Monthly savings for goal calculator
Work backward from a goal: to reach 25,000 in 36 months with 5,000 already saved at 4.5% a year, see the level monthly deposit you need, plus your total contributions and the interest that gets you there. Free in your browser.

This monthly savings for goal calculator works backward from the balance you want and the time you have. Enter the target amount, money already saved, whole months until the deadline, and a nominal annual interest rate. It compounds the existing balance monthly and treats each new saving deposit as arriving at the end of the month, then returns the level monthly amount needed. You also receive projected contributions, estimated interest, and the exact formula convention, making the result useful for budgets, automated planning tools, and transparent comparisons between deadlines or rates.
Turn a deadline and target into a monthly action
A goal becomes easier to manage when it is expressed as a repeatable monthly amount. This calculator starts with the future balance you need, rather than asking you to guess a contribution and wait to see where it leads. It first projects your current savings forward through every month before the deadline.
It then measures the shortfall that remains and spreads that shortfall across a stream of equal end-of-month deposits, allowing each earlier deposit more time to earn interest than each later one. That is the future-value-of-an-annuity approach commonly used for regular savings plans. For example, a home repair fund needed in three years, a tuition payment due in five years, or a cash reserve wanted in eighteen months can all be reduced to the same four inputs.
The output is a planning estimate, not a promise from a bank: actual account rates can change, interest may be credited on a different schedule, taxes and fees can reduce growth, and skipped or late deposits change the result. Still, the level monthly figure gives you a clear starting commitment and lets you see immediately whether the deadline is realistic for your budget.
How interest and deposit timing are handled
The annual interest input is a nominal percentage divided by twelve to obtain the monthly rate, and growth is compounded once per month. The current balance earns that monthly rate for the full number of months. Regular contributions are assumed to arrive at the end of each month, so the first new deposit earns interest for one fewer month than the current balance and the final deposit earns no interest before the stated deadline.
This conservative convention is called an ordinary annuity. If your deposits occur at the beginning of each month, an annuity-due model would produce a slightly lower required payment; you should not silently substitute that timing when comparing results. When the annual rate is zero, the calculator uses a direct division branch: target minus current savings, divided by the number of months.
This avoids an undefined zero-over-zero annuity expression and preserves an exact, understandable result. If the existing balance alone is projected to meet or exceed the target, the required monthly saving is zero. Negative rates are intentionally unsupported, and the calculator does not model variable rates, inflation, investment volatility, taxes, account fees, or irregular deposits.
Read the result and test alternative plans
Keep all money inputs consistent: if the target is in dollars, the current balance must also be in dollars, not cents or another currency. The response also shows what the existing savings could become by the deadline, the sum of all planned contributions, and estimated interest earned across the existing balance and contribution stream. Small differences can appear if you compare the result with a financial institution that rounds every monthly credit to cents, because this calculator carries precision through the calculation and rounds only the reported fields.
Use scenarios to make the answer actionable. Shorten the deadline to measure the cost of urgency, extend it to see how time reduces the deposit, or compare a zero-rate case with a realistic savings-account rate. Do not select an optimistic investment return merely to force the monthly amount into budget; higher expected returns generally bring uncertainty that this deterministic calculator cannot represent.
What you can do with it
Build an emergency fund
Find the monthly transfer needed to reach a chosen cash reserve by a specific month while including savings-account interest.
Plan a major purchase
Translate a future vehicle, renovation, education, or travel budget into equal monthly deposits after accounting for money already saved.
Power a budgeting workflow
Return deterministic monthly requirements and supporting totals inside a planning app, spreadsheet automation, or scenario comparison service.
FAQ
What deposit timing does the calculator assume?
It assumes one equal deposit at the end of every month. This is an ordinary-annuity convention.
How is the annual interest rate applied?
The nominal annual percentage is divided by 12, then that monthly rate is compounded for the number of whole months entered.
What happens when the interest rate is zero?
The remaining amount after current savings is divided evenly by the number of months, with no interest added.
Why can the required monthly saving be zero?
If the current balance, after projected interest, already reaches the target by the deadline, no additional monthly deposit is required under this model.
Why might my real savings fall short of the plan?
The result is a planning estimate, not a bank's promise. Account rates can change, interest may be credited on another schedule, taxes and fees reduce growth, and a skipped or late deposit changes the outcome.

Technical notes
Read the result and test alternative plans
The main result is required_monthly_saving, expressed in the same currency unit used for the target and current balance. For an API call, provide finite plain numbers without currency symbols or thousands separators. Successful requests cost $0.002; validation failures reject missing, negative, non-finite, out-of-range, or fractional-month inputs as invalid_input.
Technical questions
What does an API calculation cost?
Each successful API request costs $0.002. The browser calculator is free, and invalid inputs are rejected without producing a calculation.
