Reverse text

Hello, world! comes back as !dlrow ,olleH: the last character becomes the first, and emoji, flags and accented letters stay intact instead of turning into broken symbols. Good for puzzles, classroom demos and quick checks. Free in your browser.

Reversing a string looks trivial until multi-byte Unicode appears: a naive loop over UTF-16 indexes can split emoji, combining marks, and surrogate pairs, producing corrupted output that fails visual checks and automated tests. Empty or whitespace-only strings fail with invalid input so pipelines never store blank results by accident.

What reversing text actually does

Reversing text means reading it from the end: the last character of your text becomes the first, the second to last becomes the second, and so on until the first character lands at the end. Hello becomes olleH, and Hello, world! becomes !dlrow ,olleH, with the comma, the space and the exclamation mark moving along with the letters. Nothing is added, removed or translated, so the result has exactly as many characters as the original. This is not the same as reversing the order of words, where each word stays readable; here every word ends up spelled backwards.

Why emoji and accents need special care

A simple program that flips text piece by piece can split an emoji in two, so it turns into a pair of empty boxes. The same happens to flags, to family emoji built from several figures joined by invisible links, and to accented letters stored as a base letter plus a separate accent. This tool first groups everything you see as one character, then reverses those groups, so each emoji, flag and accented letter comes out whole. Two things it does not do: it does not reorder words, and it does not rearrange right-to-left scripts for display. An empty entry, or one made only of spaces, is refused.

What reverse text means and why Unicode handling matters

Reverse text means the last character of the input becomes the first character of the output, the second-to-last becomes the second, and so on until the first character of the input ends at the end of the result. For plain ASCII such as Hello the output is olleH and every programming language agrees. Indexing a JavaScript string by code unit or splitting on empty string can cut a single emoji into orphan surrogates that display as replacement characters.

This capability therefore segments first, then reverses the segment list, then joins. When the runtime exposes Intl.Segmenter with grapheme granularity, each user-perceived character stays whole through the reverse. When Segmenter is unavailable, Array.from walks code points so surrogate pairs still reverse intact.

Prefer this reverse text calculator when the search intent is reverse a string, flip character order, or reverse text online with emoji support. Do not use it when you only need to reverse word order in a sentence while keeping each word readable left-to-right—that is a different product promise.

Puzzles and educational demos

Teachers and game makers reverse phrases and emoji-safe strings for classroom puzzles, CTF warm-ups, and interactive demos without corrupting multi-byte characters.

How do I reverse text with this tool?

The response result field is the reversed output; original echoes your input for comparison.

Does reverse text handle emoji and Unicode correctly?

Yes. The engine segments grapheme clusters when Intl.Segmenter is available, otherwise code points via Array.from, so multi-byte emoji are not split into broken surrogates.

Is the reverse text tool free?

The browser tool runs free on your device.

Does this reverse words or characters?

It reverses the full character stream (graphemes/code points), not word order alone. Hello world becomes dlrow olleH, not world Hello.

What is reversed text useful for?

Mostly for puzzles, games and classroom demos, such as warm-ups for a code-breaking challenge. It is also a quick way to check that a text with emoji survives processing intact.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

POSThttps://api.kit.forhosting.com/str/reverse

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

curl -X POST https://api.kit.forhosting.com/str/reverse \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KIT_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text":"Hello, world!"}'
{
  "text": "Hello, world!"
}

  "task_id": "tsk_a1b2c3d4e5f6a1b2c3d4e5f6",
  "type": "str.reverse",
  "status": "queued",
  "_links": {
    "result": "/tasks/tsk_…/result"
  }
}

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

Published price — no tokens, no invented credits. A failed task is never charged.

404unknown_typeThat task type doesn't exist.
429rate_limitedToo many requests. Use the webhook instead of polling.

What reverse text means and why Unicode handling matters

The hard case is real-world text: flags, family emoji joined with zero-width joiners, accented letters written as base plus combining mark, and symbols outside the Basic Multilingual Plane.

Input contract, empty rejection, and reading the response

Source text follows the same retention rules as other KIT parse items. Send a JSON body with the required string field text set to the non-empty phrase you want reversed. Aliases input, value, s, and content are accepted when older clients or form generators use those names. Missing text, a non-string value, an empty string, or a whitespace-only string all raise invalid_input with a message that names the problem, and those failures are not charged on the prepaid API. Use result alone when you only need the flipped string; use original and result together when a demo UI must show before-and-after; use char_count when you are verifying that multi-code-unit symbols counted as one unit. Keep payloads to ordinary phrase and message sizes suitable for a Worker isolate rather than multi-megabyte dumps; this product is a text utility, not a bulk file processor.

API usage, pricing, workflows, and practical limits

Call the free in-browser reverse text tool for puzzles, classroom demos, copy checks, and quick emoji-safe experiments without installing a desktop utility or writing a one-liner in every language. Do not expect linguistic word-order reversal for natural language display, bidirectional algorithm reordering for full RTL layout, or locale-specific collation—those are separate problems. Authors shipping SDKs can document text as the only required field and show a multi-character success example plus an empty-string error example so integrators see both sides of the contract. Use the prepaid KIT API when a game backend, content pipeline, QA harness, or mobile client needs the same transform under balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. A typical workflow takes a slogan or seed phrase, runs this endpoint, then displays the mirrored string for a fun UI or a verification step that the round-trip reverse of the reverse restores the original. Pair this endpoint with encode or hash tools when the next step is Base64 or checksum of the reversed form, but keep reverse as its own landing so the reverse text search intent is not mixed with encoding.

QA and Unicode regression fixtures

Test harnesses pin reversed golden outputs so refactors that split surrogate pairs or combining marks fail continuous integration immediately.

UI mirroring and content pipelines

Product tools generate mirrored labels or seed variants from user text with a stable prepaid contract for servers and SDKs.

What happens if text is empty?

Empty strings and whitespace-only strings fail with invalid_input and are not charged.
