Normal probability between values calculator

Between 85 and 115 on a normal curve with mean 100 and standard deviation 15 lies just over two thirds of the probability, because each bound sits 1 standard deviation from the mean. Both z-scores are shown. Free in your browser.

This normal probability between values calculator finds the probability that a normally distributed variable lies within a chosen interval. Enter a lower bound, an upper bound, the distribution mean, and its positive standard deviation. The result is a probability from zero to one, accompanied by the standardized z-score for each bound. It is useful for checking textbook exercises, evaluating specification ranges, and turning measurements into comparable probability statements without simulation or random sampling.

What probability between two normal values means

A normal distribution describes a continuous, symmetric bell-shaped pattern centered on its mean. This calculator measures the area under that curve from the lower bound to the upper bound. That area is the probability that one observation from the specified distribution falls inside the interval.

A result near zero means the interval captures very little of the distribution, while a result near one means it captures almost all of it. The calculation assumes that the mean and standard deviation are already known or have been chosen as model parameters. It does not inspect raw observations or decide whether a normal model is suitable.

The returned probability uses the conventional zero-to-one scale. Multiply it by one hundred if you want a percentage. The response also includes both z-scores, which show how many standard deviations each bound lies below or above the mean and make the interval easier to interpret or compare with another normal distribution.

How to enter bounds, mean, and deviation

Equal bounds are accepted and correctly return zero probability, since an interval with no width contains no area under a continuous density. Reversed bounds are rejected so that an accidental input order cannot produce a misleading negative area or an silently altered request. Enter the center of the distribution as mean; it may be negative, zero, or positive.

Enter its standard deviation as deviation, which must be strictly greater than zero. The deviation controls spread: a small value concentrates probability close to the mean, whereas a large value distributes it across a wider range. Numeric strings, missing values, NaN, and infinity are invalid.

Internally, each bound is standardized with z = (x − mean) / deviation. The calculator then evaluates the standard normal cumulative distribution at both z-scores and subtracts the lower cumulative probability from the upper one.

When this normal interval calculation is useful

Use this calculation when a quantity is reasonably modeled by a normal distribution and you need the expected share inside a range. A quality engineer can enter lower and upper specification limits with a stable process mean and deviation to estimate the theoretical in-spec fraction. A teacher or student can verify the area between two raw scores without manually consulting a z-table.

An analyst can compare differently scaled metrics by reading their standardized bounds and resulting probability. Model choice still matters. Real data can be skewed, multimodal, bounded, rounded, or heavy-tailed, and in those situations the normal curve may understate or overstate the true interval frequency.

Parameter uncertainty also is not represented: if the supplied mean and deviation were estimated from a small sample, the output remains a plug-in model probability rather than a confidence interval. This capability performs the stated distribution calculation only. It does not fit parameters, test normality, correct measurement bias, calculate a percentile value, or promise that future observations will match the theoretical percentage.

Estimate an in-spec process share

Find the theoretical fraction of normally distributed output between lower and upper specification limits.

Check a probability exercise

Verify the area between two raw values when a problem supplies the distribution mean and standard deviation.

Build deterministic statistical tests

Generate stable expected interval probabilities and z-scores for analytics software test cases.

What formula does the calculator use?

It computes z scores for both bounds, evaluates the standard normal cumulative distribution at each, and subtracts the lower CDF value from the upper CDF value.

Why must deviation be positive?

A normal distribution needs a strictly positive standard deviation.

What happens when both bounds are equal?

The probability is zero because a single exact point has zero area in a continuous normal distribution.

Does the calculator estimate the mean or deviation from data?

No. You supply both parameters. This capability evaluates a specified distribution and does not fit one from observations.

Is the output a percentage?

The probability is returned from zero to one. Multiply it by one hundred to express the same result as a percentage.

What probability between two normal values means

Because the distribution is continuous, including or excluding the exact endpoints does not change the probability: a single precise point has zero probability mass.

How to enter bounds, mean, and deviation

Provide the smaller endpoint as lower_bound and the larger endpoint as upper_bound. Every field must be a finite JSON number. This direct analytic method is deterministic, requires no random draws, and returns the same result for the same four inputs on every request.

What does an API request cost?

Each successful API request costs $0.002. Invalid input is rejected before a useful result is returned.
