Difference quotient calculator

Type the coefficients of a polynomial and see [f(x+h)−f(x)]/h already simplified: for f(x) = x² it becomes 2x + h, and letting h go to zero leaves the derivative 2x. Free in your browser.

The difference quotient of a function f is the classic expression f of x plus h minus f of x, all divided by h. It is the slope of the secant line through the points (x, f(x)) and (x+h, f(x+h)), and it is the algebraic object whose limit as h approaches zero becomes the derivative f prime of x. Students in precalculus and calculus one, tutors writing exam keys, and automation scripts that generate homework all need a deterministic way to expand that expression for polynomial f and cancel the common factor of h so the simplified form is ready to evaluate or to take a limit. This difference quotient calculator accepts the coefficients of a univariate polynomial with the constant term first, expands f(x+h) with the binomial theorem, subtracts f(x), divides by h symbolically, and returns a clean bivariate polynomial in x and h together with the derivative obtained by setting h to zero.

What the difference quotient is and how polynomials simplify

By definition the difference quotient is the single algebraic fraction with numerator f of x plus h minus f of x and denominator h. For an arbitrary function the numerator may not share an obvious factor of h, but for a polynomial every power (x+h) to the k expands by the binomial theorem into a sum of terms C(k,j) times x to the k minus j times h to the j.

Subtracting x to the k cancels the j equals zero term, so every remaining summand carries a positive power of h. Dividing the whole difference by h therefore lowers each power of h by one and yields a polynomial expression in the two variables x and h with no division left. That bivariate polynomial is exactly the simplified difference quotient this capability returns.

Taking the limit as h approaches zero simply drops every term that still multiplies a positive power of h, leaving the ordinary derivative f prime of x as a univariate polynomial in x. Classroom staples include f of x equals x squared, which simplifies to two x plus h, and f of x equals x cubed, which simplifies to three x squared plus three x h plus h squared; both limits recover the familiar power rule.

Constant polynomials produce the zero difference quotient and the zero derivative, matching the geometric fact that a horizontal graph has secant slope zero for every h.

Homework checks for precalculus difference quotients

Students enter textbook polynomial coefficients and compare the simplified bivariate form and derivative limit against hand expansion before submitting calculus homework.

Notebooks asserting finite differences

Evaluate the simplified expression at a concrete h and confirm agreement with a numerical forward difference of the same polynomial without importing a CAS.

What is the difference quotient of a function f?

It is [f(x+h) − f(x)] / h, the slope of the secant through (x, f(x)) and (x+h, f(x+h)). For polynomials this tool expands and cancels h to return a simplified expression in x and h.

How do I send my polynomial?

Send coeffs as a non-empty array with the constant term first: [2, −3, 1] means 2 − 3x + x². Maximum length is 33 (degree ≤ 32).

What does simplified return for f(x) = x²?

The simplified difference quotient is 2x + h.

What happens if coeffs is missing or empty?

Empty is not treated as the zero polynomial; missing data is rejected and is not billed.

What is the difference quotient of x cubed?

For f(x) = x³ it simplifies to 3x² + 3xh + h². Letting h approach zero removes the last two terms and leaves 3x², the result the power rule predicts.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Input contract, response fields, and validation errors

The array length must be at most thirty-three entries so the formal degree stays at most thirty-two, which keeps binomial coefficients exact in ordinary double precision. Absolute coefficient values must stay within one trillion. POST a JSON body with one required field: coeffs, a non-empty array of finite numbers listing the coefficients of f with the constant term first. Aliases coefficients, f, poly, and polynomial are accepted for the same array. String numbers and JSON-encoded array strings are accepted when they match a strict finite numeric pattern. On success the response echoes rounded coeffs and the formal degree, f_str as a compact human-readable polynomial, difference_quotient_raw restating the definition with your f, simplified as the cancelled bivariate expression in x and h, simplified_terms as an ordered list of objects each carrying power_x, power_h, and coefficient, derivative as the limit string f prime of x, derivative_coeffs as that derivative in constant-first form, and formula as a short English restatement of the construction. Missing coeffs, empty coefficient arrays, non-arrays, non-finite entries, lists longer than the published maximum, values outside absolute limits, and non-finite intermediate accumulations all fail with invalid_input and are never billed. Pricing is a flat $0.002 per successful request with unit item.

Where a difference quotient API earns its keep

Precalculus and calculus courses assign simplify-the-difference-quotient exercises for nearly every new family of polynomials; a deterministic oracle lets learners check the cancelled form before they take the limit by hand. Exam generators and learning-management plugins need known-good simplified expressions and derivative limits for arbitrary coefficient vectors without standing up a full computer-algebra system. Engineering notebooks that form numerical derivatives from polynomials can assert that the symbolic simplified form, evaluated at a concrete h, agrees with a forward-difference finite difference to within rounding. Keep degree and coefficient magnitudes inside the published bounds so binomial products stay finite. Prefer genuine JSON arrays when you control the client. Pair success cases such as f of x equals x squared with a deliberate missing or empty coeffs field to document the hard invalid_input path. This landing targets people searching for a difference quotient calculator, simplify f of x plus h minus f of x over h, or secant slope polynomial online; it is not a general CAS for rational or transcendental f, not a numerical derivative estimator that samples floating points only, and not a full symbolic limit engine beyond the polynomial case. Failed validation does not consume prepaid balance, which keeps exploratory scripts cheap when students omit coefficients on purpose.

Exam and LMS auto-grading oracles

Generate known-good [f(x+h)−f(x)]/h simplifications plus deliberate missing-coefficient rejections for multiple-choice keys and continuous integration fixtures.
