Liquid net worth is the slice of personal or household wealth you could turn into cash on a short horizon: cash and cash equivalents, marketable securities, and other liquid assets, minus the current liabilities that would be paid from that pool. Unlike total net worth, it does not count a house, a car, a pension with withdrawal penalties, or a private-business interest you cannot sell this month. This liquid net worth calculator accepts those four finite amounts in one currency, adds the three liquid-asset lines, subtracts current liabilities, and returns the liquid net worth together with the liquid-asset subtotal.

What liquid net worth means and how the four money stocks combine

Liquid net worth, in the working definition this calculator uses, is the signed remainder after you add every asset you could convert to cash on a short horizon and then subtract every claim that is due within twelve months of the statement date. The three asset stocks are cash, marketable securities, and other liquid assets, always measured in one currency at one reporting date. Cash is checking, savings, money-market balances, physical currency, and similar amounts you can spend without a sale.

Marketable securities are publicly traded stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds, mutual-fund shares, and other positions a public market will take on a short horizon at a quoted price. Other liquid assets catch near-cash claims that are neither bank cash nor a listed security in your chart of accounts: a short-term Treasury you booked as other, a brokerage cash sweep you keep off the cash line, a precious-metal exchange-traded fund you treat as liquid, or a similar claim you can monetize without a lengthy sale.

Current liabilities are the offsetting claims: credit-card balances, the current portion of term loans, tax installments due, medical bills in collection windows, and other obligations payable from that liquid pool within a year. Zero on any line is a legitimate empty bucket and simply adds or subtracts nothing. A negative cash line is an overdraft that reduces the pool.

A negative liquid net worth is a real outcome: current liabilities larger than the liquid pool. Amounts must be finite numbers. The engine does not convert currencies, haircut securities, apply bid-ask spreads, model a 401(k) penalty, or discount future coupons.

Callers who already hold a classified trial balance can map four cells into this contract and receive a reproducible headline figure they can pin beside a filing, a household plan, or a classroom answer key without pulling a general ledger of their own.

Emergency-fund check before a large purchase

Add cash, brokerage positions, and other near-cash claims, subtract current bills, and see whether the remaining liquid net worth still covers a planned expense.

Classroom personal-finance checks

Give students four classified money lines and verify the liquid-net-worth key without mixing a house or a locked retirement account into the sum.

How is liquid net worth calculated?

Each component is rounded half-up to two decimal places. Zero is allowed. A non-finite asset or liability value is rejected.

What happens if an asset value is not a finite number?

Missing keys, empty strings, NaN, and Infinity are not finite numbers, and failed validation is not billed.

Does this calculator include a house, a car, or a retirement account?

No. Liquid net worth counts only cash, marketable securities, and other liquid assets, minus current liabilities. Illiquid property and locked retirement balances belong on a total-net-worth worksheet, not here.

Can liquid net worth be negative?

Yes. If the debts due within a year are larger than your cash, securities and other liquid assets combined, the result is negative. An overdraft can be entered as negative cash and reduces the pool.

Which debts count as current liabilities?

Obligations you would pay from your liquid money within twelve months: credit-card balances, the part of loans due this year, tax installments, medical bills and similar claims. Long-term debt beyond that window stays out.

What liquid net worth means and how the four money stocks combine

The identity is closed and arithmetic: liquid_assets equals cash plus marketable_securities plus other_liquid_assets, and liquid_net_worth equals that subtotal minus current_liabilities. That result is a stock, not a cash-flow, not a credit score, not a total-net-worth figure that still includes a house, and not a fire-sale appraisal.

Input contract, rejected non-finite values, and the shape of a successful response

Zero is allowed on any line and contributes nothing to the sum or the subtraction. Optional output keys are omitted rather than set to null. POST a JSON body with four required finite numbers in one currency. cash is the spendable cash-and-equivalents stock; aliases cash_and_equivalents, cash_equivalents, and cash_on_hand are accepted so spreadsheets and typed forms can reuse the same contract. marketable_securities is the listed-position stock; aliases securities, marketable, and stocks_bonds map to the same field. other_liquid_assets is the residual near-cash bucket; aliases other_liquid, other_assets, and liquid_other are honored. current_liabilities is the current-claim stock; aliases liabilities, current_liability, and short_term_liabilities are accepted. Numeric strings that parse as finite decimals are accepted; empty strings, missing keys, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input naming the field, because an asset value that is not a finite number cannot enter the identity. Those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes the four cleaned amounts rounded half-up to two decimal places, reports liquid_assets as the rounded sum of the three asset lines, reports liquid_net_worth as that subtotal minus current liabilities, and includes a formula string restating the identity. Pair the JSON with your own notes if you need a haircut schedule, a bid-ask table, or a total-net-worth worksheet that still includes real estate; this endpoint only adds the three liquid stocks and subtracts current liabilities.

Where a liquid net worth calculator earns its keep

Households use a liquid net worth calculator when they need a figure they could actually write a check against this quarter — cash, brokerage positions, and other near-cash claims minus credit-card and other current bills — before they decide whether an emergency fund is thick enough or a large purchase would empty the pool. Advisors and planners use the same identity when a client mixes a house, a car, and a retirement lock-up into a vanity net-worth number that cannot pay a medical bill next month; stripping the illiquid stock leaves a number the plan can actually spend. Credit analysts and underwriters drop the four lines into a working-paper or covenant worksheet so a borrower who looks wealthy on total assets is not treated as liquid when the wealth is a home and the current claims are due. Students meet the identity in introductory personal-finance units that ask for liquid net worth given classified lines, and teachers can generate answer keys without trusting opaque apps that mix a 401(k) or a residence into a three-asset sum. On this page the work runs entirely in the browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. Pair the free interactive run with the priced, identical API when you move from a worksheet demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result or re-implementing the four-line identity yourself.

Deterministic planning-dashboard fixtures

Seed CI and product calculators with a stable liquid_net_worth from known cash, securities, other liquid assets, and current liabilities.

Which fields do I send?

Send cash (or cash_and_equivalents, cash_equivalents, cash_on_hand), marketable_securities (or securities, marketable, stocks_bonds), other_liquid_assets (or other_liquid, other_assets, liquid_other), and current_liabilities (or liabilities, current_liability, short_term_liabilities). All four must be finite numbers.

What does the liquid net worth calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
