Dream come true calculator

Aim for 50,000 in 5 years with 10,000 saved, 500 a month and an 8% yearly return, and you reach 51,636.89, a surplus of 1,636.89. Enter your goal, savings, monthly amount, return and years to see whether the plan gets there. Free in your browser.

A dream-come-true plan is a goal amount, a date, the cash already saved, the cash still to be added, and a return you are willing to assume. This calculator compounds current savings at a monthly rate taken from the annual return, adds the future value of the monthly contributions over the same horizon, and compares that projected balance with the target. When the projection is larger than the dream, the difference is a surplus. When it is smaller, the difference is a shortfall you still have to close with more saving, more time, or a different assumed return. It does not pick investment products, convert currencies, or guess inflation.

What a dream come true plan actually computes

Start with the goal as a number, not a slogan: a down payment, a sabbatical fund, a wedding, a studio, a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Then pin four other numbers that actually move the answer. Current savings is the lump sum already sitting toward the dream.

Monthly contribution is the end-of-month amount you will keep adding. Annual return is the expected nominal growth as a percent, not a decimal: eight means eight percent a year. Years is the horizon until the target date.

Internally the dream come true calculator uses monthly compounding because that is how household savings and investment illustrations are usually posted. The monthly rate i is the annual percent divided by one hundred and then by twelve. The number of months n is twelve times the years.

Current savings grows as P times (one plus i) to the n. Monthly contributions grow as an ordinary annuity: PMT times ((one plus i) to the n minus one) divided by i, or simply PMT times n when the return is zero so the formula does not divide by zero. The projected value is the sum of those two future values.

Surplus is the projected value minus the goal when that difference is positive. Shortfall is the goal minus the projected value when the difference is negative. An exact match after rounding reports both as zero and marks the plan funded.

This is not a months-to-goal tool that ignores investment growth, and it is not a lump-sum compound-interest page that never mentions a dream amount. The search intent is specifically whether the savings-and-growth plan funds the dream by the date you named.

House deposit by a moving date

Project whether current savings plus a planned monthly debit, grown at an assumed annual return, covers the down-payment target before you need the keys.

Wedding, sabbatical, or once-in-a-lifetime trip

Name the cost and the date, then read the shortfall or surplus instead of hoping the balances will line up in time.

How is the shortfall or surplus calculated?

When the return is zero, contributions are simply PMT × n. Surplus is max(0, projected − goal). Shortfall is max(0, goal − projected).

What happens if the target amount or current savings is negative?

Zero is allowed; it means a free goal or a plan that starts from nothing.

Is the annual return a percent or a decimal?

A percent. Send 8 for eight percent per year. Sending 0.08 would be treated as eight hundredths of a percent, not eight percent.

Are monthly contributions added at the start or the end of each month?

At the end of each month (ordinary annuity). Beginning-of-month (annuity due) deposits are a different identity and are not mixed into this contract.

What if I don't want to assume any investment return?

Enter a return of 0. The plan then counts pure saving: what you already have plus the monthly deposits times the number of months, with no growth, which is a cautious way to test the goal.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Money inputs sit between zero and one trillion. The annual return must stay between zero and one hundred percent so the compounding factor stays finite. Example: fifty thousand target, ten thousand current, five hundred a month, eight percent, and five years produces a modest surplus. POST a JSON object with five finite numbers. target_amount is the dream in currency units; aliases goal, dream_amount, and amount are accepted so a spreadsheet can keep a familiar column name. current_savings is the balance already set aside; aliases savings, current, and principal map to the same field. Both of those fields must be non-negative: a negative target amount or a negative current savings value is rejected with invalid_input naming the field, and that failure is not billed. That is the contracted error. monthly_contribution is the end-of-month deposit and may be zero if you are only growing what you already have; aliases monthly, contribution, deposit, and pmt are accepted, and a negative contribution is rejected. annual_return is the nominal annual percent; aliases rate, return_rate, and annual_rate are accepted. A zero return models pure saving without growth. years is the horizon and may be fractional so that two and a half years is thirty months; aliases t, time, and horizon are accepted. On success the body echoes the inputs, reports months and the monthly rate, and returns future_savings, future_contributions, projected_value, shortfall, surplus, funded, status, and a formula string. When the goal is positive it also returns funded_percent. Failed validation does not consume prepaid balance. Successful API calls use the published $0.002 base price.

Where a dream come true calculator earns its keep

Households use this page when a house deposit, a wedding, a career break, or a big purchase has both a date and a price and they need to know whether the current plan is enough. Coaches and educators need a deterministic oracle that rejects a negative goal instead of painting a green chart over a typing error. Product teams embed the same five-field contract in onboarding so a user who types a target, a balance, a monthly debit, a return, and a horizon sees the identical shortfall or surplus that automated tests will later assert. Keep requests small. When you later need inflation, taxes, employer matches, or irregular deposits, treat those as a different identity rather than stretching this five-field contract past what it honestly answers. Pin rounded projected_value, shortfall, and surplus in tests.
