Gutter hanger calculator
A 40-foot gutter run with hangers every 2 feet needs 21 hangers: 20 spaces plus one, so both ends are held. Enter run length and spacing in the same unit, add extras for corners or snow zones, and order before you climb the ladder. Free in your browser.

A gutter hanger calculator turns the total linear length of a gutter run and the manufacturer or code recommended centre-to-centre spacing into the integer count of hangers or brackets you should order before you climb the ladder.
How gutter hangers are counted from length and spacing
A straight gutter run of positive length is supported by hangers or brackets placed at a target centre-to-centre spacing along the fascia. The number of intervals between hangers is the ceiling of gutter length divided by hanger spacing, so a run that is not an exact multiple of the spacing still gets enough segments to cover the full length.
Base hangers equal intervals plus one because every interval has two ends and adjacent intervals share a hanger: a single interval needs two hangers, two intervals need three hangers, and so on. That is the classic contractor rule hangers equals length divided by spacing plus one, with the ceiling applied when the division is not exact so the far end of the run is never left without a bracket.
Optional extra hangers are added after the base grid for inside and outside mitres, expansion joints on long runs, heavy ice or snow zones, or a small spare pack; the default is zero when you omit the field so the geometric take-off stays transparent. Length and spacing must use the same length unit—feet with feet, metres with metres—because the calculator never converts units and only needs the dimensionless ratio. Length must also be positive; a zero-length run is not a gutter.
The response does not size fascia screws, choose hidden-hanger versus spike-and-ferrule hardware, or design wind uplift—model those after you have the integer count.
What you can do with it
Residential re-gutter material list
Homeowners enter total eave gutter length and manufacturer hanger spacing to get hangers or brackets needed before ordering hardware.
FAQ
How many gutter hangers do I need?
Example: length 40 and spacing 2 → 20 intervals and 21 hangers.
What hanger spacing should I use?
Follow the hanger manufacturer and local climate. Many residential systems use about 24 inches (2 ft) or 600 mm centre-to-centre; some allow 30–36 inches in light-load regions.
What if hanger spacing is zero or negative?
Hanger spacing must be strictly positive; zero or negative spacing cannot define a hanger grid.
Does this include corners and downspouts?
The base count is one straight run only.
Is the gutter hanger calculator free?
The browser tool is free and runs locally.

Technical notes
Zero or negative spacing is rejected with a clear invalid_input error instead of inventing infinite hangers, and non-positive length is rejected the same way.
How gutter hangers are counted from length and spacing
Spacing must be strictly positive: zero spacing would imply infinitely many hangers, and negative spacing has no physical meaning on a line, so both cases return invalid_input. On success the tool echoes rounded length and spacing, publishes intervals, hangers_base, hangers_needed, extra_hangers, formula, message, and steps so you can audit the arithmetic by hand or in automated tests.
How to call the API and what comes back
Prefer sending numbers rather than pre-formatted strings when you control the client; when you must send strings, avoid unit suffixes or thousand separators that would fail the finite-number pattern. Typical examples: forty feet of gutter at two-foot spacing yields twenty-one hangers; thirty metres at zero point six metres yields fifty-one hangers on the base grid before any extras. Send a JSON body with two required fields: gutter_length (aliases length, L, run, run_length, gutter, total_length) and hanger_spacing (aliases spacing, space, gap, S, interval, bracket_spacing). Optionally send extra_hangers (aliases extras, spare, spares, extra, additional); when omitted it defaults to zero. Length and spacing must be finite positive numbers within the published absolute range so the ratio and counts remain finite in IEEE double precision on the Worker and in the browser. extra_hangers when provided must be a non-negative integer up to the published maximum; string forms of whole numbers are accepted when they match a strict finite numeric pattern, but fractional extras are rejected. On success the response sets intervals to the bay count between hangers, hangers_base to intervals plus one, hangers_needed to hangers_base plus extra_hangers, formula to the published expression, message to a short English summary, and steps to an ordered substitution log. Failed validation—missing fields, non-finite numbers, zero or negative spacing, non-positive length, invalid extra_hangers, or values outside absolute limits—returns invalid_input and is never charged. Pricing is a flat $0.002 per successful request with unit item.
Practical tips, limits, and related searches
If the last interval would be awkwardly short, either slightly tighten spacing so length divides more evenly or accept the ceiling rule and place the final hanger near the end cap; this calculator always covers the full length with ceil. Keep dimensions inside the published absolute range so counts cannot overflow into non-finite results the solver must reject. Prefer this capability when you already know the run length and target spacing and only need an integer material count; if your source is a full perimeter, call once per straight side and adjust extras for corners. Round-trip checks are easy: recompute ceil of length over spacing by hand, add one for the far end, add extras, and confirm the published integers match. Measure each straight eave run separately and sum hangers only after you have counted corners carefully—shared mitre points may need an extra bracket that the straight-run formula does not invent for you, which is why extra_hangers exists. Choose spacing from the hanger manufacturer sheet or local practice: twenty-four inches is common for many residential K-style systems, while some aluminum products allow thirty or thirty-six inches in light snow regions; always keep length and spacing in the same unit before calling the API. When teaching or writing tests, pair an exact multiple (length forty, spacing two → twenty-one hangers) with a non-exact case that exercises the ceiling, and include a deliberate zero or negative spacing to prove the invalid_input path. This landing targets people searching for a gutter hanger calculator, how many hangers for gutters, gutter bracket spacing count, or gutter hangers material list online; it is not a rainwater runoff tool, not a downspout sizing calculator, not a fascia board estimator, and not a multi-building roof survey that places hangers at GPS coordinates. Failed tasks that return invalid_input do not consume prepaid balance, which keeps exploratory scripts cheap when you deliberately send zero spacing to verify error handling.
