Debt snowball vs avalanche order

See which debt comes next under both methods at once: for a 400 store card at 22.9%, a 3200 card at 18.5% and a 1500 loan at 11%, snowball goes store card, loan, card, while avalanche goes store card, card, loan. Free in your browser.

Choosing which debt to attack first is one of the most searched personal-finance decisions online. The snowball method ranks accounts by the smallest remaining balance so early wins build motivation; the avalanche method ranks by the highest annual interest rate so more of each payment goes to costly interest. This capability accepts a list of debts with balances and rates, returns both ordered sequences side by side, and flags when the two methods disagree. Use it when you need a deterministic comparison of payoff priority, not a full amortization table.

Snowball vs avalanche: what each order means

The debt snowball method sorts obligations by outstanding balance from smallest to largest. After minimum payments are covered everywhere, extra cash targets the first rank until that balance is gone, then rolls to the next. Behavioural finance research and popular coaching programs favour this sequence because clearing a whole account quickly creates visible progress and reduces the number of open bills.

The debt avalanche method instead sorts by annual percentage rate from highest to lowest, so the most expensive interest is attacked first while smaller, cheaper debts wait their turn. Over a long multi-year payoff both methods eventually clear every balance if the same extra payment is applied, but avalanche usually minimises total interest paid and snowball often maximises early psychological wins. When two debts share the same balance, snowball breaks ties by higher rate then by original list position.

When two debts share the same rate, avalanche breaks ties by smaller balance then original index.

Compare snowball and avalanche on a landing page

Let visitors paste card and loan balances with APRs and show both payoff orders so they can pick a method with eyes open.

Coaching and counselling intake

Turn a client’s account list into stable snowball and avalanche ranks for session notes and plan templates.

Budgeting apps and spreadsheet add-ons

Post stored balances and rates once to fill next-to-pay queues under either philosophy without reimplementing sort rules.

How does the debt snowball method order debts?

Snowball sorts by smallest balance first. Ties break by higher rate, then by original list position. Send debts with balance and rate (percent APR).

How does the avalanche method differ?

Avalanche sorts by highest annual interest rate first. Ties break by smaller balance, then original index. Both orders are returned in one response for comparison.

Does this calculate total interest or a payoff date?

No. It only returns payoff priority ranks under snowball and avalanche. Use a separate amortization tool if you need schedules or interest totals.

How do I know if snowball and avalanche disagree for my debts?

The result flags it whenever the two sequences differ. In the example both start with the 400 store card, but snowball takes the 1500 loan next while avalanche takes the 3200 card at the higher rate.

Which method should I choose, snowball or avalanche?

The tool does not decide for you; it shows both orders from the same list. Avalanche usually keeps total interest lower, while snowball often clears whole accounts sooner, which many people find motivating.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Snowball vs avalanche: what each order means

This endpoint does not decide which philosophy is better for a given person; it only materialises both ranks from the same input so a client can show a comparison table, a coach can discuss trade-offs, or an automation can default to one sequence while logging the other.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Each object must include balance (finite number greater than or equal to zero, currency units) and rate (finite number greater than or equal to zero, annual interest as a percent such as 19.9 for 19.9 percent APR). Ranks are one-based. Balances are rounded to two decimal places and rates to four for stable cross-runtime goldens. The capability never invents minimum payments, does not compound interest, and does not return a month-by-month schedule—those belong to separate amortization tools. Pair the order with your own payment engine if you need dollar savings estimates; start here when the product question is simply which account is next under each method. POST a JSON body with a single required field debts: a non-empty array of objects. Aliases list, items, and accounts are accepted for the array. At most one hundred debts are allowed per call. An empty array, a missing debts field, a non-array value, or a debt object lacking balance or rate fails with invalid_input and is not billed. On success the body includes debt_count; total_balance as the sum of balances rounded to two decimals; snowball_order and avalanche_order as arrays of ranked records each carrying rank, name, balance, rate, and original_index; methods_differ as a boolean that is true when the sequences of original_index values differ; and a short summary string stating whether the methods agree.

Where a snowball and avalanche order API earns its keep

Spreadsheet add-ons and budgeting apps often already store card balances and APRs; posting that list once yields both priority queues for a compare-and-choose screen. Failed validation does not consume balance. Keep the list under one hundred debts, pin the ranked arrays in tests, and you get reproducible payoff priority for widgets, LMS modules, and edge workers without standing up a full financial-planning stack of your own. Coaching platforms and credit-counselling intake forms can call the same pure module from the browser for free previews and from the API for stored plans, guaranteeing that the ranks a client saw on the landing page match the ranks stored after signup. Content teams can seed default examples that illustrate a case where methods_differ is true—small high-rate store cards versus large lower-rate loans—so readers see why order matters before they paste their own numbers.

What if my debts list is empty?

The task fails with invalid_input. At least one debt with balance and rate is required; empty success payloads are never returned.

What does the debt snowball order calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
