Date to date calculator

From 15 January 2020 to 25 July 2026 is 6 years, 6 months and 10 days. Enter two dates and get the completed years, leftover months and leftover days between them, the way a lease or a visa file states a span. Free in your browser.

A date to date calculator tells you how much civil calendar time sits between two explicit days: completed years, leftover months, and leftover days. Searchers type date to date when they need that mixed breakdown for a lease, a project, a visa window, or a personal milestone, not a whole-year age and not a raw total of midnights. This tool never invents today from a host clock.

What a date to date calendar difference actually counts

Date to date is a civil span, not an age label and not a clock duration. The engine takes the earlier of the two dates and walks forward in whole calendar months, clamping the day-of-month when the landing month is shorter, until one more month would pass the later date. The leftover gap is then counted as whole civil days.

Years are the whole-month total divided by twelve; months are that total modulo twelve; days finish the triple. January thirty-first plus one month becomes the last day of February, whether that last day is the twenty-eighth or the twenty-ninth, so a span that starts on a long-month day never invents a March first by overflowing. The same pair of civil dates always produces the same years, months, and days because the engine never samples a host clock, a time zone, or daylight-saving tables.

Equal dates return zero in every component and mark direction as zero. If the end comes before the start, the years-months-days triple is still the absolute calendar length and direction is backward, so a reversed pair does not fail and does not invent a negative age. The formatted string joins the three components into a readable line such as six years, six months, ten days for labels and receipts.

Use a neighbouring whole-year age tool when the search is how old someone is, and a months-only helper when the product copy never mentions leftover years; use this page when the query is date to date and the answer must be the mixed civil breakdown.

Where a date to date calculator earns its keep

Lease desks and housing portals need years, months, and leftover days between a move-in date and a move-out date, not a single integer age and not a business-day count that skips weekends. Project managers print the same triple on a kickoff memo so a programme that started in mid January and closed in late July is described as six years, six months, and ten days when those are the civil figures, instead of a floating average of thirty point four days that drifts across February.

Visa and residence files store the mixed span against two explicit stamps so a reviewer can replay the same pair months later and obtain the same breakdown. Personal dashboards use the free in-browser date to date calculator for relationship milestones, study periods, and how long a subscription actually ran, without installing a date library or shipping a timezone database to every client.

Pair it with a whole-year age tool when the form asks only how old someone is, and with a countdown helper when the product copy talks about days remaining until one event.

Lease and tenancy terms

Pass a move-in date and a move-out date to show years, leftover months, and leftover days for a tenancy file without host-clock drift.

Project and programme duration

Enter a kickoff date and a close date to print a civil years-months-days span on a status memo or a funding report.

Personal milestones between two days

Measure how long a relationship, a course, or a subscription lasted between two explicit calendar dates.

How does this date to date calculator count years, months, and days?

The engine walks whole calendar months from the earlier date, clamps long-month days to the last day of a shorter month, then reports leftover civil days.

What if the end date is earlier than the start date?

Years, months, and days are the absolute civil span; direction is set to backward so a form can label the pair as reversed without inventing a negative age.

What does a date to date calculation cost?

The browser tool is free on your device.

What happens when the start date is the last day of a long month?

Adding a month lands on the last day of the shorter month instead of spilling into the next one. From the last day of January, one month later is the last day of February.

Can I also see the total number of days?

Yes. Next to the years, months and days you get the plain count of days between the two dates: from 15 January 2020 to 25 July 2026 that is 2383 days.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

curl -X POST https://api.kit.forhosting.com/life/date-to-date \

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

You send both endpoints as civil YYYY-MM-DD values, the engine validates each day under proleptic Gregorian leap rules, and the same pair always returns the same triple in a browser, in continuous integration, and on the API. Impossible calendar days fail with invalid_input and are not billed. Successful API calls use the published $0.002 base price.

What a date to date calendar difference actually counts

Field total_days is the exclusive civil day difference between the two ordinals, useful when a report also needs an unordered length in days.

Input contract, calendar validation, and the response shape

Each value should be a civil calendar day in YYYY-MM-DD form, for example two thousand twenty hyphen zero one hyphen fifteen for the start and two thousand twenty-six hyphen zero seven hyphen twenty-five for the end. You may prefix a full ISO-8601 datetime; if a time is present only the calendar date part is used, because a date to date measure is a civil-day span, not a clock duration with time zones. Years range from one through nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine, months must be one through twelve, and the day must exist in that month under Gregorian leap rules, including February twenty-nine only in leap years. POST a compact JSON body with two required string fields: from and to. Optional aliases start, begin, start_date, and date_from map to from; end, until, end_date, and date_to map to to so form builders and SDKs can keep familiar names. Impossible pairs such as two thousand twenty-three hyphen zero two hyphen twenty-nine are rejected with invalid_input instead of being clamped into March. Missing fields, empty strings, and non-string values fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. Both endpoints are mandatory on purpose: a date to date calculator that silently substitutes the host wall clock produces different answers in continuous integration, on a laptop flying across a meridian, and on a worker in Coordinated Universal Time, which breaks audits and reproducible exports.

Where a date to date calculator earns its keep

Call the prepaid API when contract pipelines, tenancy exports, or programme registries need a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Keep expectations honest: this capability measures Gregorian civil time between two explicit dates; it does not skip weekends as business duration, load public holiday calendars, convert lunar months, default a missing endpoint to today on the server, or reframe the span as an age.

Does the date to date calculator use today's date automatically?

No. Both from and to are required. The engine never reads the system clock, so results stay identical in CI, browsers, and API workers.

Which inputs are rejected as invalid dates?

Any value that is not a real Gregorian day fails with invalid_input: a missing field, a non-string, a malformed token, a month outside one through twelve, or a day that does not exist in that month, including 29 February in a common year.
