Idling fuel consumption calculator

An engine burning 0.8 litres an hour uses 0.4 litres in half an hour of idling. Enter the idle rate and how long the car sat in a drive-through, a warm-up or a school pickup queue to see the fuel burned while standing still. Free in your browser.

This idling fuel consumption calculator turns an engine idle burn rate and a parked duration into the volume of fuel used while the vehicle is not moving, and optionally into the cash that volume costs at the pump. The path is fully deterministic: no traffic model, no map feed, and no date-dependent shortcut. Zero rate or zero duration is a legitimate parked log that yields zero fuel.

What idling fuel consumption means and what comes back

Idling fuel consumption answers a practical household and fleet question: given how much fuel an engine burns each hour while it is running but not going anywhere, and how long it stayed in that state, how much fuel left the tank. Handbook stickers and trip computers usually report moving economy in liters per one hundred kilometers or miles per gallon, which is the wrong identity for a drive-through line, a winter warm-up, a loading dock, or a school pickup queue. This page stays on the idle identity.

Zero is allowed on both rate and duration because a parked hour with a documented zero idle burn, or a zero-length idle, is a real logbook entry. If you need moving trip economy from liters and kilometers, use a trip consumption helper; if you need liters for a future journey from a rated economy, use a trip volume helper. This landing is the parked-engine product so logbooks, APIs, and the free browser demo share one stable contract.

Where an idle-fuel check belongs in daily life and software

Private drivers meet this calculation when a winter warm-up, a ferry queue, or a long school pickup is long enough to wonder what the parked engine actually cost. Households use it to compare leaving the car running against shutting it off for a ten-minute wait, using the same idle rate from the handbook or a dealer note. Fleet and depot desks use it when telematics already report idle hours and a standard liters-per-hour figure, and the desk needs a volume or a cash line without opening a vehicle-dynamics model.

Students and driving instructors use it to connect the textbook idea of a rate times a time with a concrete number from a drive-through wait, including the classic zero point eight liters per hour and half an hour example that yields zero point four liters. Keep requests inside the published magnitude ceiling, pin the six-decimal volume in tests, and you get a reproducible idle-fuel figure for logbooks, classroom plugins, and edge workers without standing up an engine-map of your own.

Warm-up and queue fuel log

Enter the handbook idle rate and the minutes the engine sat in a drive-through or school pickup to record the parked fuel used.

What happens if the idle rate or duration is negative?

A negative burn rate or a negative parked interval is not a physical idle, so the calculator will not invent a reverse volume.

Is fuel price required?

Cost is then omitted from the response, not returned as null. A negative pump price is rejected.

What does the idling fuel consumption calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page.

Can I enter the idling time in minutes?

Yes. Choose hours or minutes; minutes are converted to hours before they are multiplied by the idle rate, so a ten-minute wait is simply entered as 10 minutes rather than as a fraction of an hour.

Can the calculator show what idling cost me?

Yes. Add the price of one unit of fuel, such as a litre, and the fuel used is multiplied by that price. The cost comes out in the same currency you used for the price.

Why can't I use my car's litres per 100 km or mpg figure?

Those figures describe fuel use while driving, not while parked, so they are the wrong measure for a queue or a warm-up. Idling needs a burn rate per hour. For trip economy from litres and kilometres, use a trip consumption calculator.

Enter idle_rate as fuel units per hour and duration in hours or minutes; the engine converts minutes to hours when needed, multiplies the rate by that duration, and returns fuel_used. When you also send fuel_price, it multiplies that volume by the unit price and returns cost in the same currency. A negative rate or a negative duration is rejected with invalid_input because a physical idle burn cannot go backwards.

What idling fuel consumption means and what comes back

You supply idle_rate in fuel units per hour and duration in hours or minutes; the response echoes those inputs, reports duration_hours after any minute conversion, reports fuel_used, and, when fuel_price is present, reports cost. There is no traffic simulation and no live map feed: the engine either builds a finite non-negative volume inside the supported numeric range or rejects the input with invalid_input. Rejected cases include a missing idle_rate or duration field, a non-finite token, a magnitude above the documented ceiling, a negative rate, a negative duration, a negative pump price, and a duration_unit that is not hours or minutes.

How the two required inputs are read and how fuel used is computed

Optional leading plus signs and scientific notation on numeric strings are allowed when they parse as finite decimals; embedded spaces, hex prefixes, and non-numeric tokens are rejected with a message that names the field, so a bad cell does not become a wrong idle volume. After validation the engine applies the school identity: fuel used equals idle rate times duration in hours. That is why zero point eight liters per hour over half an hour is zero point four liters, and why one point two liters per hour over thirty minutes is zero point six liters after six-decimal rounding. A negative rate or negative duration is the specified error path: inventing a reverse burn would hide a data-entry mistake. The preferred fields are idle_rate for the engine burn in fuel units per hour and duration for the parked interval, but aliases such as rate, consumption_rate, idle_consumption, liters_per_hour, lph, hours, idle_hours, time, idle_time, and idle_duration are accepted so spreadsheets and typed forms can reuse the same contract without renaming columns. duration_unit selects hours or minutes and defaults to hours; minutes are divided by sixty before the multiply so a thirty-minute wait at one point two liters per hour is the same half-hour product as sending duration zero point five with the default unit. When fuel_price is omitted, cost is omitted from the payload so an optional field never appears as null. When fuel_price is present and non-negative, cost equals fuel used times that unit price, so zero point six liters at one point five per liter is zero point nine in the same currency. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical mathematical result inside an automated pipeline.

Where an idle-fuel check belongs in daily life and software

Expense products call the contract from scripts when a user logs idle minutes and a pump price and the app must show fuel_used and cost without shipping a traffic simulator. On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the tier-A catalog and lets you move from a dashboard demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result.

Idle cash cost at the pump

Send fuel_price with the same rate and duration to turn a parked interval into a currency cost for an expense sheet.

Homework and fleet fixtures

Confirm fuel_used = idle_rate × duration_hours, including the required invalid_input when the rate or duration is negative.

How is idling fuel consumption calculated?

Send idle_rate in fuel units per hour and duration in hours or minutes. Fuel used is idle_rate times duration converted to hours. When fuel_price is sent, cost is that volume times the unit price.

Can I enter duration in minutes?

Yes. Set duration_unit to minutes and send the parked interval in minutes. The engine divides by sixty before multiplying by idle_rate. The default unit is hours.
