Screen size converter

A 55-inch 16:9 screen measures 139.7 cm diagonally, about 121.75910254 cm wide and 68.48949518 cm high. Enter a diagonal in inches or centimetres plus the aspect ratio to see whether a TV or monitor fits your stand, wall mount or cabinet. Free in your browser.

Television and monitor sizes are almost always quoted as a single diagonal number, yet the space a panel actually occupies depends on both that diagonal and the aspect ratio of the active area. A fifty-five inch 16:9 set is wider and shorter than a fifty-five inch 4:3 panel with the same diagonal, and buyers who only convert inches to centimetres still cannot tell whether a stand or wall niche will fit. This screen size converter takes a positive diagonal in inches or centimetres, converts it with the exact SI factor of one inch equals 2.54 centimetres, and derives physical width and height for any valid W:H aspect ratio using Pythagoras.

Why the diagonal alone is not enough

Screen sizes are almost always sold as a single number, the diagonal printed on the box. That number says nothing about shape. A 55-inch 16:9 television is wider and shorter than a 55-inch 4:3 panel, so converting inches to centimetres with the exact factor of 2.54 still does not tell you whether a set will fit a stand or a wall niche. This converter takes the diagonal in inches or centimetres, adds the aspect ratio, and returns the diagonal, width, height and approximate area in both inches and centimetres, so one result serves the shop listing and a metric installation drawing alike.

How width and height are worked out

The diagonal and the two sides of the picture form a right triangle, so the sizes follow from Pythagoras. The diagonal is divided by the square root of the ratio's width squared plus its height squared, then multiplied by each side of the ratio. For a 55-inch 16:9 screen that gives 47.93665454 inches wide and 26.96436818 inches high. Common ratios are 16:9 for most TVs and monitors, 4:3 for older sets, 16:10 for many laptops, and 21:9 or 32:9 for ultrawide displays. If a listing leaves out the ratio, 16:9 is the usual choice for a modern TV, but check specialty or vintage gear. The figures describe the picture area, so leave room for the frame when you measure a niche.

Diagonal units, aspect ratios, and how width and height are derived

Start with the published screen diagonal, the number printed on the box and in marketing copy. If you omit unit, inches are assumed because most global TV listings still lead with inches even when the rest of the page is metric. Aspect ratio is required: send a string such as 16:9, 4:3, 21:9, or 32:9, or the slash form 16/9.

Results are returned in inches and centimetres for diagonal, width, height, and approximate active area so one response covers both retail copy and metric installation drawings.

TV and monitor shopping fit checks

Shoppers convert a listed diagonal to centimetres and see actual width and height for 16:9 or ultrawide panels before ordering a stand, wall mount, or cabinet.

What aspect ratios are supported?

Any positive W:H or W/H pair, such as 16:9, 4:3, 21:9, or 16:10.

Can I enter the diagonal in centimetres?

Yes. Set unit to "cm" (or "centimeter" / "centimetres") with a positive diagonal. The response still returns both inches and centimetres for all dimensions.

Is the screen size converter free?

The browser tool runs free on your device.

Does this include the TV bezel or cabinet size?

No. Dimensions are for the ideal active panel from the marketed diagonal and aspect ratio. Leave clearance for bezels, speakers, and stands when planning furniture fit.

Are two 55-inch screens always the same width?

No. A 55-inch 16:9 set is wider and shorter than a 55-inch 4:3 panel with the same diagonal, because width and height depend on both the diagonal and the aspect ratio.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Diagonal units, aspect ratios, and how width and height are derived

Send it as the required field diagonal (aliases size, d, and diagonal_size are accepted) together with unit set to in or inch when the number is imperial, or cm when it is metric. Both parts must be positive finite numbers; zero, negative, empty, or non-numeric parts are rejected as invalid aspect ratio with invalid_input so furniture and CAD tools never receive a nonsense panel. Internally the engine converts the diagonal to inches, divides by the Euclidean norm of the aspect pair, and multiplies back by each component: width equals aspect_w times diagonal over the square root of aspect_w squared plus aspect_h squared, and height uses aspect_h the same way. Identical inputs always produce identical JSON because the path is pure arithmetic with no network, no random seed, and no wall clock.

Reading the dimensions response and choosing common ratios

Common living-room and desktop ratios include 16:9 for HDTV and most monitors, 4:3 for older sets and some medical or industrial panels, 21:9 and 32:9 for ultrawide gaming and productivity displays, and 16:10 for many laptop and professional screens. If a listing omits the ratio, assume 16:9 for modern consumer TVs but confirm for specialty or vintage gear. On success the response echoes the input diagonal and unit, then diagonal_in and diagonal_cm so you always see both systems even when you only supplied one. Fields aspect_ratio, aspect_w, and aspect_h restate the normalized ratio label used for the calculation. The practical fit numbers are width_in, height_in, width_cm, and height_cm: those are the active-panel extents under the ideal rectangle model, not cabinet depth or bezel thickness. Area_in2 and area_cm2 multiply width by height for rough comparisons of how much glass you get at a given diagonal. The formula string restates the Pythagoras scaling and the SI conversion factor for transparency in audit logs, and method is always tv_size_pythagoras so downstream code can branch without sniffing shapes. Missing diagonal, non-positive diagonal, unknown units, and invalid aspect ratios all fail with invalid_input and are not charged after the engine rejects the request.

API usage, pricing, fit workflows, and practical limits

Call the free in-browser screen size converter for shopping comparisons, wall-mount planning, and classroom demos of Pythagoras without installing a spreadsheet. Remember that marketed diagonals refer to the viewable panel, not the outer plastic or metal frame, so leave a small clearance for bezels and ventilation when checking a niche. Authors shipping SDKs can map width and height fields directly into tables that show inches and centimetres side by side—the same dual units shoppers expect when comparing global listings. Send a JSON body with the required positive diagonal, optional unit defaulting to inches, and a required aspect_ratio string such as 16:9. Use the prepaid API when a retailer product page, home-theatre configurator, logistics packing estimator, or furniture marketplace needs a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with general unit converters when you also need depth or stand dimensions, or with image tools when you are generating mockups at the correct physical proportions.

Retail product pages and configurators

Merchants and home-theatre builders call the prepaid API to show dual-unit dimensions from a single diagonal and aspect ratio without maintaining spreadsheet formulas per SKU.

Classroom and documentation examples

Teachers and technical writers demonstrate Pythagoras on real screen sizes, returning structured JSON that homework tools and docs sites can pin in tests.

How do I convert a 55-inch TV to width and height?

Send JSON with diagonal: 55, unit: "in" (or omit unit), and aspect_ratio: "16:9". The response includes width_in, height_in, width_cm, height_cm, and diagonal_cm.
