Roof pitch calculator

Measure 6 of rise over 12 of run and you have a 6/12 pitch, a 50% slope and a rafter multiplier of about 1.118. Enter rise and run in any one unit and get the pitch label, angle, percent grade and multiplier together. Free in your browser.

A roof pitch calculator turns two simple measurements—vertical rise and horizontal run—into the numbers framers, estimators, and DIY renovators actually use: the pitch ratio (including the familiar X-over-12 label), the slope angle in degrees, and the rafter length multiplier. Material takeoffs, permit sketches, and homework on right-triangle roofs all need that same deterministic path without a CAD package.

What roof pitch, slope angle, and rafter multiplier mean

Roof pitch describes how steep a roof plane is. In North American framing language people usually quote pitch as rise over twelve units of run—for example a six-twelve pitch rises six inches for every twelve inches of horizontal run—while the abstract ratio rise to run is unit-free and works in millimetres or feet alike.

Mathematically the slope ratio is simply rise divided by run; slope percent is that ratio times one hundred; the slope angle in degrees is the arctangent of the same ratio, which is the angle the rafter makes with a level line. The rafter multiplier (sometimes called the rafter factor or length factor) is the hypotenuse of the rise-run right triangle divided by the run, equal to the square root of one plus the square of the slope ratio.

Multiply any pure horizontal run by that factor and you obtain the along-slope rafter length for that segment before adding overhangs, ridge cuts, or seat cuts. Zero rise with a positive run is a flat roof: angle zero degrees and multiplier exactly one. Zero run is invalid because neither angle nor multiplier is defined.

Builders use these three views for different jobs: the X-over-12 label matches span tables and shingle literature, degrees help solar and drainage discussions, and the multiplier feeds cut lists. This calculator publishes all of them from the same two inputs so a single measurement set drives estimates, worksheets, and automated checks without re-deriving trigonometry by hand.

Framing cut lists from measured rise and run

Carpenters enter field-measured rise and run, read the rafter multiplier and pitch label, then scale board lengths before adding eaves overhang.

Estimate worksheets and permit sketches

Estimators convert plan dimensions into X/12 pitch, slope degrees, and percent grade for material quotes and submission drawings.

How do you calculate roof pitch from rise and run?

Slope angle in degrees is atan(rise/run)×180/π. Rafter multiplier is hypot(rise, run)/run.

Is a zero rise allowed?

Yes. Rise zero with a positive run is a flat roof: angle 0°, rafter multiplier 1, pitch 0/12.

What is the rafter multiplier used for?

Multiply a pure horizontal run by the rafter multiplier to get the along-slope rafter length for that segment (before overhangs and seat cuts).

Is the roof pitch calculator free?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

What angle is a 6/12 roof pitch?

About 26.57 degrees. The angle is the arctangent of rise divided by run, here 6 divided by 12, or 0.5, which is also a 50% slope. Degrees are handy for solar and drainage discussions.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Enter rise and run in any consistent length unit; the tool returns slope ratio and percent, pitch_in_12, angle from arctangent of rise over run, hypotenuse of the right triangle, and the classic rafter multiplier so you can scale any run into board length. When run is zero the geometry is undefined, so the API returns a clear invalid_input error instead of dividing by zero.

How to call the API and what comes back

Rise must be greater than or equal to zero and at most one trillion; run must be strictly positive, at least one times ten to the minus fifteen, and at most one trillion, using the same length unit as rise. Send a JSON body with two required finite numbers: rise (aliases R, height, vertical, rise_in) and run (aliases H, horizontal, span, run_in). On success the response echoes rounded rise and run, sets pitch_ratio to a simplified integer ratio when both inputs are whole numbers otherwise a compact rise colon run string, pitch_label to the familiar X-slash-twelve form, pitch_in_12 to twelve times rise over run, slope_ratio and slope_percent to the unit slope and percent grade, angle_degrees and angle_radians to the arctangent results, rafter_multiplier and hypotenuse to the hypot-based length factor and absolute hypotenuse, formula to a short English formula line, message to a one-line summary, and steps to an ordered array of substitution lines you can show in UI or assert in tests. Failed validation—missing fields, non-finite numbers, negative rise, zero or negative run, or values outside absolute limits—returns invalid_input and is never charged. Pricing is a flat $0.002 per successful request with unit item and zero marginal unit price.

Practical tips, limits, and related searches

Measure rise and run with the same tape and unit; mixing inches of rise with feet of run silently doubles or multiplies the pitch and ruins the multiplier. Prefer sending numbers rather than pre-formatted strings when you control the client; string numbers are accepted only when they match a strict finite numeric pattern. Prefer this capability when you already have rise and run and need ratio, angle, and factor; if you only know degrees, invert with tangent to recover rise for a chosen run first. For a common gable, run is often half the building width minus wall thickness adjustments—confirm whether your span is full width or half-span before calling the API. Classic teaching pairs: six and twelve yield a six-twelve pitch near twenty-six point five seven degrees and multiplier about one point one one eight; four and twelve is a gentler four-twelve; twelve and twelve is a steep forty-five degree plane with multiplier root two; rise zero and run twelve demonstrates the flat-roof limit; run zero demonstrates the hard invalid_input path. This landing targets people searching for a roof pitch calculator, rise over run, slope angle in degrees, or rafter length multiplier; it is not a full lumber estimator, not a truss designer, and not a building-code checker for minimum pitch by climate or covering. Failed tasks that return invalid_input do not consume prepaid balance, which keeps exploratory scripts cheap when integrators deliberately send a zero run. Round-trip checks are easy: recompute atan of rise over run in degrees and hypot over run by hand and confirm they equal the published angle_degrees and rafter_multiplier within the same twelve-decimal rounding.

Homework and app unit tests for roof triangles

Teachers and developers generate known-good six-twelve and flat-roof cases plus deliberate zero-run rejections for deterministic expected values.

What happens when run is zero?

The geometry is undefined. This tool returns invalid_input instead of dividing by zero.
