Birth year calculator
Someone who is 35 in 2026 and has already had their birthday was born in 1991; before the birthday, one year earlier. Enter the age, the year it applies to and whether the birthday has passed. Free in your browser.

A birth year calculator answers the everyday question of which calendar year someone was born in when you already know their age and the year that age belongs to. Clerks, teachers, contest organisers, and product forms ask this constantly, and the answer is not always year minus age: if the birthday has not yet occurred in the reference year, the person is still living in the previous birth year. This tool never invents today from a server clock. You supply the whole-year age, an explicit reference year, and whether the birthday has already passed, and it returns the civil birth year.
What birth year from age means and why the birthday flag matters
Birth year from a stated age is a completed-year inversion, not a guess about the month and not a look-up of today's date on a server. Subtract the whole-year age from the reference year; that difference is the birth year only when the birthday has already occurred in that reference year. If the anniversary still lies ahead, the person has not yet reached the next completed year, so the civil birth year is one year earlier.
A person who is thirty-five in two thousand twenty-six and whose birthday has already passed was born in nineteen ninety-one. The same person, still thirty-five before the birthday in that same year, was born in nineteen ninety. Age zero is valid: a child who is not yet one year old and whose birthday has already occurred in the reference year was born in that same year; if the first birthday has not arrived, the birth year is the previous calendar year.
Where a birth year calculator earns its keep
School enrolment and sports age groups often store a completed age against a published cut-off year and still need the implied birth year for a roster, a badge, or a paper form that only has a year box. Contest rules, cinema ratings, and regulated product access reconstruct the year of birth from a stated age so eligibility can be checked without collecting a full date of birth. Human-resources onboarding and insurance snapshots invert a recorded age back to a birth year when a legacy file never stored the date.
Parent dashboards and classroom demos can run the free in-browser birth year calculator without installing a date library or shipping a timezone database to every client. Keep expectations honest: this capability inverts Gregorian completed years from an explicit age, year, and birthday flag; it does not invent today, parse a full birth date, label a generation, or count days until the next party.
Pair it with a whole-year age tool when you already have two dates, and with a generation-cohort helper when the product copy wants Millennial or Gen Z rather than a year.
What you can do with it
Roster year from a stated age
Turn a completed age and a published cut-off year into a birth year for school, league, or contest rosters without collecting a full date of birth.
What year was I born
Enter how old you are now, the year that age belongs to, and whether your birthday has already happened to see the civil birth year.
Legacy file backfill
Invert a stored age against an audit year so HR or insurance exports can fill a missing birth-year column with a reproducible integer.
FAQ
How does this birth year calculator work?
The engine returns year minus age when the birthday has already occurred, or that result minus one when it has not.
What if the age is negative?
Age cannot be negative; correct the value rather than expecting a future birth year.
Why do I have to say whether the birthday has passed?
Two people who are both thirty-five in the same calendar year can have different birth years, depending on whether their anniversary has already occurred. The flag removes that off-by-one.
What does the birth year calculator cost?
The browser tool is free on your device.
Why do I have to type the reference year instead of using today?
Because the calculator never reads today's date on its own: you state the year in which the person has that age. The same three answers always give the same birth year, which also works for ages recorded years ago.

Published price — no tokens, no invented credits. A failed task is never charged.
Errors
| HTTP | Code | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
401 | unauthorized | Missing or invalid API key. |
402 | insufficient_balance | Your balance doesn't cover the task price. |
404 | unknown_type | That task type doesn't exist. |
429 | rate_limited | Too many requests. Use the webhook instead of polling. |
Technical notes
The same inputs always produce the same integer in a browser, in continuous integration, and on the API. A negative age fails with invalid_input and is not billed. Successful API calls use the published $0.002 base price.
What birth year from age means and why the birthday flag matters
The engine never samples a host clock, a time zone, or daylight-saving tables, so the same triple of age, reference year, and birthday-passed flag always produces the same integer in a browser, in continuous integration, and on the API. Negative ages are impossible and fail with invalid_input instead of inventing a future birth year. This is not an exact date-of-birth solver and not a generation-cohort label: it returns only the calendar year of birth.
Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour
A negative age is rejected with a clear message that age cannot be negative. Flip the flag to false and the year becomes nineteen ninety. The engine never defaults the reference year to the host clock, so a missing year is an error rather than a silent today. POST a compact JSON body with three required fields: age, a non-negative whole number of completed years; year, the reference calendar year in which that age applies; and birthday_passed, a boolean that is true when the anniversary has already occurred in that year. Optional aliases reference_year, as_of, and as_of_year map to year so form builders and SDKs can keep a familiar name; birthday_reached and had_birthday map to birthday_passed. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON integer or as a numeric string; booleans also accept the common yes, no, one, and zero spellings. Missing fields, empty strings, non-integers, and non-boolean flags fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. Example: age thirty-five, year two thousand twenty-six, birthday_passed true yields nineteen ninety-one.
Where a birth year calculator earns its keep
Call the prepaid API when eligibility pipelines, visa worksheets, or payroll backfills need a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request.
Technical questions
Does the calculator use the current year automatically?
No. year is required. The engine never reads the system clock, so results stay identical in CI, browsers, and API workers.
