Quantity theory of money calculator
With money of 1000 turning over 5 times and a price level of 2, real output must be 2500, because MV = PQ. Enter any three of money, velocity, prices and output to solve the fourth. Free in your browser.

Students, tutors, exam writers, and analysts need a fast, deterministic way to rearrange that product equation for whichever of the four variables is missing without mixing it up with the equation of exchange in growth rates or with the Cambridge cash-balance form. This quantity theory of money calculator accepts any three positive values among money supply M, velocity V, price level P, and real output Q, returns the solved fourth quantity with product checks MV and PQ, a short formula string, and substitution steps you can place next to homework or LMS answers.
What MV = PQ means and which variable you can solve for
Irving Fisher's equation of exchange states that the money stock multiplied by the number of times money circulates against final goods equals the price level times real transactions or real output. In textbook notation money supply M times velocity V equals price level P times real quantity Q, so MV equals PQ. Velocity is the turnover rate: how many times each unit of money is spent on the measured basket per period.
Price level may be a GDP deflator index, a CPI-style index, or an average price consistent with how Q is measured. Real output Q is real GDP or the real volume of goods and services in that basket. Because the identity is a product of two pairs, any one unknown is found by dividing the known product by the remaining factor on the same side of the rearrange.
Omit money supply and M equals PQ divided by V. Omit velocity and V equals PQ divided by M. Omit price level and P equals MV divided by Q.
Omit real output and Q equals MV divided by P. When all four are known the identity is a consistency check rather than a solve; this calculator requires exactly three inputs and fails clearly if you send two, four, or none.
The classical quantity theory often treats V as stable in the short run and Q as supply-determined near full employment, so changes in M map into P; this tool does not impose those behavioral assumptions—it only rearranges the accounting identity for whatever three numbers you already have from a problem set or a data table.
What to enter and what you get back
Leave the unknown field out or blank so the solver can detect which variable to compute. Optionally send decimals as an integer from zero through twelve (default six) to control half-up rounding on every numeric field. Every provided quantity and every computed result must be strictly greater than zero: zero or negative money, velocity, prices, or real output is rejected because division by zero is undefined and negative quantities are outside the standard QTM classroom domain.
Example: money supply one thousand, velocity five, price level two yields real output two thousand five hundred because Q equals one thousand times five divided by two.
Principles and intermediate macro courses use a quantity theory of money calculator so students can rearrange MV equals PQ for any missing variable without algebra slips or sign errors when the unknown sits in the denominator. Exam generators and LMS plugins need a deterministic oracle that rejects zero divisors and wrong field counts instead of inventing infinity or silently returning null that a buggy grader might treat as correct. Failed validation does not consume balance.
Keep requests small, pin the rounded M, V, P, Q and product fields in tests, and you get reproducible monetary-identity numbers for homework, LMS plugins, and edge workers without standing up a full national-accounts or DSGE pipeline of your own.
What you can do with it
Classroom MV = PQ rearrange checks
Let students enter any three of M, V, P, and Q and verify the solved fourth against textbook worked examples of the quantity theory of money.
LMS and exam auto-grading
Mark quantity-theory items with a deterministic oracle that rejects zero divisors and wrong input counts instead of accepting hollow empty answers.
Macro notebooks and teaching dashboards
Batch-back out implied velocity or price level from money supply, real output, and the remaining known without spreadsheet formula drift.
FAQ
Can I solve for velocity of money?
The solver returns V = (P·Q) / M together with the filled equation.
What happens if I send all four variables or only two?
Exactly three of the four quantities are required so the omitted field is unambiguous.
What does MV = PQ mean?
Money supply times the number of times each unit is spent equals the price level times real output. Both sides measure the same total spending in a period, so knowing three of the four values fixes the last one.
How do I find real output from money, velocity and prices?
Multiply money supply by velocity and divide by the price level. With money of 1000, velocity of 5 and a price level of 2, real output is 1000 × 5 ÷ 2 = 2500.
Does the calculator assume velocity is stable?
No. It only rearranges the identity for the three numbers you give it. The classical view that velocity is stable and output sits near full employment is a separate assumption that the calculator does not impose.

Technical notes
The quantity theory of money is the classic monetary-economics identity that links the stock of money, how often that money turns over, the general price level, and real output: money supply times velocity equals price level times real quantity, written MV equals PQ.
Input contract, response fields, and validation rules
POST a JSON body with exactly three of the four optional numbers: money_supply (aliases m, money, M), velocity (aliases v, money_velocity, V), price_level (aliases p, price, P), and real_output (aliases q, output, quantity, y, real_gdp, Y, Q). Missing the three-of-four rule, non-finite values, empty strings that fail numeric parse, and decimals outside the allowed range fail with invalid_input and are not billed. On success the body returns money_supply, velocity, price_level, and real_output (with short aliases m, v, p, q), solved_for and unknown naming the omitted field, product checks mv and pq plus nominal_output equal to PQ, formula and rearrange strings, a filled equation display, a short message, and ordered steps showing the given values, the identity, the rearrange, and the numerical substitute. Pair the response with your own multi-period table if you need growth rates or percentage changes in M, V, P, or Q; this endpoint solves only the level form of MV equals PQ for a single triple of knowns.
Where a quantity theory of money API earns its keep
Analyst notebooks and teaching dashboards often back out implied velocity from published money stock, price index, and real GDP; pinning that arithmetic in a tiny parse API keeps spreadsheet drift out of the comparison column.
Technical questions
How do I solve MV = PQ with this calculator?
Send exactly three positive numbers among money_supply, velocity, price_level, and real_output; omit the unknown. The API rearranges MV = PQ and returns the solved variable plus product checks and steps.
What is the quantity theory of money equation?
The quantity theory (equation of exchange) states money supply times velocity equals price level times real output: MV = PQ. Nominal spending MV matches nominal output PQ.
What does the quantity theory of money calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
