Pipe water weight calculator

A 10 m run of 50 mm pipe filled with water carries almost 20 kg, close to 2 kg on every metre. Enter the inside diameter and length to size hangers, check support spacing or plan the load of a pressure test. Free in your browser.

A pipe water weight calculator turns the inside diameter and axial length of a straight circular run into the mass of water that fills the bore, plus the weight force under standard gravity. Plumbers, mechanical designers, and facility engineers use that mass when sizing hangers, checking support spacing, estimating floor live load during hydrotesting, or converting a schedule of pipe segments into total water weight before a pressure test. Enter a positive inside diameter and length, choose millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches, or feet for each field, and optionally override the default fresh-water density of one thousand kilograms per cubic metre. The tool converts dimensions to metres, applies the cylinder formula volume equals pi times radius squared times length, multiplies by density for mass in kilograms and pounds, and reports force in newtons and pounds-force together with mass per metre and per foot so hanger tables are easy to apply.

Formulas for filled-pipe water mass and weight force

A straight circular pipe filled end to end holds a cylinder of water whose volume is pi times the square of the inside radius times the axial length. Inside radius is half of the inside diameter after both diameter and length have been converted to metres using the unit you selected for each field. One millimetre is one thousandth of a metre, one centimetre is one hundredth, one inch is exactly zero point zero two five four metres, and one foot is exactly zero point three zero four eight metres.

With volume in cubic metres, mass in kilograms is density times volume. The default density is one thousand kilograms per cubic metre, the conventional fresh-water value near four degrees Celsius; room-temperature water is often taken near nine hundred ninety-eight, and you may pass any positive density when the fluid is not cold fresh water. Mass in pounds is kilograms times two point two zero four six two two six two one eight.

Weight force under standard gravity uses g equals nine point eight zero six six five metres per second squared, so force in newtons is mass times g. On Earth under that convention, pound-mass numerically matches pound-force for the force field returned here, which is convenient when US hanger tables are written in pounds. Linear density for support spacing is total mass divided by length in metres or feet: mass per metre in kilograms and mass per foot in pounds.

The calculator assumes a full circular bore with no air pockets, no fittings volume credit, and no ovality correction; it does not add pipe steel weight, insulation, or contents other than the density you supply. Use true inside diameter from manufacturer tables rather than nominal pipe size alone when precision matters for hydrostatic loads.

Practical tips for hangers, hydrotests, and related searches

For hanger and trapeze planning, convert each run into mass per metre or per foot and multiply by the tributary spacing between supports; add empty pipe and insulation mass from manufacturer data because this calculator returns only the water contents. Prefer measured or catalogue inside diameter over nominal trade size: a two-inch schedule forty steel pipe does not have a two-inch bore.

Hot water, glycol mixes, and seawater need a density override; leaving the default one thousand is correct for cold fresh water estimates but slightly high for warm domestic water. Zero and negative dimensions are rejected so automated take-off scripts cannot invent negative load. This landing targets people searching for a pipe water weight calculator, filled pipe hanger load, or water mass from inside diameter and length; it is not a pipe volume-only geometry tool without mass, not a tank volume calculator, and not a structural hanger design code checker.

Prefer this capability when the pipe is full of water and you need mass and force for supports; if you only need hollow-pipe material volume from inner and outer radius, use a dedicated pipe volume geometry tool instead.

Hanger and support load take-off

Mechanical contractors convert run length and inside diameter into water mass per metre or foot, then size hangers and trapeze spacing for filled lines.

Hydrotest and temporary floor load

Facility engineers sum water mass across filled segments before a pressure test to check temporary rack or floor capacity.

How is pipe water weight calculated?

Convert inside diameter and length to metres, compute volume V = π (D/2)² L, then mass m = ρ V with default ρ = 1000 kg/m³.

Do I enter inside diameter or nominal pipe size?

Enter true inside (bore) diameter. Nominal trade sizes often differ from the actual ID; use manufacturer or schedule tables for accurate water mass.

Which units are supported?

Diameter and length may each use m, cm, mm, in, or ft. Defaults are mm for diameter and m for length. Results include SI and common US mass and volume units.

What happens if diameter or length is zero or negative?

Both dimensions must be strictly positive finite numbers; bad input is not billed.

Is the pipe water weight calculator free?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

How to call the API and what comes back

Send a JSON body with required inside_diameter and length as positive finite numbers. Optional diameter_unit defaults to millimetres and accepts m, cm, mm, in, or ft; aliases dia_unit, d_unit, and id_unit map to the same field. Optional length_unit defaults to metres with the same unit set; aliases len_unit and L_unit are accepted. Optional density_kg_m3 defaults to one thousand; aliases density, rho, and water_density are accepted. Field aliases for diameter include diameter, id, d, di, and bore; length aliases include L, len, and pipe_length. On success the response echoes the inputs and units, reports density_kg_m3, converts to inside_diameter_m, length_m, and radius_m, and returns cross_section_m2, volume_m3, volume_liters, volume_gallons_us, mass_kg, mass_lb, weight_force_n, weight_force_lbf, mass_per_m_kg, mass_per_ft_lb, the formula string, standard g_m_s2, and a short human-readable message. Failed validation—missing required fields, non-finite numbers, zero or negative diameter or length, an unknown unit string, or a non-positive density—returns invalid_input and is never charged. Pricing is a flat $0.002 per successful request with unit item. Keep every length field in the unit you declared rather than mixing unlabelled inches and millimetres in one call without setting diameter_unit and length_unit correctly.

Practical tips for hangers, hydrotests, and related searches

During hydrotesting, sum mass_kg across all segments that will be filled to estimate temporary floor or rack load before you fill. Metric plumbing often lists DN or millimetre inside diameter; US plumbing often lists inches—set diameter_unit accordingly and keep length_unit consistent with your drawing scale. Failed tasks that return invalid_input do not consume prepaid balance, which keeps exploratory scripts cheap when operators type impossible sizes while learning the contract.

Developers and teachers generate known-good filled-pipe water weight cases plus deliberate non-positive dimension rejections for unit tests and training.
