A wind turbine converts kinetic energy in moving air into mechanical shaft work and then electricity. Site scouts, students, and small-project designers often need a transparent wattage and annual-energy figure from four numbers they already have: rotor diameter, mean wind speed, air density, and the rotor power coefficient. This wind turbine energy output calculator applies the actuator-disk kinetic-flux formula: power in watts is one-half times air density times swept area times wind speed cubed times the efficiency coefficient Cp, with swept area equal to pi times diameter squared over four. Annual energy in kilowatt-hours is that power times 8760 hours divided by 1000, treating the stated wind speed as a constant for the year.

What wind-turbine power means and how P = ½ ρ A v³ Cp is applied

Instantaneous wind-turbine power in this capability is the kinetic energy flux through the rotor disk times a power coefficient, not a manufacturer power curve and not a Weibull site assessment. The actuator-disk model starts from the mass of air that would pass through the swept area A in one second, density times area times speed, and from the kinetic energy per unit mass, one-half speed squared.

Their product is one-half times density times area times speed cubed: the available wind power in watts when density is in kilograms per cubic metre, area in square metres, and speed in metres per second. The rotor cannot extract all of that flux. Betz's limit says the theoretical maximum power coefficient Cp is sixteen twenty-sevenths, about zero point five nine three.

Real horizontal-axis machines typically operate between about zero point three and zero point four five on the rising part of the curve, below rated speed. This calculator multiplies the available flux by the efficiency coefficient you supply, so power equals one-half times air density times swept area times wind speed cubed times Cp. Swept area is the disk pi D squared over four, where D is the rotor diameter in metres, not the tower height and not the blade chord.

Annual energy in kilowatt-hours is that instantaneous power times eight thousand seven hundred sixty hours in a non-leap year, divided by one thousand watt-hours per kilowatt-hour. That annualization treats the stated wind speed as constant for the whole year: it is a first-order bound from a mean speed, not a capacity-factor or Weibull integral. The tool does not apply cut-in, rated, or cut-out speeds, does not fetch weather, and does not convert kilowatt-hours to money or carbon.

It answers the watts-and-annual-energy question from diameter, wind speed, density, and Cp so you can pair the result with your own tariff, emissions factor, or measured capacity factor.

What to enter, and why wind speed cannot be negative

A negative wind speed is rejected because kinetic energy flux is undefined for a reversed speed in this first-order model: there is no negative v that still cubes into a meaningful wattage, so the task fails rather than returning a signed power that a buggy client might treat as generation. Zero wind speed is valid and yields power of zero and annual energy of zero. Diameter and density must be strictly positive; a zero-area disk or a vacuum is not a turbine.

Efficiency must lie in the closed interval from zero through one; values above one would claim more than the kinetic flux. Numeric fields are rounded to twelve decimal places for stable goldens across runtimes. Example: an eighty-metre rotor, ten metres per second, density 1.225, and Cp 0.4 yields about 1.23 megawatts and about 10.8 million kilowatt-hours if that speed holds all year.

Site-scout and small-project first-pass quotes

Turn rotor diameter, a mean wind speed, air density, and an assumed Cp into instantaneous watts and a constant-speed annual kilowatt-hour bound before a manufacturer curve or Weibull yield.

What happens if wind speed is negative?

A negative wind speed is rejected and is not billed; zero wind speed is valid and yields power of zero.

What formula does the wind turbine energy calculator use?

The actuator-disk kinetic-flux model: swept area A = π D² / 4, power P = ½ ρ A v³ Cp in watts, annual energy = P × 8760 / 1000 kWh treating the stated speed as constant for the year.

Is this a manufacturer power curve or a Weibull yield assessment?

No. It is a first-order estimate from diameter, wind speed, density, and Cp. It does not apply cut-in, rated, or cut-out speeds, a capacity factor, or a Weibull k. Pair it with a measured curve or a resource model for bankable yield.

What is the Betz limit for a wind turbine?

It is the theoretical ceiling on how much of the wind's power a rotor can capture: 16/27, about 0.593. No real machine reaches it, so the coefficient you enter should stay below that value.

Does the yearly figure assume the wind blows all year?

Yes. It treats your wind speed as constant for all 8760 hours of a year, so it is an upper bound from a mean speed. Cut-in, rated and cut-out speeds and seasonal swings are not applied.

A negative wind speed is physically meaningless and fails with invalid_input. The same pure analytic module powers the free browser path and the prepaid API path at $0.002 per successful call.

Input contract, response shape, and why a negative wind speed is rejected

POST a JSON body with four required finite numbers: rotor_diameter_m, the positive rotor diameter D in metres; wind_speed_ms, the non-negative wind speed v in metres per second; air_density, the positive air density ρ in kilograms per cubic metre (ISA sea-level dry air is 1.225); and efficiency, the power coefficient Cp between zero and one inclusive. Accept aliases diameter, diameter_m, rotor_diameter, and D for the diameter; wind_speed, speed, v, and wind for the wind speed; density, rho, and air_density_kg_m3 for density; and cp, power_coefficient, coefficient, efficiency_coefficient, and Cp for the coefficient. Each field may arrive as a JSON number or as a decimal numeric string. Missing fields, empty strings, booleans, non-finite values, and magnitudes beyond the supported ceilings fail with invalid_input naming the field. On success the body echoes the cleaned inputs, reports swept_area_m2, the primary power_w in watts, annual_energy_kwh, hours_per_year of 8760, betz_limit of sixteen twenty-sevenths, plus formula, equation, method actuator_disk_cp, and a short steps array. This endpoint does not apply a power curve, a Weibull k, or a capacity factor.

Where a wind turbine energy calculator earns its keep

Community-energy groups and rooftop or farm-scale installers use a wind turbine power calculator to turn a candidate rotor diameter, a site mean speed, a local air density, and an assumed Cp into watts and a first-order annual kilowatt-hour figure before they open a manufacturer curve or a WAsP workbook. Invalid diameters, densities, coefficients, or a negative wind speed do not consume balance. For a Beaufort conversion or a crosswind component use a sibling calculator; this page answers the search for turbine watts and annual energy from D, v, ρ, and Cp. Classroom fluid-mechanics labs and renewable-energy courses need a deterministic oracle that rejects a negative wind speed as invalid_input instead of returning a signed cube that a buggy grader might treat as success. Spreadsheet and dashboard authors who already hold diameter and a mean speed often want the same ½ρAv³Cp product in an API so a landing page, LMS plugin, or edge worker can show watts and annual energy without embedding math that drifts from the documented formula. Keep requests small, pin power_w and annual_energy_kwh in tests, and you get reproducible output for quotes, homework, and edge workers without standing up a full wind-resource suite of your own.

Classroom actuator-disk checks

Let students and LMS graders verify P = ½ ρ A v³ Cp and E = P × 8760 / 1000, with a clear invalid_input when wind speed is negative.

Dashboards and automation without a resource model

Call the same analytic module from a landing widget or a prepaid API so displayed watts and annual energy never diverge from the documented formula.

How do I estimate wind turbine power and annual energy?

Send rotor_diameter_m (positive metres), wind_speed_ms (non-negative m/s), air_density (positive kg/m³), and efficiency (Cp from 0 through 1). The API returns power_w = ½ × ρ × A × v³ × Cp with A = π D² / 4, and annual_energy_kwh = P × 8760 / 1000.

What does the wind turbine energy calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
