This Indian COVID-19 vaccine queue estimator maps age, occupation, and comorbidity status onto the 2021 Ministry of Health and Family Welfare National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme that ran through Co-WIN. It returns the priority group and an estimated wait in days under frozen programme-open dates and published cohort sizes. Healthcare workers land in group 1, which opened on 16 January 2021. Frontline workers in police, armed forces, municipal services, and disaster response land in group 2, which opened on 2 February 2021. Citizens aged 60 and over land in group 3. Citizens aged 45 to 59 with a specified comorbidity land in group 4. Remaining people aged 45 to 59 land in group 5, which opened to all 45-plus adults on 1 April 2021. Remaining adults aged 18 to 44 land in group 6, which opened on 1 May 2021. Younger ages follow the later paediatric calendar.

How the 2021 Indian Co-WIN groups become a queue position and wait

India opened COVID-19 vaccination on 16 January 2021 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme, with registration, appointment slots, and digital certificates flowing through Co-WIN. Priority group 1 covered about ten million healthcare workers: doctors, nurses, auxiliary nurse midwives, accredited social health activists, paramedics, and hospital or clinic staff who faced infection risk from the first day of the campaign.

Priority group 2 covered about twenty million frontline workers in the police and armed forces, municipal and sanitation services, disaster-management volunteers, prison staff, and related COVID containment roles; that group opened on 2 February 2021. Priority group 3 covered citizens aged sixty years and above, a cohort the ministry sized at about ten crore people, opening on 1 March 2021.

On the same March date, priority group 4 covered citizens aged forty-five to fifty-nine years who declared a specified comorbidity from the ministry list — heart failure or coronary disease, diabetes with complications, chronic kidney or severe respiratory disease, cancer, and similar conditions — about 2.7 crore people. Remaining adults aged forty-five to fifty-nine entered when eligibility expanded to all people aged forty-five and over on 1 April 2021. Remaining adults aged eighteen to forty-four entered on 1 May 2021.

Adolescents aged twelve to seventeen and children aged five to eleven followed in January and March 2022. This estimator assigns the highest matching group for the submitted profile, then places older people earlier inside that group under a uniform-age assumption on those frozen cohort sizes. Estimated wait in days is the group's opening day counted from 16 January 2021 plus the intra-group rank divided by a frozen two-million-first-doses-per-day throughput.

Queue position is one plus the people in all earlier groups plus the estimated older people in the current group. The result is a reproducible teaching number, not a live Co-WIN appointment and not a substitute for the booking tools that states actually ran.

Where an Indian vaccine-queue estimator earns its keep, pricing, and limits

Newsrooms and explainer desks reconstructing the 2021 Indian rollout use an India vaccine queue calculator so a reader can type an age, pick an occupation, declare comorbidity, and see group 3 versus group 6 without scraping archived PIB releases. Civics and public-health classrooms grade the same three-field profile against a deterministic oracle instead of a spreadsheet that silently ranks a fifty-nine-year-old with a sixty-year-old. Failed validation does not consume balance.

This is an educational reconstruction of published 2021 cohort sizes and opening dates, not a diagnostic medical device, not an official Co-WIN waitlist, and not advice about whether any person should have been vaccinated. Eligibility rules later changed for children, precaution doses, and state booking windows; this calculator freezes the original national priority table so two clients never drift. People making personal health decisions should follow current official advice from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

News explainers of the 2021 Co-WIN rollout

Let a reader enter age, occupation, and comorbidity and show the matching National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme group plus estimated wait next to the frozen cohort sizes.

Classroom civics and public-health grading

Mark three-field vaccine-priority items with a deterministic oracle that rejects a non-positive age and never invents a group outside 1–9.

What happens if age is not a positive number?

Zero, negative, and non-numeric values are rejected. Invalid input is not billed.

Which occupations map to the first two priority groups?

healthcare maps to priority group 1 (healthcare workers). frontline maps to priority group 2 (police, armed forces, municipal, sanitation, and disaster workers). other is the general public, ranked by age and comorbidity. Occupation rules apply from age 18.

Does a comorbidity move someone earlier in the Indian queue?

Yes for adults aged 45 to 59: comorbidity comorbid places them in priority group 4 unless a healthcare or frontline occupation already applies. People aged 60 and over are already in group 3. Adults 18 to 44 stay in group 6 under the original adult-first table.

Is this an official Co-WIN waitlist, and what does it cost?

No. It is an educational reconstruction of published 2021 cohort sizes and opening dates, not medical advice and not a government booking tool. The browser tool is free.

When could a 65-year-old get the COVID vaccine in India?

From 1 March 2021, when group 3 for citizens aged 60 and over opened. This profile is estimated at place 118,888,889, with a wait of 88 days counted from the 16 January 2021 launch.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Finite-domain values are enums so the form paints a select instead of a free-text trap. Optional keys are omitted rather than set to null. POST a JSON body with three required fields. age is a positive finite number of years; numeric strings such as "65" are accepted, as is the alias age_years. Zero, negative values, NaN, and Infinity fail because the product promise is that age must be a positive number. occupation is one of the closed categories healthcare, frontline, or other; the alias occupation_category is accepted. comorbidity is none or comorbid; the alias comorbidity_status is accepted. A missing field, a non-finite age, an occupation or comorbidity value outside the enum, or an age above 120 fails with invalid_input naming the field. Those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes age, occupation, and comorbidity, reports priority_group as 1 through 9, and reports priority_label in plain language. band and band_label name the sub-cohort used for ranking. queue_position is the one-based estimate; people_ahead is queue_position minus one. estimated_wait_days is the integer wait; estimated_wait restates it as a days string. method is always mohfw_national_vaccination_programme_2021 so clients can pin the rule set. group_opened is the frozen calendar date when that group became eligible. notes restates why that group was chosen. This endpoint does not collect state, district, Co-WIN beneficiary ID, or pregnancy status, so it cannot reproduce every ministry footnote; it reproduces the three public levers people actually remember: age, occupation, and comorbidity. Pair the numbers with your own explainer copy if you need a chart of crores remaining; this endpoint ranks one profile and does not emit plots.

Where an Indian vaccine-queue estimator earns its keep, pricing, and limits

Keep requests small, pin priority_group and estimated_wait_days in tests, and you get a reproducible Indian vaccine-queue estimate for homework, graphics, and edge workers without standing up a booking stack of your own.

Historical timelines and museum interactives

Drive a kiosk or documentary companion from the same parse contract the API bills, so the free widget and the archive backend never disagree on an Indian queue estimate.

How is the Indian COVID vaccine queue position and wait estimated?

The calculator assigns the highest matching 2021 MoHFW / Co-WIN priority group from age, occupation, and comorbidity, then ranks older people first inside that group. estimated_wait_days is the group's opening day from 16 January 2021 plus intra-group rank at two million first doses per day.
