EPS growth calculator

If earnings per share go from 2 to 2.5, EPS growth is 0.25, a 25% rise; a drop from 4 to 3 shows as −0.25. Compare two periods without rebuilding EPS from net income. Free in your browser.

Earnings per share (EPS) growth is the period-over-period change in a company's earnings attributable to each outstanding common share, expressed as a decimal rather than a percent. This EPS growth calculator takes a beginning EPS and an ending EPS, subtracts the start from the finish, and divides the difference by the beginning value. The result is the simple growth rate for that interval: 0.25 means EPS rose by a quarter, while a negative decimal means earnings per share contracted.

What EPS growth means and how the decimal appears

Earnings per share, commonly abbreviated EPS, is the portion of a company's profit allocated to each outstanding common share. Investors watch the change in that figure because a rising EPS often supports a higher valuation, while a falling EPS can signal margin pressure, dilution, or a weaker top line. The simple growth rate over one reporting interval is not mysterious: it is the ending EPS minus the beginning EPS, all divided by the beginning EPS.

The identity is a single-period rate. It is not CAGR, not a multi-year compound path, and not a PEG ratio; those questions need extra inputs this landing does not invent. When beginning EPS is zero, division is undefined and the task fails instead of returning Infinity.

Ending EPS may be zero or negative, and a negative beginning EPS is mathematically allowed because the denominator is still non-zero. The implementation looks up no filing, no price, and no share count: you already have the two EPS values, and it applies one deterministic division so a browser check and a production job never disagree.

Investor-education widgets

Let readers enter two earnings-per-share figures on a landing page and see the simple growth rate as a decimal, including a clear failure when the beginning EPS is zero.

Classroom ratio-analysis checks

Give students beginning and ending EPS and verify the period-over-period rate, including contraction cases and the hard fail on a zero beginning value.

Is the growth rate a percent or a decimal fraction?

The calculator returns a decimal fraction, not percent points: 0.25 means a twenty-five percent increase. Multiply by one hundred yourself if a headline needs a percent label.

Can beginning or ending EPS be negative, and is this CAGR?

Ending EPS may be zero or negative. A negative beginning EPS is allowed because the denominator is still non-zero. This is a single-interval rate, not a compound annual growth rate; CAGR needs a year count this tool does not take.

How do I calculate EPS growth?

Subtract the beginning EPS from the ending EPS and divide by the beginning EPS. Going from 2 to 2.5 gives a change of 0.5 and a growth rate of 0.25, which is a 25% increase.

What happens if beginning EPS is zero?

The calculation is refused, because dividing by zero has no answer. Any other starting value works, including a negative one from a loss year, and the ending EPS can be zero or negative.

Should I use basic or diluted EPS?

Either one, as long as both figures follow the same convention and the same currency. Mixing a basic starting EPS with a diluted ending EPS makes the rate compare unlike things.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

The identity is undefined when beginning EPS is zero, so that case is rejected with invalid_input instead of inventing a rate.

What EPS growth means and how the decimal appears

A concrete case: beginning_eps of 2 and ending_eps of 2.5 produce change 0.5 and growth_rate 0.25, which is a twenty-five percent increase. A contraction is first-class: beginning 4 and ending 3 produce growth_rate -0.25. Repeating decimals are rounded half-up to ten places, so beginning 3 and ending 4 produce growth_rate 0.3333333333 rather than an unstable binary expansion of one third.

Input contract, response shape, and the zero-beginning guard

Ending EPS has no such restriction; zero and negative endings are valid and simply produce a negative or minus-one rate when the start was positive. Pair the decimal with your own percent formatting if a headline needs twenty-five percent; keep the stored contract as the decimal so tests pin 0.25 rather than a localized percent string. Do not send a year count or a share count: this landing does not annualize and does not reconstruct EPS from net income. Keep the two EPS figures in the same currency and the same per-share convention, basic versus diluted, so the rate compares like with like. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers: beginning_eps (the starting earnings per share for the interval; aliases beginning, start_eps, initial_eps) and ending_eps (the finishing earnings per share; aliases ending, end_eps, final_eps). Each field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string. Missing fields, empty strings, booleans, and non-finite values fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. On success the body echoes beginning_eps and ending_eps as parsed, reports change as ending minus beginning rounded half-up to ten decimals, reports growth_rate as the decimal quotient rounded the same way, and includes a short formula string restating growth_rate = (ending_eps - beginning_eps) / beginning_eps.

Where an EPS growth calculator earns its keep

Educators teaching ratio analysis can seed classroom examples that show 2.00 to 2.50 as 0.25, a decline from 4.00 to 3.00 as minus 0.25, and the hard fail when someone types a beginning EPS of zero. Failed validation, including the zero-beginning case, does not consume balance. Use a dedicated CAGR tool when the question is a multi-year compound rate, and keep this page for the single-interval EPS growth identity that searchers actually type. Because the implementation is tier A parse, every successful call costs the published $0.002 base price with no model tokens and no outbound network. Keep beginning EPS non-zero, pin the rounded growth_rate in tests, and you get reproducible earnings-per-share growth results for widgets, CMS embeds, and edge workers without standing up a research terminal of your own.

Earnings-season research notes

Turn last period's EPS and this period's EPS into a decimal growth_rate for a ticker note, a dashboard cell, or a screening column without opening a spreadsheet.

How is the EPS growth rate calculated?

Subtract beginning_eps from ending_eps and divide by beginning_eps. The result is growth_rate as a decimal after half-up rounding to ten places, together with the absolute change.

What happens if beginning EPS is zero?

The task fails with invalid_input. EPS growth is undefined when the beginning earnings per share is zero; enter a non-zero beginning_eps. Failed validation is not billed.

What does the EPS growth calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input, including a zero beginning EPS, is not billed.
