DuPont analysis calculator

Net income of 100,000 on sales of 1,000,000, with 500,000 of assets and 250,000 of equity, gives a 10% margin, an asset turnover of 2 and leverage of 2, for an ROE of 40%. See which driver really moves the return. Free in your browser.

DuPont analysis decomposes return on equity into three multiplicative drivers: profit margin, asset turnover, and financial leverage. Given net income, sales, assets, and equity from the same reporting period, the identities are net income over sales, sales over assets, and assets over equity; their product equals net income over equity, which is ROE. Analysts, credit officers, operators, and students use this breakdown whenever a headline ROE hides whether the firm earned more on each sale, sold more from each asset dollar, or simply borrowed against a thinner equity base. This DuPont analysis calculator accepts those four figures, rejects a zero sales, asset, or equity base instead of dividing by zero, and returns the three components together with ROE.

What DuPont analysis means and how the three-step identity works

DuPont analysis, named for the three-step identity popularized by the DuPont Corporation in the early twentieth century, decomposes return on equity into operating profitability, asset efficiency, and capital structure. Multiplying the three ratios cancels sales and assets and leaves net income over equity, which is ROE. A firm can therefore lift ROE by earning a fatter margin, by turning assets faster, or by carrying more assets on a thinner equity base; two firms with the same ROE can have opposite mixes of those three drivers.

Net income is the period bottom line and may be negative when the period posts a loss, in which case profit margin and ROE are negative while turnover and leverage stay defined as long as the denominators are non-zero. Sales, assets, and equity must not be zero because each appears as a denominator in at least one of the four identities.

Prefer the same currency and the same reporting window for all four inputs; mixing a year of income-statement flow with a mid-year balance-sheet stock is not a DuPont identity, it is a mixed snapshot.

Where a DuPont analysis calculator earns its keep

Equity analysts and credit officers use a DuPont analysis calculator when peer screens need to split a headline ROE into margin, turnover, and leverage so a retailer with thin margins and high turnover is not scored as if it were a bank with fat margins and heavy equity multipliers. Operators and FP and A teams track the three legs by year and by segment so capital allocation favors the driver that actually moved ROE, not just the product.

Lenders embed minimum ROE or related profitability tests in covenants and need a deterministic check that matches the spreadsheet the borrower already signed, including the case of a zero sales, asset, or equity line that must fail rather than print Infinity.

Educators and LMS platforms need an oracle for financial-statement homework that asks students to compute the three-step DuPont identity from net income, sales, assets, and equity—including the edge case of a loss students often mishandle by taking absolute value, and the edge case of zero equity they sometimes swap into the numerator. Failed validation is not billed.

Keep sales, assets, and equity non-zero, pin the rounded fields in tests, and you get reproducible DuPont figures for spreadsheets, workflow tools, and edge workers without standing up a financial-ratio library of your own. Use this capability when you already have all four statement figures; if you have only net income and assets and want ROA, that is a different identity and does not belong in this three-step DuPont definition.

Peer and 10-K ROE decomposition

Convert period net income, sales, assets, and equity into the three DuPont legs so companies rank by how they earned ROE—margin, turnover, or leverage—not by the headline product alone.

Covenant and credit packs

Reproduce the borrower's return-on-equity check with the same three-step identity the loan model uses, including rejection when sales, assets, or equity is zero.

Classroom statement-analysis drills

Mark homework that asks for DuPont analysis from net income, sales, assets, and equity with a deterministic three-component oracle.

Why must sales, assets, and equity not be zero?

Each is a denominator in the three-step identity.

Can net income or equity be negative?

Yes. A period loss yields a negative profit margin and ROE. Negative book equity yields a negative equity multiplier and ROE sign that matches the residual claim. Zero equity is rejected.

How does DuPont analysis break down ROE?

It multiplies three ratios: net income over sales, sales over assets, and assets over equity. Sales and assets cancel out, leaving net income over equity, which is the return on equity.

What does each of the three ratios tell me?

Profit margin shows how much profit remains from each unit of sales. Asset turnover shows how many times the assets were converted into sales. Leverage, or the equity multiplier, shows how large the assets are compared with the owners' equity.

Can I use average assets instead of year-end assets?

Yes. Work out the average yourself, beginning plus ending assets divided by two, and enter that figure as the assets. Keep all four figures in the same currency and reporting period.

What DuPont analysis means and how the three-step identity works

Profit margin is net income divided by sales: how many cents of bottom-line profit remain from each dollar of revenue after costs, interest, and tax. Asset turnover is sales divided by assets: how many times the recognized asset base is converted into sales during the period. Financial leverage, also called the equity multiplier, is assets divided by equity: how large the asset base is relative to the owners residual claim. This endpoint does not fetch filings or ledger data; it only applies the three-step identity once you supply the four numbers.

Input contract, rounding, validation, and worked examples

If you prefer average assets, compute that average yourself—beginning plus ending over two—and pass it as assets. POST a JSON body with four required finite numbers: net_income, sales, assets, and equity, in the same currency and covering the same reporting period. net_income (aliases net_profit, profit, earnings, and ni) may be zero or negative when the firm breaks even or loses money; the resulting profit margin and ROE are then zero or negative and still useful as a warning. sales (aliases revenue, net_sales, turnover, and total_sales) must not be zero because profit margin divides by sales and asset turnover multiplies by sales. assets (aliases total_assets, average_assets, and average_total_assets) must not be zero because asset turnover divides by the asset base and financial leverage multiplies by it. equity (aliases shareholders_equity, stockholders_equity, book_equity, and total_equity) must not be zero because both the equity multiplier and ROE divide by equity; a negative book-equity stock is accepted and yields a negative leverage and ROE sign that matches the residual claim. An optional decimals integer from zero through twelve (default six) controls half-up rounding applied once to profit_margin, profit_margin_percent, asset_turnover, financial_leverage, roe, and roe_percent from the raw IEEE quotients; never re-inject a rounded component into another formula step if you chain tools yourself. Missing fields, empty strings, non-finite values, and a zero sales, asset, or equity base fail with invalid_input naming the issue, and those failures are not billed. Example: net income one hundred thousand, sales one million, assets five hundred thousand, and equity two hundred fifty thousand yields profit_margin zero point one, asset_turnover two, financial_leverage two, and roe zero point four (forty percent). Pair the response with your own industry notes; this endpoint measures the identity only and does not annualize, currency-convert, or strip one-time items unless you fold those adjustments into the four inputs first.

How is DuPont analysis calculated?

profit_margin = net_income ÷ sales, asset_turnover = sales ÷ assets, financial_leverage = assets ÷ equity. ROE is their product, which equals net_income ÷ equity. The API returns those components plus profit_margin_percent and roe_percent.

What does a 40% ROE mean in DuPont terms?

With net income 100000, sales 1000000, assets 500000, and equity 250000, profit_margin is 0.1, asset_turnover is 2, financial_leverage is 2, and roe is 0.4 (roe_percent 40).

What does the DuPont analysis calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
