Rolling several high-interest balances into one installment loan is the search people type as debt consolidation calculator: they want the new monthly payment and whether the refinance actually saves interest, not a lecture on credit counseling. This capability accepts a list of current debts with remaining principal, annual rate as a percent, and remaining months, plus the consolidation loan's annual rate and term in months. It prices each existing note with the standard fully amortizing monthly payment, totals remaining interest, then prices one new loan on the combined principal.

How the old debts and the new loan are compared

Each current debt is treated as a fixed-rate loan that you keep paying to the end of its remaining months. From its balance, annual rate and months left, the calculator works out the usual level monthly payment and the interest still due. Those payments and interest figures are added across all your debts. Then the same arithmetic is applied once to a new loan whose amount is the sum of your balances, at the consolidation rate and term you entered. A debt at zero percent is allowed and is simply its balance divided by its months. The result puts the old and new monthly payment, the old and new total interest and the two savings side by side.

A lower payment is not the same as a lower cost

The most common mistake is to look only at the monthly payment. A longer term spreads the principal over more months, so the payment falls even when the total interest rises. That is why the calculator reports two separate numbers: the monthly saving, which shows the relief in your budget, and the total saving, which shows the real cost of stretching the calendar. When the total saving is negative, the new loan costs more over its life than keeping your current debts. It does not draw a month-by-month table, so use it to decide whether an offer is worth a closer look.

What remaining interest means when several debts become one loan

A debt consolidation calculator answers two cash questions at once: what will the single new installment be, and how much remaining interest disappears if today's balances are refinanced instead of paid on their current schedules. Each current debt is treated as a fixed-rate fully amortizing note.

Given outstanding principal, a nominal annual rate as a percent, and remaining months on the payoff plan, the monthly payment is the classic closed form: when the monthly rate r is positive, payment equals principal times r times one plus r to the n, divided by one plus r to the n minus one; when r is zero, payment is principal divided by n. Remaining interest on that debt is n times the payment minus principal—the interest still due if the borrower keeps paying that note to term.

What happens if the debts list is empty?

At least one current debt is required; an empty debts array is not billed.

How is the new monthly payment worked out?

Your balances are added together and priced as one fixed-rate loan at the new rate and term. In the example, 15500 at 8.99% over 48 months comes to 385.64 a month, against 688.98 on the old debts.

Does debt consolidation always save interest?

No. The total saving can be negative. Stretching a five-year mix of cards into a seven-year personal loan can raise lifetime interest even when the headline rate falls, so check the total, not just the rate.

Why are the monthly saving and the total saving different?

The monthly saving is the change in what you pay each month, 303.34 in the example. The total saving is the old remaining interest minus the new loan's interest, 279.3. A lower payment over a longer term often costs more.

How is the remaining interest on my current debts calculated?

Each debt is treated as a fixed-rate loan paid to term with its balance, rate and remaining months. Its remaining interest is the months times the payment minus the balance; the three example debts add up to 3290.02.

The response leads with new_payment and total_savings so a landing, advisor worksheet, or onboarding flow can show the cash-flow change and the lifetime interest delta from the same deterministic math that runs free in the browser and at $0.002 per successful API call. An empty debts list is rejected as invalid_input and is not billed.

What remaining interest means when several debts become one loan

Sum those remaining interest figures across every row in debts, then do the same math once for a new loan whose principal is the sum of the balances, whose rate is new_annual_rate, and whose term is new_term_months. total_savings is old remaining interest minus new lifetime interest. That delta can be negative: stretching a five-year mix of cards into a seven-year personal loan can raise lifetime interest even when the headline rate falls. monthly_savings is the change in the combined monthly outlay and is a separate number; a lower payment with a longer term often costs more interest. This endpoint isolates those two figures so a page can show both the budget relief and the true cost of stretching the calendar, without a full period-by-period amortization table.

Input contract, payment formula, and response fields

Optional decimals from zero to eight defaults to two for currency-style rounding. Currency-like fields use half-up rounding once from the closed-form payment. Zero rates are allowed and use payment equals principal over n. Send a JSON object with three required fields. debts is a non-empty array of at most thirty records; each record needs balance greater than zero (outstanding principal; aliases principal and amount), annual_rate greater than or equal to zero as a percent such that twenty-two point nine nine means twenty-two point nine nine percent per year (aliases apr and rate), and remaining_months as a positive integer from one to six hundred (aliases term_months and months). An empty debts list fails with invalid_input naming the field; that failure is not billed. new_annual_rate is the consolidation loan's nominal annual percent (aliases new_rate and consolidation_rate). new_term_months is the new loan's whole-month term from one to six hundred (aliases new_term and term_months). The engine forms a payment for every current debt, sums principal, old_payment, old_total_interest, and old_total_paid, then prices one new loan on the combined principal. Outputs include debt_count, principal, old_payment, new_payment, monthly_savings, old_total_interest, new_total_interest, total_savings, old_total_paid, new_total_paid, new_annual_rate, new_term_months, monthly_rate, and a short formula string. Missing fields, non-finite numbers, non-positive balances, negative rates, out-of-range integers, and more than thirty debts fail with invalid_input.

Where a debt consolidation calculator earns its keep

Fintech onboarding and refinance funnels pre-fill debts from linked accounts and must return a deterministic consolidation quote without standing up a servicing core. Keep debts small, pin the rounded savings in tests, and you get reproducible quotes for education pages, worksheets, and edge workers. Credit counselors and advisors run side-by-side quotes—same balances, different new_annual_rate or new_term_months—to show when a longer term buys a lower payment at the cost of extra interest. Classroom and exam tools teaching consumer credit can pin rounded new_payment and total_savings against textbook amortizations. Comparison sites sweep new_term_months to chart the trade-off between monthly cash flow and lifetime interest. This tool does not underwrite credit, compute APR under Regulation Z, add origination fees or prepayment penalties, or simulate revolving minimums that change with balance; it prices remaining interest on the given remaining_months schedules against one new fully amortizing loan.

Refinance quote on mixed consumer debts

Roll credit-card and personal-loan balances into one installment quote and show new_payment next to total_savings before the borrower applies.

Counselor and advisor worksheets

Sweep new_term_months on the same debts list to show when a longer consolidation term raises lifetime interest even as the monthly bill falls.

Onboarding and education automation

Call the API from a refinance funnel or homework tool for a deterministic new_payment and total_savings oracle that matches spreadsheet amortizations.

How are new_payment and total_savings calculated?

Each current debt is priced with the standard amortizing monthly payment over remaining_months. Remaining interest is n times that payment minus principal. The new loan uses the sum of balances, new_annual_rate, and new_term_months. total_savings is old remaining interest minus new lifetime interest; new_payment is the new loan's monthly installment.

Which fields are required on each debt?

balance (>0), annual_rate (≥0 as a percent), and remaining_months (integer 1–600). new_annual_rate and new_term_months describe the consolidation loan. decimals defaults to 2.

Can total_savings be negative?

Yes. A longer new_term_months can increase lifetime interest even when new_annual_rate is lower than the current mix. monthly_savings and total_savings are reported separately so a lower payment is not mistaken for a cheaper loan.

What does the debt consolidation calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
