Total debt calculator

Stack the three liability lines into one headline obligation: 12000 of short-term debt, 85000 of long-term debt and 4500 of other fixed liabilities make a total debt of 101500. Each line is shown beside the total. Free in your browser.

This total debt calculator adds short-term debt, long-term debt, and other fixed liabilities into one headline obligation. Lenders, analysts, students, and underwriting scripts need that stacked figure without mixing amortization, coupons, or currency conversion into a three-line identity. Send three finite non-negative amounts in a single currency; the engine echoes each cleaned component and returns total debt as their sum. Zero is allowed and contributes nothing. There is no DSCR, snowball schedule, or present-value discount—only deterministic addition you can pin in tests and show next to the three source lines.

What total debt means and how the three liability stocks add

Total debt, in the working definition this calculator uses, is the sum of three non-negative liability stocks measured in one currency at one reporting date: short-term debt, long-term debt, and other fixed liabilities. Short-term debt is the current portion—notes payable, revolving draws, the current slice of a term loan, commercial paper, and similar obligations due within twelve months of the statement date. Long-term debt is the non-current contractual remainder: bonds, mortgages, term loans, and other borrowings due after one year.

Other fixed liabilities catch contractual obligations that are neither short-term borrowing nor long-term borrowing in the strict notes-and-bonds sense but still sit as fixed claims: finance leases already classified as liabilities, certain deferred consideration, booked pension deficits, or other contractual payables the caller has labeled as fixed. A negative component is outside the model because a liability stock cannot be less than zero here; zero is a legitimate empty bucket and simply adds nothing. Amounts must be finite numbers.

The engine does not convert currencies, apply hedges, net unrestricted cash, subtract unused facilities, or discount future coupons. Callers who already hold a classified trial balance can map three cells into this contract and receive a reproducible headline figure they can pin beside a filing, a credit memo, or a classroom answer key without pulling a general ledger of their own.

Where a total-debt calculator earns its keep

Credit analysts use a total debt calculator when a filing splits current notes, long-term bonds, and lease-like fixed claims and they need one stacked obligation before leverage ratios are built downstream. Students meet the same identity in introductory accounting units that ask for total debt given three classified lines, and teachers can generate answer keys without trusting opaque apps that mix interest or present value into a simple sum.

Founders mapping a cap table and a debt schedule into a one-page snapshot can keep the three buckets explicit instead of collapsing them too early. Households consolidating a car note, a mortgage remainder, and a lease buyout into a single family-obligation figure get the same addition without a spreadsheet formula that silently treats a sign error as a credit.

Classroom classified-liability checks

Give students three non-negative liability lines and verify the total-debt key without mixing interest or present value into the sum.

How is total debt calculated?

Each component is rounded to two decimal places, then added. Zero is allowed; a negative component is rejected.

What happens if a debt component is negative?

Debt components cannot be negative in this calculator, and failed validation is not billed.

Does this calculator compute DSCR or a snowball payoff plan?

No. It only adds three liability stocks. Debt-service coverage and snowball-versus-avalanche schedules are separate search intents and separate tools.

What belongs in other fixed liabilities?

Contractual claims that are neither short-term nor long-term borrowing in the strict sense, such as finance leases already booked as liabilities, deferred consideration or a booked pension deficit.

Does total debt subtract cash or unused credit lines?

No. The calculator only adds the three lines. It does not net off cash, subtract unused facilities, convert currencies or discount future coupons, so enter all three amounts in one currency at one date.

A negative component is rejected with invalid_input because a liability line cannot sit below zero in this model.

What total debt means and how the three liability stocks add

The identity is closed and arithmetic: total_debt equals short_term_debt plus long_term_debt plus other_fixed_liabilities. That result is a stock, not a cash-flow, not a debt-service coverage ratio, not a snowball versus avalanche payoff order, and not an interest expense.

Input contract, rejected negatives, and the shape of a successful response

Zero is allowed on any line and contributes nothing to the total. Optional output keys are omitted rather than set to null. POST a JSON body with three required finite numbers in one currency. short_term_debt is the current borrowing stock; aliases short_term, current_debt, and current_liabilities are accepted so spreadsheets and typed forms can reuse the same contract. long_term_debt is the non-current contractual remainder; aliases long_term, noncurrent_debt, and ltd map to the same field. other_fixed_liabilities is the residual fixed-claim bucket; aliases other_liabilities, other_fixed, and ofl are honored. Numeric strings that parse as finite decimals are accepted; empty strings, missing keys, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input naming the field. If any component is negative the request is rejected with a message that debt components cannot be negative—that is the hard contract of this calculator, and those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes the three cleaned amounts rounded to two decimal places, reports total_debt as their rounded sum, and includes a formula string restating the identity. Pair the JSON with your own notes if you need a maturity schedule, coupon table, or covenant test; this endpoint only adds the three stocks.

Where a total-debt calculator earns its keep

On this page the work runs entirely in the browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. Pair the free interactive run with the priced, identical API when you move from a worksheet demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result or re-implementing the three-line sum yourself.

Deterministic lending-dashboard fixtures

Seed CI and product calculators with a stable total_debt from known short-term, long-term, and other fixed amounts.

Which fields do I send?

Send short_term_debt (or short_term, current_debt, current_liabilities), long_term_debt (or long_term, noncurrent_debt, ltd), and other_fixed_liabilities (or other_liabilities, other_fixed, ofl). All three must be finite and non-negative.

What does the total debt calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
