Skeletal muscle mass calculator

A 30-year-old man 175 cm tall with arm, thigh and calf girths of 32, 52 and 36 cm carries about 36 kg of skeletal muscle by the Lee equation. A tape measure is enough when no body scan is available. Free in your browser.

This skeletal muscle mass calculator estimates total-body skeletal muscle mass in kilograms from standing height in centimetres, mid-limb girths of the arm, thigh, and calf, sex, and age using the published Lee et al. anthropometric prediction equation. Skeletal muscle is the contractile tissue that drives force production, basal energy use of lean mass, and many clinical thresholds for sarcopenia risk; estimating it from tape measures is useful when dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry or magnetic resonance imaging is unavailable. The Lee model multiplies height in metres by a weighted sum of squared corrected arm, thigh, and calf girths, then adds a sex term, an age penalty, a race offset, and a constant intercept so the result is a finite mass in kilograms. A typical check is a thirty-year-old man at one hundred seventy-five centimetres with arm thirty-two, thigh fifty-two, and calf thirty-six centimetres, which yields roughly thirty-six kilograms of skeletal muscle under these coefficients. The engine is fully deterministic: no network calls, no sampling, and no date-dependent shortcuts.

What skeletal muscle mass means and what you get

Skeletal muscle mass is the estimated kilograms of skeletal muscle tissue in the whole body, not total lean body mass and not fat-free mass. Lean mass still includes organs, bone mineral, and residual non-muscle fat-free compartments, so a Lee skeletal-muscle figure is usually lower than a Boer lean-body-mass figure for the same person and answers a different question: how much contractile muscle is predicted from height and limb girths.

Clinicians and coaches use skeletal muscle estimates when screening for low muscle mass, when comparing training blocks that should grow muscle rather than water weight, and when teaching students how anthropometric models approximate imaging-derived reference standards. The Lee equation is a linear anthropometric model fitted against criterion methods in published validation work: it needs height, three limb circumferences, sex, and age, with an optional race term and optional skinfolds to convert raw girths into corrected circumferences by subtracting pi times skinfold thickness in centimetres.

Non-positive height, girths, or age always fail because the physical model requires positive size and age.

Where Lee skeletal muscle mass fits in fitness, education, and software

Athletes and coaches use skeletal muscle mass estimates when logging hypertrophy blocks that should grow contractile tissue, when comparing relative strength across teammates of different limb sizes, or when explaining why two people with similar scale weight can carry very different amounts of muscle. Students meet anthropometric muscle-mass formulas in exercise physiology, sports nutrition, and geriatrics coursework when textbooks introduce sarcopenia screening before more expensive imaging methods.

Product teams call the same contract from scripts to seed deterministic test vectors for health dashboards, to normalize user-entered girths before composition charts, or to satisfy programming-challenge statements that demand a Lee estimate rather than a black-box app. Research assistants may reproduce published example calculations when verifying that a spreadsheet still matches the original coefficients years after the paper was filed.

Treat the output as an educational and planning estimate: if clinical or research accuracy is required, prefer measured body composition with a qualified professional and validated protocols for tape placement and skinfold technique. Pair this tool with lean-body-mass or fat-mass helpers when you need related composition fields, and keep units honest so centimetres and millimetres are never mixed with inches by accident when applying the published Lee coefficients.

What does the skeletal muscle mass calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page.

Which formula is used?

The Lee et al. (2000) anthropometric equation: SM = Ht × (0.00744·CAG² + 0.00088·CTG² + 0.00441·CCG²) + 2.4·sex − 0.048·age + race + 7.8, with Ht in metres and corrected girths in centimetres.

Do I need skinfold measurements?

No. Skinfolds are optional. When provided in millimetres they correct each girth as circumference minus π times millimetres over ten; when omitted, the girths are used as already corrected.

Does this replace a DXA or MRI muscle measurement?

No. Lee is a simple anthropometric estimate from height and limb girths. Use measured composition methods when clinical or research accuracy is required.

Is skeletal muscle mass the same as lean body mass?

No. Lean body mass also includes organs, bone mineral and other non-fat tissue, so the Lee figure is usually lower than a lean-mass estimate such as Boer's. It answers a narrower question: how much contractile muscle you carry.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

What skeletal muscle mass means and what the response contains

This calculator returns height in centimetres and metres, the raw girths, the corrected arm thigh and calf girths actually used in the squares, resolved sex and age, the race key and numeric race term, skeletal_muscle_mass_kg, the method tag lee_2000, a human-readable formula string, whether any skinfold correction was applied, and the precision used for rounding. There is no population percentile table, no hand-grip strength score, and no clinical sarcopenia diagnosis in this contract: the engine either computes a finite non-negative skeletal muscle mass inside the supported anthropometric limits or rejects the request with invalid_input.

How height, girths, sex, age, and race are read and how results stay reproducible

Optional leading plus signs and scientific notation on numeric strings are allowed when they parse as finite decimals; embedded spaces, hex prefixes, and non-numeric tokens are rejected with a clear message so a bad cell does not become a wrong muscle mass. Height, each girth, and age must be strictly positive and within documented ceilings of three hundred centimetres, one hundred fifty centimetres per girth, and one hundred twenty years. Computation multiplies the published Lee coefficients on squared corrected girths, scales by height in metres, adds the sex age and race terms, and never uses Monte Carlo sampling or external tables. The preferred fields are height for centimetres, arm_girth, thigh_girth, and calf_girth for centimetre circumferences, sex for the male or female code, and age in years. Aliases include height_cm, h, and stature for height; arm, cag, midarm, and arm_circumference for the arm; thigh, ctg, and midthigh for the thigh; calf, ccg, and midcalf for the calf; gender or sex_at_birth for sex; and age_years or years for age. Optional race accepts white, hispanic, asian, african_american or black, and other, with short codes w, h, a, aa, and b after case folding so forms and spreadsheets can reuse the same contract. Optional arm_skinfold, thigh_skinfold, and calf_skinfold in millimetres correct each girth as circumference minus pi times millimetres over ten; when skinfolds are omitted, the supplied girths are treated as already corrected, which matches field protocols that only record tape measures. Zero, negative, or non-finite values fail with invalid_input and a message that names the offending field and the non-positive rule. An optional precision field, with aliases decimals and dp, chooses how many decimal places to expose, defaulting to four and capped at fifteen so JSON goldens stay stable. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical mathematical result inside an automated pipeline without re-implementing Lee coefficients yourself.

Where Lee skeletal muscle mass fits in fitness, education, and software

On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog and lets you move from a classroom demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result.

Deterministic test fixtures

Generate reproducible Lee SM fields for unit tests, health dashboards, and CI assertions on fixed anthropometrics.

What happens if height, a girth, or age is zero or negative?

The input is rejected with invalid_input. Height, arm/thigh/calf girths, and age must be strictly positive for a valid skeletal muscle mass estimate.
