Wales did not offer first COVID-19 doses to everyone at once. The Welsh Government and NHS Wales followed the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation so older-adult care home residents, their carers, frontline health and social care workers, clinically extremely vulnerable people on the shielding list, unpaid carers, and then the rest of the population by descending age received scarce supply first. This Wales vaccine queue tool applies that Welsh rollout to age, occupation, and clinical vulnerability and returns the assigned priority group number. Occupation and clinical vulnerability have documented defaults so a lone age still yields a group.

How the Welsh JCVI table ranks groups from age, occupation, and clinical vulnerability

The Welsh Government published a COVID-19 vaccination strategy that adopted the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation Phase 1 order so NHS Wales and the seven health boards could invite people when first doses were scarce. Group 1 covers residents in a care home for older adults and their carers. Group 2 covers everyone aged eighty and over together with frontline health and social care workers employed by NHS Wales or social care.

Groups 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9 are pure descending age bands of seventy-five, sixty-five, sixty, fifty-five, and fifty. Group 4 mixes people aged seventy to seventy-four with clinically extremely vulnerable individuals who had been asked to shield. Group 6 covers people aged sixteen to sixty-four with underlying health conditions that raise the risk of serious disease, and Wales also invited unpaid carers in that same band rather than leaving informal care out of the table.

After Phase 1, Wales invited remaining adults by decade instead of as a single remainder: remaining people aged forty to forty-nine as group 10, thirty to thirty-nine as group 11, and eighteen to twenty-nine as group 12. Groups 13 through 15 close sixteen-to-seventeen-year-olds, twelve-to-fifteen-year-olds, and children under twelve so every nonnegative age receives a group instead of a silent gap. The engine collects every matching slice, then keeps the highest-priority group: an eighty-year-old care home carer is therefore group 1 from occupation, not group 2 from age.

A forty-year-old on the shielding list is group 4 from clinical vulnerability, not group 10 from remaining-adult age. The ranking is an educational replay of that historical Welsh table, not a clinic appointment, not a health-board booking portal, and not a substitute for the current Green Book schedule used in Wales.

Who this Welsh queue serves, and its limits

Public-health classrooms and tabletop exercises use a Wales vaccine-queue calculator so students can see why a care home resident in Cardiff, a seventy-six-year-old in Gwynedd, a clinically extremely vulnerable forty-year-old in Swansea, an unpaid carer in Newport, and a healthy thirty-year-old in Wrexham were not interchangeable when first doses were scarce, and so they can read a concrete priority group number instead of a vague early-2021 label.

Occupational-health and emergency-preparedness teams run the same contract during scarce-dose drills without standing up a live immunization registry or scraping an NHS Wales or health-board booking site. Journalists and policy explainers need a deterministic oracle that returns group 4 for a forty-year-old on the shielding list, group 2 for an NHS Wales nurse aged forty, group 6 for an unpaid carer of the same age, and group 11 for a healthy adult of the same age with no essential occupation, instead of a prose summary that drifts between articles.

Keep expectations educational: this is not a medical-device diagnosis, not an NHS Wales booking tool, and not the current seasonal COVID-19 or influenza schedule, which UKHSA, the Green Book, and Welsh Government circulars update separately. People seeking a real appointment should follow NHS Wales, their local health board, their GP, or their clinician, not any single automated label from a historical allocation table.

Classroom Welsh allocation drills

Let students submit age, occupation, and clinical vulnerability and see which Welsh JCVI group the 2020–21 NHS Wales table assigns, including why a higher group wins when two slices match.

Occupational-health scarce-dose exercises

Rank a workforce roster into Welsh groups 1–15 during preparedness drills without connecting to a live immunization registry or inventing a custom spreadsheet of care-home, NHS Wales, CEV, unpaid-carer, and age rules.

What happens if age is not a nonnegative integer?

Age must be a whole number of years from 0 through 120. Missing, negative, fractional, or non-numeric age is not billed.

How is the Wales table different from the England vaccine queue?

Wales adopted the same JCVI Phase 1 groups 1–9, then invited remaining adults by decade (groups 10–12) and placed unpaid carers in group 6.

Does a clinically extremely vulnerable flag always assign group 4?

Only when no higher group applies. Care home residents and care home staff remain group 1. People aged 80 and over, and frontline health and social care workers, remain group 2. People aged 75–79 remain group 3. Underlying conditions without CEV assign group 6 only for ages 16–64. Unpaid carers aged 16 and over also assign group 6 unless a higher group already applies.

Which Welsh vaccine group was an 82-year-old in?

Group 2, which joined everyone aged 80 and over with frontline health and social care workers employed by NHS Wales or social care. The result is group 2 with priority rank 2.

Which group were adults aged eighteen to twenty-nine in Wales?

Group 12, the last of the three decade groups Wales used after Phase 1. People aged forty to forty-nine were group 10 and those aged thirty to thirty-nine group 11, while sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds came next in group 13.

Age must be a nonnegative integer; a missing, negative, fractional, or non-numeric age fails with invalid_input and is not billed.

Input contract, assigned-group response, and age validation

Failed validation does not consume balance. POST a JSON body with required age as a nonnegative integer from zero through one hundred twenty completed years. Occupation is the closed set none, care_home_staff, health_social_care, or unpaid_carer; omitted occupation defaults to none so a lone age still yields a group. clinical_vulnerability is the closed set none, care_home_resident, clinically_extremely_vulnerable, or underlying; omitted clinical vulnerability defaults to none. care_home_staff maps to group 1 (carers of older-adult care home residents). health_social_care maps to group 2 (frontline NHS Wales and social care workers). unpaid_carer maps to group 6 for ages sixteen and over, matching the Welsh invitation of informal carers alongside the at-risk sixteen-to-sixty-four band. care_home_resident maps to group 1. clinically_extremely_vulnerable maps to group 4 unless a higher group already applies. underlying maps to group 6 only for ages sixteen to sixty-four, and only when no higher group already applies. Pick the highest-priority matching clinical value when several apply: a shielding-list resident of an older-adult care home should send care_home_resident, not underlying. Aliases exist for each canonical name so older forms can map without renaming columns. Age that is missing, negative, fractional, boolean, infinite, or otherwise not a nonnegative integer fails with invalid_input naming age and is not charged. Unknown occupation strings and unknown clinical_vulnerability strings fail the same way. On success the body echoes age, occupation, and clinical_vulnerability, then returns priority_group as the machine key 1 through 15; priority_group_label for display; priority_rank as 1 for the highest priority through 15 for remaining children under twelve; qualifying_group and qualifying_group_label for the slice that won the rank; reasons as every matching slice key; framework naming the Welsh Government and NHS Wales table; and method wales_jcvi_queue_v1. Identical inputs always yield identical JSON because the path never touches a network, a model, a clock, or a random generator.

Where a Wales vaccine-queue API earns its keep, and honest limits

The browser tool is free; prepaid API calls cost $0.002 per successful item and invalid input is never billed.

Explainers and deterministic fixtures

Pin the assigned priority group number in journalism notebooks and continuous-integration tests so a healthy adult, a shielding-list adult, an unpaid carer, and a care home worker never silently swap labels.

How does the Wales vaccine queue tool assign a priority group?

It ranks age, occupation (none, care_home_staff, health_social_care, or unpaid_carer), and clinical_vulnerability (none, care_home_resident, clinically_extremely_vulnerable, or underlying) against the Welsh Government/NHS Wales COVID-19 order and returns the highest matching group number (1 through 15).

What does the Wales vaccine queue calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
