Two dice probability

Pick a total from 2 to 12 and see how many of the 36 rolls of two dice produce it: a 7 comes up in 6 ways, so 6/36 or 1/6. You also get the decimal, the percent and every face pair. Free in your browser.

Two fair six-sided dice produce thirty-six equally likely ordered outcomes, from one-plus-one through six-plus-six. This two dice probability calculator takes a target total between two and twelve and counts how many of those thirty-six faces add up to that total, then reports the chance as a fraction of thirty-six — the classic classroom form, such as six thirty-sixths for seven or one thirty-sixth for two or twelve. The same count also yields a reduced fraction, a decimal, a percent, the complementary total that shares the same number of ways, and the ordered face pairs.

The thirty-six-outcome model and why seven is the most likely total

The sample space for two distinguishable fair six-sided dice is the Cartesian product of the face sets one through six with itself: thirty-six ordered pairs, each with probability one thirty-sixth. Treating the dice as ordered is what makes one-plus-six and six-plus-one two different ways to roll a seven; if you treated the dice as an unordered bag you would under-count the mixed pairs and get the wrong probabilities, which is the first mistake students make when they draw a triangle of combinations instead of a six-by-six grid.

The number of ordered pairs that sum to a total t between two and twelve is the triangular table every introductory probability course prints: one way for two, two ways for three, three for four, four for five, five for six, six for seven, then the mirror image back down to one way for twelve.

A compact closed form is ways of t equals six minus the absolute value of t minus seven, which is also the pip-dot count printed on a Catan number token and the height of the classic two-dice histogram. Probability as a fraction of thirty-six therefore means ways of t over thirty-six, not a reduced fraction first: seven is six over thirty-six, two is one over thirty-six, eight is five over thirty-six.

Reducing is optional display sugar — six over thirty-six equals one sixth — but the unreduced denominator of thirty-six is what students, dealers, and board-game tables actually compare side by side. This calculator enumerates the thirty-six faces, counts the matches, and returns both the fraction of thirty-six and the reduced form so a lesson can show either convention without computing a greatest common divisor by hand.

Where two-dice probability shows up in teaching, games, and tables

Secondary-school and college probability units constantly assign the two-dice histogram, the chance of rolling a seven, and the comparison between snake eyes and boxcars; a single trusted oracle that returns the fraction of thirty-six speeds grading, demo setup, and interactive lesson design without a computer-algebra system.

Board games that pay on two six-sided dice — Catan number tokens, Monopoly chance of rolling doubles is a cousin question, many wargame combat tables — all rest on this distribution, and a dedicated two-dice landing matches how people actually search even when a general n-dice engine could compute the same number. Keep requests small, pin the fraction of thirty-six in tests, and you get reproducible answers for homework, LMS plugins, and edge workers without standing up a statistics library of your own.

If you later need n dice, arbitrary faces, or at-least targets, treat those as separate search intents and landings rather than overloading this two-dice page.

Classroom 2d6 histogram checks

Let students submit a total from 2 to 12 and verify ways over 36, including snake eyes (1/36) and seven (6/36), against the textbook grid.

Craps and table-game odds explainers

Show come-out and point odds as a fraction of 36 so the felt count matches the probability the page quotes.

Board-game payout tables

Look up the chance a two-dice total hits for Catan-style tokens, combat charts, or other 2d6 payoff tables without enumerating faces by hand.

What is the probability of rolling a 7 with two dice?

Six of the thirty-six ordered outcomes sum to 7, so the probability is 6/36, which reduces to 1/6. Send total 7 to get the pairs and both fraction forms.

Why is the answer a fraction of 36 instead of a reduced fraction only?

Two fair six-sided dice have 36 equally likely ordered outcomes. Classroom, casino, and board-game tables compare bars on that 36-outcome grid, so the primary result is ways/36. The reduced fraction is included as well.

Are (1,6) and (6,1) counted as two different ways?

Yes. The dice are distinguishable (first die and second die), so mixed pairs are two outcomes. That is why 7 has six ways, not four.

Which totals are least likely with two dice?

2 and 12, because each can only be rolled one way out of 36: double ones and double sixes. Each has a probability of 1/36, against 6/36 for a 7.

What is the complementary total in the result?

It is the total on the other side of 7 that can be rolled the same number of ways. For example, 6 and 8 both come up in 5 ways, while 2 and 12 have just one each.

Totals that are not integers from two through twelve fail with invalid_input instead of a silent zero, so a craps lesson, a Catan pip check, or a homework grader never confuses an impossible sum with a legal but rare one. Successful API calls cost $0.002 per item; validation failures are not billed.

Input contract, response shape, and what happens on a bad total

After parsing, the engine enforces the closed range: one, thirteen, zero, and any other integer outside two through twelve are rejected with a clear message that total must be an integer between two and twelve. That check is intentional and strict. A silent zero-probability success for an impossible sum looks like a legal event that simply never hits, which is the wrong story for a grader and the wrong story for a player who typed thirteen by mistake. Wire the free browser form for homework and table talk, then call the identical contract from scripts when you need bulk checks. POST a JSON body with a single required field named total, or use one of the aliases sum or target. The value must be an integer from two through twelve inclusive and may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string such as seven written in digits. Missing fields, empty strings, booleans, non-numeric text, infinities, and non-integers fail with invalid_input naming the field. On success the body echoes the total; reports ways and total_outcomes of thirty-six; gives probability_fraction as ways over thirty-six; gives probability_reduced after cancelling the greatest common divisor; gives probability and percent rounded for stable goldens; gives complementary_total, which is fourteen minus the total and therefore the other face of the same bar on the histogram; lists the ordered pairs as die1 and die2; and restates the formula. Example: total seven yields six ways, probability_fraction six over thirty-six, probability_reduced one over six, complementary_total seven, and the six pairs one-plus-six through six-plus-one. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.

Where two-dice probability shows up in teaching, games, and tables

Curriculum authors building browser widgets want the same JSON shape free on the page and paid through the API so offline worksheets and online auto-graders stay aligned. Because this capability is a pure parse engine, every successful call costs the published $0.002 base price with no model tokens and no outbound network, and failed validation does not consume balance.

Which totals can two six-sided dice actually roll?

Integers from 2 through 12 inclusive. Any other value, including 1 and 13, is rejected with invalid_input rather than returned as probability zero.

What does the two dice probability calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
