Normalize whitespace
Squeeze messy text into one clean line: a 36-character greeting full of tabs, double spaces and line breaks becomes Hello, world! How are you? in 26 characters. Both ends are trimmed as well. Free in your browser.

Pasted logs, emails, OCR dumps, and spreadsheet exports often arrive as messy multi-line blobs full of tabs, extra spaces, and mixed newline styles that break equality checks, search tokens, and compact UI labels. This normalize whitespace tool takes non-empty text, trims the ends, and collapses every run of whitespace — including ordinary spaces, tabs, carriage returns, and line feeds — into a single ASCII space so the result is always one clean line. Empty or whitespace-only strings fail with invalid input so pipelines never store a blank after a cleanup step. Use it before indexing, before hashing a title, before comparing user answers, and before writing a one-line CMS field.
What normalize whitespace means and when to use it
Normalize whitespace means a single, well-known rewrite that programmers already write as a one-liner in many languages: trim the string, then replace every run of whitespace characters with exactly one ASCII space. Unlike a tool that only collapses repeated ordinary spaces and leaves interior tabs and newlines in place, this capability treats tabs, line feeds, carriage returns, form feeds, vertical tabs, and other Unicode whitespace matched by the standard JavaScript whitespace class as equivalent separators.
A paragraph copied from an email, a log line glued with tabs, and a cell that still contains a Windows CRLF therefore become one tidy line of tokens separated by single spaces. The letters, digits, and punctuation you typed stay exactly as they were; nothing is lowercased, slugified, or reordered. Prefer this landing when the search intent is normalize whitespace, collapse tabs and newlines to spaces, or squeeze messy text into a single line.
Do not use it when you need to delete every space so tokens glue together, when you only want extra ASCII spaces removed while keeping a multi-line layout, or when you want each line trimmed but the line structure preserved. Those are different products with different queries.
Where a one-line cleanup helps most
Call the free in-browser normalize whitespace tool for paste cleanup, classroom demos, content QA, and quick checks without installing a desktop utility or writing a split-and-join one-liner in every language. A typical workflow flattens user titles, comments, and search queries before store so two records that differ only by tabs or wrapped lines compare as equal. Another workflow cleans OCR lines and CSV cells before indexing so tokens split on a single space and n-gram features stay stable.
Do not expect HTML tag stripping, markdown reflow, locale-specific non-breaking-space policy beyond the standard whitespace class, or preservation of paragraph structure — those are separate problems. Authors shipping SDKs can document text as the only required field and show a mixed tab-and-newline success example plus an empty-string error example so integrators see both sides of the contract.
What you can do with it
Single-line titles and search queries
Flatten pasted titles, comments, and search boxes so tabs and wrapped lines cannot break equality, hashing, or compact UI labels.
OCR, CSV, and log cleanup
Squeeze OCR dumps, spreadsheet cells, and log fragments into one line before indexing or warehouse load so tokens split on a single space.
FAQ
How do I normalize whitespace with this tool?
The response result field is the trimmed single-line string with every run of spaces, tabs, and newlines collapsed to one space.
How is this different from remove extra spaces?
Remove extra spaces only collapses repeated ASCII spaces and keeps interior tabs and newlines. Normalize whitespace treats all whitespace — including tabs and newlines — as separators and always returns one line.
What happens to tabs and newlines inside the text?
Each run of tabs, newlines, carriage returns, or other whitespace becomes a single ASCII space. Leading and trailing whitespace is removed entirely.
Is the normalize whitespace tool free?
The browser tool runs free on your device.
Can I keep my paragraphs or line breaks?
No. Every line break becomes a single space, so the result is always one line. If you need to keep the layout and only remove extra spaces, this is not the right tool.

Technical notes
What normalize whitespace means and when to use it
Empty input and strings that contain only whitespace raise invalid_input so a forgotten form field cannot slip through as a successful blank.
Input contract, algorithm, and reading the response
The engine first trims leading and trailing whitespace, then replaces every remaining run of one or more whitespace characters with a single U+0020 space, which is why mixed tabs and newlines never leave double gaps and why the result never contains a line break. Send a JSON body with the required string field text set to the non-empty passage you want cleaned. Aliases input, value, s, and content are accepted when older clients or generated forms use those names. Missing text, a non-string value, an empty string, a whitespace-only string, or a payload longer than the documented character cap all raise invalid_input with a message that names the problem, and those failures are not charged on the prepaid API. Use result alone when you only need the cleaned line; use original and result together when a demo must show before and after; use chars_removed and changed when a pipeline logs how aggressive the tidy was. Keep payloads to ordinary phrases, paragraphs, and short documents suitable for a Worker isolate rather than multi-megabyte dumps.
API usage, pricing, workflows, and practical limits
Use the prepaid KIT API when a CMS, ETL job, form backend, support desk, or mobile client needs the same transform under balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with case converters, slug builders, or find-and-replace when the next step is style or routing, but keep normalize whitespace as its own landing so the search intent is not mixed with remove-extra-spaces or delete-all-whitespace tools.
Integration use cases
Deterministic fixtures and QA
Pin a known messy string to a single-line golden so a refactor that changes trim or collapse rules fails continuous integration immediately.
Technical questions
What if the text is empty or only whitespace?
Empty strings and whitespace-only strings fail with invalid_input and are not charged.
