Leaf area index calculator
Compare a lawn, a wheat field and a forest on one scale: 6 m² of leaf over 2 m² of ground is a leaf area index of 3, a closed canopy. Scanner, planimeter or field-map units are converted for you. Free in your browser.

Leaf area index, or LAI, is the total one-sided green leaf area of a canopy divided by the ground area that foliage occupies. Ecologists, agronomists, and remote-sensing analysts use that dimensionless ratio to compare a grassland, a wheat field, and a closed forest on the same scale: an LAI of one means one square metre of leaf per square metre of ground, while an LAI of four means the canopy stacks the equivalent of four leaf layers over the plot. This leaf area index calculator converts the leaf and ground measurements you already have — square millimetres from a scanner, square centimetres from a planimeter, hectares from a field map, or acres from a farm record — into square metres, then applies Watson's one-sided definition LAI equals A_leaf over A_ground. It classifies the result as bare, sparse, open, closed, or dense so a lab notebook can sit next to a satellite product without mixing LAI with canopy cover.
What leaf area index means and how LAI is computed
Leaf area index is Watson's 1947 ratio of the total one-sided area of green leaves to the ground area those leaves occupy. One-sided means you count the projected area of each lamina once, not both faces of a bifacial leaf and not the wrinkled surface that a three-dimensional scan might report; that is the convention used by crop models, forest inventories, and most satellite LAI products.
Because both the numerator and the denominator are areas, the quotient is dimensionless: an LAI of 1.0 is one square metre of leaf per square metre of ground, whether you measured the plot in square centimetres or in acres. This calculator converts each measurement into square metres with exact SI factors and the international-foot definitions of the square inch, square foot, square yard, and acre, then divides. A zero leaf area on a positive plot is a legitimate bare canopy and returns LAI equal to zero.
Typical teaching bands put LAI below one in a sparse or seedling stand, from one up to three in an open crop or woodland, from three up to six in a closed canopy, and six and above in a dense multilayer forest. Those labels are orientation, not a species key: a maize field at tasseling and a temperate hardwood stand can share an LAI of four.
The identity does not estimate LAI from a photograph, a ceptometer gap fraction, or an NDVI scene; it evaluates the definition from two areas you already measured, which is exactly the check a destructive sample or an allometric leaf-area total needs before anyone compares it with an optical product.
Where a leaf area index calculator earns its keep
Teaching labs use a leaf area index calculator so students stop confusing LAI with canopy cover and with specific leaf area. Cover is a fraction of ground hidden by foliage and cannot exceed one; LAI counts stacked layers and routinely exceeds one. Specific leaf area is leaf area per unit dry mass, a tissue trait, not a canopy stack.
A harvested-leaf practical that scans laminas in square centimetres and tapes a quadrat in square metres needs the mixed-unit path rather than a spreadsheet that silently assumes both columns are already in the same unit. Crop consultants convert destructive samples from a known harvest frame into LAI before they compare a handheld optical reading or a satellite pixel. Forest inventory crews do the same with allometric leaf-area estimates over a fixed plot so the field book and the remote-sensing scene share one number.
Content sites that rank for leaf area index calculator should not cannibalize a leaf-area-only unit converter or an NDVI-to-LAI model: those queries want a unit change or a remote-sensing transfer function, not Watson's ratio of one-sided leaf area to ground area. Failed validation does not consume balance. Pin lai and the converted square-metre fields in tests, keep areas inside the declared ceilings, and you get the same 3.0 for six over two in a lecture notebook, an LMS plugin, and a harvest script.
What you can do with it
Destructive crop sample to LAI
Scan harvested leaves in square centimetres, enter the quadrat in square metres, and read LAI plus a closed or open canopy class for the field book.
Forest plot allometry check
Convert an allometric one-sided leaf-area total over a fixed plot into dimensionless LAI before comparing the stand with an optical or satellite product.
Classroom LAI versus cover
Give students six square metres of leaf over two square metres of ground and show that LAI is 3, which canopy cover as a 0–1 fraction cannot express.
FAQ
How is leaf area index calculated?
LAI is total one-sided leaf area divided by the ground area that foliage covers.
What units can I use for leaf and ground area?
Each side accepts mm2, cm2, dm2, m2, are, ha, km2, in2, ft2, yd2, or acre. Units may differ; both are converted to square metres before dividing. The default for either field is m2.
Is leaf area index the same as canopy cover?
No. Canopy cover is the fraction of ground hidden by foliage and cannot exceed 1. LAI counts stacked leaf layers and is often 3–6 in a closed stand. This calculator returns LAI, not cover.
Why one-sided leaf area?
Watson's definition counts each lamina once (the projected one-sided area), which is the convention in crop models, forest inventory, and most satellite LAI products.
What does a leaf area index of 3 mean?
It means 3 square metres of one-sided leaf above every square metre of ground, which the calculator classes as a closed canopy. An index of 1 is one layer of leaves; an index of 4 stacks the equivalent of four layers.

Technical notes
What leaf area index means and how LAI is computed
A zero or negative ground area is not a plot, so the request is rejected rather than dividing by zero.
Input contract, units, response shape, and error behaviour
Mixed units are the point of the converter: sixty thousand square centimetres of harvested leaves over a two-square-metre quadrat become six square metres over two square metres, so LAI is three. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers and optional units. leaf_area is the total one-sided leaf area in leaf_area_unit, with aliases total_leaf_area, foliage_area, and a_leaf. It must be non-negative; a negative leaf area is rejected with invalid_input that names the field. ground_area is the plot or projected canopy footprint in ground_area_unit, with aliases plot_area, canopy_area, and a_ground. It must be strictly positive, because LAI divides by that area. leaf_area_unit and ground_area_unit default to m2 and must be one of mm2, cm2, dm2, m2, are, ha, km2, in2, ft2, yd2, or acre. Optional precision, with aliases decimals and dp, is an integer from 0 to 12 and defaults to 6; it only affects how numbers are rounded in the response. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or as a decimal or scientific string. Missing required fields, empty strings, non-finite values, unknown units, and converted areas above the declared ceiling fail with invalid_input. Those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes the inputs, returns leaf_area_m2 and ground_area_m2 after conversion, returns lai as the dimensionless ratio, labels canopy_class as bare, sparse, open, closed, or dense, sets one_sided to true so callers see Watson's convention, and fills formula plus formula_applied so a notebook can print the substitution next to the answer. Example: leaf_area 6 and ground_area 2 in square metres yield lai 3 and canopy_class closed.
