words_to_learn divided by that rate, or zero if you already meet the target size. Successful responses echo the normalised levels, ladder_current and target_vocab sizes, known_words used, words_to_learn, already_reached, levels_to_climb, path, level_steps, percent_of_target, a short formula string, a human message, and numbered steps. When a daily rate was supplied, words_per_day and days_needed appear as well; optional fields are omitted rather than set to null.

Study planning, tutoring, and product integrations

Language schools use a CEFR vocabulary target calculator to set weekly new-word quotas that match a student’s stated goal, such as moving from A2 to B1 before an autumn intake. Failed validation does not consume balance. Keep the ladder fixed in your product copy so users understand that the numbers are planning estimates; combine them with skill-based placement when you need full CEFR certification readiness, and use this tool when the question is specifically how large the vocabulary delta is between two bands. Independent learners pair the words_to_learn figure with a spaced-repetition daily cap so Anki or Memrise decks do not overpromise on exam dates. Tutors and coaches open sessions with a shared numeric gap instead of vague progress talk, then adjust known_words as lists grow. LMS plugins and mobile study apps call the same parse endpoint from edge workers because the algorithm is pure arithmetic with no model tokens and no outbound network.

Self-study and SRS daily caps

Translate an A2→B2 goal into a concrete words_to_learn total and optional days_needed from your preferred words_per_day rate.

LMS and language-app APIs

Call a deterministic parse endpoint to compute CEFR vocabulary gaps in onboarding flows without hosting a custom ladder table.

Can the target level be the same as my current level?

No. target_level must be strictly higher than current_level. Equal or lower targets fail with invalid_input so clients do not treat a zero gap as a successful climb.

How does known_words change the result?

When provided, known_words replaces the ladder size for your current level. words_to_learn becomes max(0, target_vocab − known_words), so larger known lists shrink the remaining gap.

What does the CEFR vocabulary target calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
