Period to frequency calculator

A period of 0.02 seconds is a frequency of 50 Hz, and the reverse works the same way. Enter either the period or the frequency of any repeating signal and get the other, plus the angular frequency in radians per second. Free in your browser.

Period and frequency are reciprocal descriptions of the same repeating motion. If a wave or oscillator completes one full cycle every T seconds, its frequency is f equals one over T hertz; if you know the frequency in cycles per second, the period is simply the reciprocal again. This calculator accepts exactly one known quantity—period in seconds or frequency in hertz—and returns the other, plus the angular frequency omega equals two pi f in radians per second that control theory and AC circuit formulas often need. Zero input is rejected with a clear validation error because dividing by zero is not a physical answer. Negative values round-trip through the same reciprocal rule so signed contexts stay consistent, while ordinary lab work almost always uses positive magnitudes. When you later need wavelength from wave speed, Doppler shifts, or spectral analysis, treat those as separate landings rather than overloading this elementary T to f converter.

How period and frequency mirror each other

Any strictly periodic signal repeats after a fixed time interval called the period T, measured in seconds when using SI base units. Frequency f counts how many of those cycles fit into one second, so the unit is the hertz, equal to one cycle per second. The two quantities are exact reciprocals: f equals one over T, and T equals one over f.

That identity is model-independent—it does not assume a sine wave, a circular orbit, or small angles; it only assumes that a single positive time scale fully describes the repetition. Many engineering formulas prefer angular frequency omega equals two pi f, which measures how many radians of phase advance per second for a pure sinusoid written as cos of omega t. This capability computes all three linked numbers from whichever scalar you already know.

What you send and what you get back

Send either period as a finite non-zero number in seconds, or frequency as a finite non-zero number in hertz. Omitting both fields also fails, as does NaN, Infinity, empty strings, or a literal zero. Classic checks include period zero point zero two seconds giving fifty hertz, frequency fifty hertz giving period zero point zero two seconds, and the one-second period that yields one hertz.

Wire the free browser form for classroom demos and quick sanity checks, then call the identical contract from scripts when you need bulk conversion of timing tables or firmware tick rates. If you need wavelength lambda equals v over f you must supply wave speed separately in another tool; this landing deliberately stays on pure period-frequency reciprocity so the SEO intent stays sharp and the contract stays tiny.

Where period-frequency conversion shows up in real work

Secondary-school and introductory college physics constantly assign table drills that convert pendulum periods, AC mains frequencies, musical pitch frequencies, and radio carrier periods into the complementary unit; a single trusted oracle speeds grading and demo setup. Embedded firmware authors convert timer overflow periods into event frequencies and back when configuring PWM, UART baud-related clocks, or sampling loops, and they need honest rejection of zero rather than silent Infinity.

Audio engineers and synthesizer designers map oscillator periods in samples or seconds into hertz labels for UI, while control-system designers jump from closed-loop oscillation period estimates to radian-frequency margins. Laboratory notebooks recording oscilloscope cursors often show time between peaks; converting that delta-t to frequency is the first step before comparing to a nominal line frequency or clock crystal.

If you later need simple-pendulum length from period and gravity, Doppler frequency shifts, Fourier peak extraction, or wavelength from wave speed, treat those as separate search intents and landings rather than overloading this elementary period to frequency calculator page.

Homework and lab tables

Convert measured oscillation periods to hertz (and back) for physics worksheets so teachers and students share one ground-truth reciprocal.

Firmware timers and PWM

Map timer tick periods to event frequencies when configuring microcontrollers, rejecting zero divisors instead of producing Infinity.

Audio and AC line checks

Turn oscilloscope peak-to-peak times into frequency labels for mains, clocks, and musical pitches, with ω = 2πf included for circuit formulas.

What formula does this period to frequency calculator use?

Angular frequency is ω = 2πf in radians per second.

What units should I use?

Period in seconds (s) and frequency in hertz (Hz). Angular frequency is returned in rad/s. Convert prefixes (ms, kHz) yourself before calling.

What does it cost?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

What is angular frequency and how is it worked out?

It is two pi times the frequency, measured in radians per second, and it tells how fast the phase of a sine wave advances. A 50 Hz signal has an angular frequency of 314.159265359 radians per second, the value AC circuit formulas expect.

Does the conversion only work for sine waves?

No. Frequency is one over the period for any signal that repeats at a fixed interval, whether it is a sine wave, a pulse train, an orbit or a pendulum swing. Only the angular frequency is tied to the sine-wave picture.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

POSThttps://api.kit.forhosting.com/phys/period-frequency

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

How period and frequency relate (f = 1/T)

Because the map is a single division, the result is deterministic floating-point arithmetic with no random seeds, no wall-clock timestamps, no network calls, and no model drift: identical input always yields identical JSON. The implementation still validates carefully: the payload must be an object, exactly one of period or frequency must be present, the value must be finite, and its absolute magnitude must not collapse to zero under a small epsilon threshold, since near-zero denominators would explode into non-physical infinities.

What you send and what you get back

Field aliases are accepted: T, t, and period_s for period; f, freq, and hz for frequency. Do not send both fields in the same request—if both are present the call fails with invalid_input so you cannot accidentally compute from the wrong side when the pair is inconsistent. On success the response includes mode set to period_to_frequency or frequency_to_period, cleaned period and frequency, angular_frequency equal to two pi times frequency, unit labels period_unit s, frequency_unit Hz, and angular_frequency_unit rad/s, plus formula and relation strings for worksheets. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.

Where period-frequency conversion shows up in real work

Because this capability is a pure parse engine, API pricing is the published base of $0.002 per successful item and failed validation does not consume balance.

What happens if period or frequency is zero?

The request fails with invalid_input. Division by zero is undefined; the API never returns Infinity for a zero reciprocal.

Can I send both period and frequency?

No. Provide exactly one known quantity. Sending both (or neither) returns invalid_input so inconsistent pairs cannot silently win.
