Revenue growth calculator

Revenue that rose from 100,000 to 120,000 grew by 20%, an increase of 20,000 over the previous period. The result is already a percentage, and it turns negative when sales fall. Free in your browser.

Revenue growth is the period-over-period change in sales, expressed as a percentage of the previous period's revenue. This revenue growth calculator takes previous-period revenue and current-period revenue, subtracts the earlier figure from the later one, divides by the previous amount, and multiplies by one hundred so the result is already a percent rather than a decimal fraction. A result of 20 means sales rose twenty percent; a negative result means the top line contracted.

What revenue growth means and how the percent appears

Revenue growth is the percent change in a company's, a product line's, a region's, or a store's sales from one reporting interval to the next. Analysts, founders, and finance teams watch that figure because a rising top line often funds hiring and investment, while a contracting top line can signal lost share, weaker prices, or a one-off that will not repeat.

The simple identity over one interval is not a mystery: it is current-period revenue minus previous-period revenue, divided by previous-period revenue, then multiplied by one hundred so the result is already a percent. The identity is a single-interval rate. It is not CAGR, not a multi-year compound path, and not a revenue-multiple or EV-to-sales screen; those questions need extra inputs this landing does not invent.

When previous revenue is zero, division is undefined and the task fails instead of returning Infinity. Current revenue may be zero (a total drop from a non-zero start yields minus 100), and a negative previous figure is mathematically allowed because the denominator is still non-zero. The implementation looks up no filing, no currency conversion, and no fiscal calendar: you already have the two revenue amounts, and it applies one deterministic division so a browser check and a production job never disagree.

Investor-education widgets

Let readers enter two sales figures on a landing page and see the simple revenue growth rate as a percent, including a clear failure when the previous revenue is zero.

Classroom income-statement checks

Give students previous and current revenue and verify the period-over-period percent, including contraction cases and the hard fail on a zero previous value.

Is the growth rate a percent or a decimal fraction?

The calculator returns a percent, not a decimal fraction: 20 means a twenty percent increase. Do not multiply by one hundred again; the scale is already percent points.

Can previous or current revenue be negative, and is this CAGR?

Current revenue may be zero or negative. A negative previous revenue is allowed because the denominator is still non-zero. This is a single-interval rate, not a compound annual growth rate; CAGR needs a year count this tool does not take.

What happens if previous revenue is zero?

The calculator rejects it, because growth is measured against the previous figure and dividing by zero has no answer. A current revenue of zero is accepted and, from a positive start, gives a drop of 100%.

What does a negative growth rate mean?

That the top line shrank. Revenue that fell from 200,000 to 150,000 shows growth of minus 25%, the size of the contraction measured against the previous period.

What must the two revenue figures have in common?

The same currency, the same net or gross convention and the same company, product line or region. If one figure includes a business the other leaves out, the rate no longer compares like with like.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

The identity is undefined when previous revenue is zero, so that case is rejected with invalid_input instead of inventing a rate or returning Infinity.

What revenue growth means and how the percent appears

This revenue growth calculator returns that percent as growth_percent: 20 means sales rose twenty percent, and a negative growth_percent means the top line shrank. A concrete case: previous_revenue of 100000 and current_revenue of 120000 produce change 20000 and growth_percent 20. A contraction is first-class: previous 200000 and current 150000 produce growth_percent minus 25. Repeating decimals are rounded half-up to ten places, so previous 300 and current 400 produce growth_percent 33.3333333333 rather than an unstable binary expansion of one hundred over three.

Input contract, response shape, and the zero-previous guard

Current revenue has no such restriction; zero and negative current amounts are valid and simply produce a negative or minus-one-hundred percent when the start was positive. Pair the percent with your own formatting if a headline needs a plus sign or a localized percent glyph; keep the stored contract as the numeric percent so tests pin 20 rather than a localized string. Do not send a year count or a currency code: this landing does not annualize and does not convert currencies. Keep the two revenue figures in the same currency, the same net-versus-gross convention, and the same entity so the rate compares like with like. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers: previous_revenue (the earlier period's sales; aliases previous, prior_revenue, last_revenue, prior) and current_revenue (the later period's sales; aliases current, this_revenue, latest_revenue). Each field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string. Missing fields, empty strings, booleans, and non-finite values fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. On success the body echoes previous_revenue and current_revenue as parsed, reports change as current minus previous rounded half-up to ten decimals, reports growth_percent as the percent quotient rounded the same way, and includes a short formula string restating growth_percent = (current_revenue - previous_revenue) / previous_revenue × 100.

Where a revenue growth calculator earns its keep

Educators teaching income-statement analysis can seed classroom examples that show 100000 to 120000 as 20 percent, a decline from 200000 to 150000 as minus 25, and the hard fail when someone types a previous revenue of zero. Failed validation, including the zero-previous case, does not consume balance. Use a dedicated CAGR tool when the question is a multi-year compound rate, and keep this page for the single-interval revenue growth identity that searchers actually type. Because the implementation is tier A parse, every successful call costs the published $0.002 base price with no model tokens and no outbound network. Keep previous revenue non-zero, pin the rounded growth_percent in tests, and you get reproducible period-over-period sales-growth results for widgets, CMS embeds, and edge workers without standing up a research terminal of your own.

Earnings-season board packs

Turn last period's revenue and this period's revenue into a percent growth_percent for a ticker note, a dashboard cell, or a screening column without opening a spreadsheet.

How is the revenue growth rate calculated?

Subtract previous_revenue from current_revenue, divide by previous_revenue, and multiply by one hundred. The result is growth_percent after half-up rounding to ten places, together with the absolute change.

What happens if previous revenue is zero?

The task fails with invalid_input. Revenue growth is undefined when the previous period's revenue is zero; enter a non-zero previous_revenue. Failed validation is not billed.

What does the revenue growth calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input, including a zero previous revenue, is not billed.
