Covert Bailey body fat calculator

Estimate body fat with only a tape measure and your age: a 28-year-old man with a 34-inch waist, 38-inch hips, 11.5-inch forearm and 6.5-inch wrist comes out at 12% under the Covert Bailey method. Women measure hips, thigh, calf and wrist. Free in your browser.

The Covert Bailey circumference method estimates body fat percentage from a short set of tape measurements and chronological age, without skinfold calipers or lab immersion. Men enter waist, hips, forearm, and wrist; women enter hips, thigh, calf, and wrist. The engine converts centimetre inputs to inches when needed, selects the published coefficient set for age thirty and under versus over thirty, and returns a deterministic body-fat percent plus the formula string used.

What the Covert Bailey method measures and how the four girths become percent fat

Covert Bailey popularised a tape-measure body-fat estimate that needs only a flexible non-stretch tape, sex, and age. Unlike the US Navy equations, which combine height with neck and waist (and hips for women) inside logarithmic density formulas, Bailey uses simple arithmetic on four site circumferences expressed in inches. For men thirty years and younger the estimate is waist plus half the hips minus three times the forearm minus the wrist.

For men over thirty the forearm coefficient softens from three to two point seven while the other terms stay the same. For women thirty and under the estimate is hips plus zero point eight times the upper thigh minus twice the mid-calf minus the wrist. For women over thirty the thigh coefficient becomes one, so the formula reads hips plus thigh minus twice the calf minus the wrist.

Measure hips at the widest point around hips and buttocks with feet a few inches apart, waist at the natural or naval landmark you will re-use every session, forearm at the widest part with the fist clenched, wrist just above the bony protuberance toward the hand, upper thigh at its widest, and calf at mid-calf. Keep the tape parallel to the floor, snug but not compressing soft tissue, and take readings at a consistent time of day.

Treat the result as an educational and field estimate: dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, hydrostatic weighing, and multi-compartment models remain reference methods when clinical decisions require measured composition rather than a circumference prediction.

Tape-measure progress logs for clients

Enter four sex-specific girths, age, and sex after a training block to get a deterministic Covert Bailey body-fat percent for the client log.

Which measurements does the Covert Bailey body fat calculator use?

Men: waist, hips, forearm, and wrist. Women: hips, thigh, calf, and wrist. All four girths plus sex and age are required; optional unit defaults to inches and may be centimetres.

How does age change the Covert Bailey formula?

Age thirty and under uses one coefficient set; age over thirty uses another. For men the forearm coefficient changes from 3 to 2.7; for women the thigh coefficient changes from 0.8 to 1.0.

What happens if a girth or age is missing or not a number?

Sex, age, and the four sex-specific girths must be present and finite; zero or negative measurements are rejected and not billed.

Is this the same as the US Navy or Jackson-Pollock body fat calculators?

No. The US Navy method uses height and neck/waist (and hips for women). Jackson-Pollock uses skinfold calipers. This capability implements Covert Bailey girth formulas only and has its own SEO landing and type.

Can I enter my measurements in centimetres?

Yes. Choose centimetres and every girth is divided by 2.54 before the formula runs, because Covert Bailey published his equations in inches. Inches stay the default if you choose nothing.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

The path is fully offline: no network, no random seed, and no clock, so homework checkers, coaching apps, and prepaid API clients receive identical JSON for the same inputs every time. Missing fields, non-numeric values, and non-positive girths fail with invalid_input and are not billed. Use the free browser tool for field checks and progress logs, or call the API at $0.002 per successful item when pipelines need a stable Covert Bailey contract without re-implementing age-band coefficients.

What the Covert Bailey method measures and how the four girths become percent fat

The response echoes sex, age, the age band label, each girth converted to inches, body fat percent, the method tag covert_bailey, a formula string, and the precision used for rounding.

Input contract, validation rules, and reading the response fields

Male requests must also supply waist and forearm. Female requests must also supply thigh and calf. Optional unit defaults to inches and also accepts inch, inches, cm, centimeter, and centimeters; centimetre values are divided by two point five four before the formula runs so the arithmetic always matches Bailey’s inch-native published forms. POST a JSON object with required sex, age, hips, and wrist, plus the two additional sites that complete the sex-specific quartet. Sex accepts male or female and common short forms such as m, f, man, and woman after case folding; aliases gender and sex_at_birth are also recognized. Age is a positive finite number of years, with aliases age_years and years; values through thirty inclusive use the younger coefficient set, and values above thirty use the over-thirty set. Optional precision, with aliases decimals and dp, chooses zero through twelve decimal places for rounded outputs and defaults to two. Missing fields, empty strings, non-finite numbers, zero or negative age, and zero or negative girths raise invalid_input naming the offending rule; those failures do not consume prepaid balance. On success you receive body_fat_percent for display and logging, age_band as thirty_and_under or over_thirty, unit_input reflecting the unit you sent, each used site as a starred inches field such as waist_in or thigh_in, method always set to covert_bailey, and formula so downstream code can audit coefficients without hard-coding them. Do not confuse this endpoint with the US Navy circumference calculator or with Jackson-Pollock skinfold endpoints: those use different landmarks, different mathematics, and live under separate product pages.

Where a Covert Bailey girth API earns its keep and how pricing works

Coaches and personal trainers use a Covert Bailey body fat calculator when clients already keep a measuring tape in the gym bag and need a reproducible four-site estimate without buying calipers or booking a Bod Pod session. Exercise-physiology courses assign circumference labs and need an oracle that rejects non-positive girths instead of inventing a silent zero-percent result. Progress trackers benefit from the age-band split: a client who crosses thirty years old automatically switches coefficients without a silent formula mismatch. Keep clinical expectations honest—this is not a diagnostic medical device—and pair consistent tape technique with the numbers so site-placement errors are not mistaken for formula bugs. On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, validation failures are not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog: free interactive exploration and a priced, identical automation path. If your workflow already stores body-fat percent and only needs lean mass, fat mass, or basal metabolic rate, use the dedicated composition endpoints rather than re-deriving those quantities here.

Exercise-physiology lab and homework checks

Students verify age-band coefficients and inch-native arithmetic against textbook Covert Bailey forms with stable JSON suitable for grading scripts.

Fitness apps and CI fixtures

Apps and test suites call a pure prepaid endpoint so client UIs and server goldens share the same girth-to-percent contract.

What does the Covert Bailey body fat calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
