Flight fuel planning is more than multiplying burn rate by estimated time en route. Dispatchers, flight instructors, and private pilots must also carry fuel to an alternate aerodrome and a legal or company final reserve, and many operators add a contingency percentage on top of trip fuel. This flight fuel reserve calculator accepts hourly burn rate, trip flight time, and required reserve minutes, then optionally an alternate time and a contingency percent, and returns the trip, alternate, reserve, and contingency fuel quantities plus the total fuel that must be on board. Times can be entered in hours or minutes; reserve is always specified in minutes, matching the language of IFR final-reserve rules such as thirty minutes for turbine aeroplanes and forty-five minutes for piston aeroplanes.

What trip, alternate, reserve, and contingency fuel mean

The usable fuel you load for a flight is a stack of legally and operationally distinct quantities, not a single guess. Alternate fuel is the extra quantity to fly from the destination to a nominated alternate aerodrome if the destination weather, runway, or approach becomes unusable: the same burn rate multiplied by alternate time. Adding those four terms yields total fuel, and dividing total fuel by burn rate yields endurance in hours and minutes.

The capability does not invent regulatory minima for your certificate or aircraft: you bring the reserve minutes and any contingency policy your operations manual requires, and it applies the arithmetic exactly. Taxi fuel, extra fuel for known holding, and tankering are outside this contract so the result stays a transparent four-term sum you can audit on a briefing sheet.

GA preflight fuel with a 45-minute reserve

Turn Cessna-class gallons per hour, estimated time en route, and a piston final reserve into trip, alternate, and total fuel before you leave the ramp.

Dispatch sector fuel with alternate and contingency

Convert hourly burn, trip time, alternate time, and a five-percent contingency into a four-term load figure for a charter or airline sector.

ATPL and instructor fuel-policy checks

Let students verify that reserve is minutes, trip may be hours or minutes, and total equals trip plus alternate plus reserve plus contingency.

How is reserve different from alternate and contingency?

Alternate is burn times the time to a nominated alternate. Contingency is a percent of trip fuel. All three add on top of trip fuel.

How many reserve minutes should I enter?

Whatever your rules or operations manual require; the tool does not set minima for you. Common final-reserve rules under instrument flight are 30 minutes for turbine aeroplanes and 45 minutes for piston aeroplanes.

Which fuel unit should I use?

Any unit, as long as it is consistent: gallons, litres, kilograms or pounds per hour. Every fuel figure in the result comes out in the same unit as the burn rate you enter.

Does the total include taxi or holding fuel?

No. Taxi fuel, extra fuel for known holding and tankering are left out, so the total is a clear sum of trip, alternate, reserve and contingency. Add those other amounts separately on your briefing sheet.

What does the endurance figure mean?

It is how long the total fuel lasts at your burn rate: the total divided by the hourly burn. With 46.5 gallons at 12 gallons an hour, that is 3.875 hours, or 232.5 minutes.

What trip, alternate, reserve, and contingency fuel mean

Trip fuel is the fuel required to fly from departure to destination at the planned burn rate: burn_rate multiplied by flight time converted to hours. Final reserve fuel is a time-based holding quantity that must still be in the tanks on arrival at the destination or the alternate; regulations typically quote it in minutes, so this calculator takes reserve_minutes and converts it to hours before multiplying by burn rate. Contingency fuel, when you supply contingency_percent, is a fraction of trip fuel that covers wind errors, routing changes, and level changes; five percent is a common planning figure, and zero percent is accepted when you want a raw trip-plus-alternate-plus-reserve total.

Input contract, units, and response fields

Values are rounded to twelve decimal places for stable goldens. POST a JSON body with three required finite numbers: burn_rate, the hourly fuel consumption in any consistent unit such as gallons per hour, litres per hour, or kilograms per hour; flight_time, the planned trip duration; and reserve_minutes, the required final reserve expressed in minutes. Optional flight_time_unit is hours by default or minutes when the trip is entered that way. Optional alternate_time is the time from destination to the alternate, defaulting to zero when you are planning a flight without an alternate; alternate_time_unit is hours by default or minutes. Optional contingency_percent is a number from zero to one hundred inclusive, defaulting to zero. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string; missing fields, empty strings, non-finite values, negative times, a non-positive burn_rate, and a contingency outside zero to one hundred fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. On success the body echoes the cleaned inputs and the normalised times in hours, then reports trip_fuel, alternate_fuel, reserve_fuel, contingency_fuel, and total_fuel in the same physical unit as burn_rate. endurance_hours and endurance_minutes restate how long that total will last at the given burn. result duplicates total_fuel for clients that always read a single numeric field. A formula string restates the four-term identity, method is trip_plus_alternate_plus_reserve_plus_contingency, and message summarises the stack in plain language. Example: burn_rate twelve, flight_time two point five hours, reserve_minutes forty-five, alternate_time zero point five hours, and contingency_percent five yields trip fuel thirty, alternate six, reserve nine, contingency one point five, and total forty-six point five.

Where a flight fuel reserve API earns its keep

General-aviation pilots and instructors use a flight fuel reserve calculator before VFR and IFR cross-countries so the legal reserve and a realistic alternate are not forgotten when someone multiplies gallons per hour by estimated time en route on a napkin. Charter and airline dispatch desks need the same four-term stack for a single sector without opening a full flight-planning suite: they already hold burn, trip time, alternate time, and company reserve minutes. Training organisations and ATPL exam generators need a deterministic oracle that treats reserve as minutes, accepts trip time in hours or minutes, and never silently drops contingency. Engineering notebooks that already store fuel flow and estimated times can call a tiny parse API instead of re-deriving the same arithmetic in every language binding. Keep requests small, pin total_fuel and the four-term breakdown in tests, and you get reproducible planning fuel for briefings, LMS plugins, and edge workers without standing up a performance-engineering library of your own. This endpoint does not compute weight and balance, takeoff performance, or great-circle time; it only converts the fuel policy you already chose into a total you can load.

How do I calculate total flight fuel including reserve?

Send burn_rate (hourly, greater than zero), flight_time, and reserve_minutes. Optionally add alternate_time and contingency_percent. The API returns trip, alternate, reserve, and contingency fuel plus total_fuel = trip + alternate + reserve + contingency.

What units does burn_rate use?

Any consistent hourly unit: gallons per hour, litres per hour, kilograms per hour, or pounds per hour. Trip, alternate, reserve, contingency, and total fuel are returned in that same unit.

Can I enter flight time in minutes instead of hours?

Yes. Set flight_time_unit to minutes (or alternate_time_unit for the alternate). Reserve is always reserved in minutes via reserve_minutes, matching regulatory wording.

What does the flight fuel reserve calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
