Equivalent race times calculator

A 10K in 40:00 is worth about 19:11 over 5K, 3:04:00 for the marathon and 3:40:17 for 50K. Enter one race result to see equivalent times and paces for eight common distances at once. Free in your browser.

Runners, coaches, and multi-distance planners often need to translate a single race result into realistic expectations for other standard distances. A strong 10K does not scale linearly to a marathon, and a mile PR is not half a 5K. This equivalent race times calculator applies a pure endurance-exponent power law to one known distance and finish time, then returns a full table of equivalent finishing times for common races from the mile through 50K. The default exponent follows the classic Riegel value of 1.06, and you may supply another positive exponent when your training model uses a different endurance decay. Everything runs offline and deterministically: no network calls, no randomness, and no clock dependency.

Why equivalent race times use an endurance exponent

Linear scaling of pace ignores the well-known fact that average speed falls as race distance grows. Physiologically, longer efforts recruit more aerobic economy constraints, glycogen management, heat load, and muscular durability, so the same athlete finishes farther races at a slower per-kilometre rate even when fully trained for the event. Empirical race-prediction models capture that decay with a power law of the form T2 equals T1 times the ratio of distances raised to an endurance exponent e.

When e is greater than one, time grows slightly faster than distance, which is exactly the pattern observed in large race datasets for well-trained runners over common road distances. The classic Riegel exponent 1.06 is a widely cited default: it is simple enough for hand calculation, stable enough for coaching tables, and close enough to observed depth for recreational through sub-elite performances when distances stay inside roughly the mile to marathon band. This capability materialises that model as a multi-row table rather than a single custom target prediction.

You supply one known result; the engine evaluates the power law against a fixed ladder of common distances (mile, 5K, 10K, 15K, half marathon, 30K, marathon, and 50K) so a coach or athlete sees the whole equivalency chart at once. That chart answers the search intent behind equivalent race times calculator: not one prediction for a typed target, but a ready comparison set for planning, goal-setting, and cross-checking training specificity. The formula remains transparent in the response so you can audit every row against the same exponent you chose.

Where equivalent race times help

Training plan generators use the half-marathon and marathon rows as goal anchors after a 10K test week, then recompute when the athlete improves. Multi-sport and ultra crews may raise or lower the exponent slightly to reflect greater or lesser endurance decay and still keep the same deterministic contract. Pin the rounded times in tests, keep distance and time positive, and you get reproducible equivalency tables for LMS plugins, coaching SaaS, race-preview pages, and edge workers without standing up sports-science infrastructure of your own.

Prefer this multi-distance table when the user wants a full ladder; prefer a single-target predictor only when they already know one custom distance and need one number.

When an athlete logs a new result, regenerate equivalent finish times across mile through 50K with the same endurance exponent.

How does the equivalent race times calculator work?

Send a positive race distance and finish time in seconds.

Can I change the endurance exponent?

Yes. Pass a positive finite exponent (classic Riegel is 1.06).

What happens with zero or negative distance or time?

Non-positive inputs are invalid for race equivalency and are not billed.

What marathon time matches a 40-minute 10K?

About 3:04:00 with the default exponent of 1.06, at a pace near 4:22 per kilometre. The same table puts the half marathon at 1:28:15 and the mile at 5:46.

Can I enter my result in miles?

Yes. Choose miles or kilometres for the race you ran; the distance is converted to kilometres behind the scenes, and every row of the table is shown with metric race names and distances.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

Invalid or non-positive inputs fail with invalid_input so training apps and spreadsheets never invent a negative pace or a zero-distance miracle.

Input contract, formulas, units, and error behaviour

Optional exponent defaults to 1.06 and must be strictly positive when provided—values less than or equal to zero are rejected because they invert or collapse the endurance model. Example: a ten kilometre race in two thousand four hundred seconds with the default exponent yields a full ladder including 5K, half marathon, and marathon rows whose times are fully determined by the power law—no tables, no network lookup, no seasonal adjustment. POST a JSON body with two required positive finite numbers: distance, the length of the known race in the unit you declare, and time_seconds, the finish time in total seconds (for example forty minutes is two thousand four hundred). Optional unit accepts km or mi and defaults to kilometres; the known distance is converted to kilometres internally so every equivalent row reports a stable metric distance_km. The identity applied to each common distance D2 is T2 equals T1 times (D2 divided by D1) raised to e, where D1 is the known distance in kilometres and T1 is time_seconds. Each row includes key, name, distance_km, time_seconds rounded for stable automation, a clock string time_formatted, pace_s_per_km, and pace_per_km as M:SS or H:MM:SS. The top-level payload echoes distance, time_seconds, time_formatted, unit, distance_km, exponent, known pace fields, formula, method, equivalent_count, and the equivalents array ordered shortest to longest. Missing fields, non-finite numbers, non-positive distance or time, and invalid units fail with invalid_input and are not billed.

Where an equivalent-times API earns its keep

Coaching platforms that store one recent race result can call this endpoint whenever an athlete asks what that mark is worth on other standard distances, without shipping floating-point race math into every mobile client.

What distances are included in the equivalents table?

Mile, 5K, 10K, 15K, half marathon (21.0975 km), 30K, marathon (42.195 km), and 50K, always ordered shortest to longest with metric distance_km on each row.

What does the equivalent race times calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
