Dissertation chapter word split

Turn one thesis word limit into four chapter targets: 80,000 words at 15, 20, 35 and 30 percent become 12,000, 16,000, 28,000 and 24,000 words for introduction, methods, results and discussion. Free in your browser.

Doctoral and master's candidates are almost always given a total word budget, not four separate chapter limits. Supervisors still expect an introduction, a methods chapter, a results chapter, and a discussion to stay in proportion so the thesis does not collapse into a long literature dump or an undersized findings section. This dissertation chapter word-split calculator takes that single integer budget and four non-negative percentages that must add to one hundred, then returns an integer target for each IMRaD chapter. Remainders after flooring are awarded by the largest-remainder (Hamilton) method so the four targets always sum back to the original budget.

How a word budget becomes four integer chapter targets

A dissertation word budget is a single integer that must be turned into four integer chapter targets. Printing those exact values as-is would usually fail to sum back to the budget, because a word is an indivisible unit. The implementation therefore applies the largest-remainder method, also called Hamilton apportionment.

Each exact target is floored to a whole number of words; the leftover words equal the original budget minus the sum of those floors, which is always a small integer between zero and three inclusive when four chapters are in play. Those leftover words are given, one at a time, to the chapters with the largest fractional parts, breaking any exact tie by the fixed order introduction, methods, results, discussion. A chapter whose percentage is zero receives zero words.

Changing a percentage and re-running reallocates the same budget without rewriting the four chapter names. Equal percentages of twenty-five produce as even a split as an integer budget allows; a classic fifteen / twenty / thirty-five / thirty split on eighty thousand words yields twelve thousand, sixteen thousand, twenty-eight thousand, and twenty-four thousand respectively.

Where a chapter word-split calculator earns its keep

Graduate writing centres use a dissertation chapter word-split calculator so every advisee starts from the same numeric plan: one university-wide budget, four agreed percentages, four integer targets that sum. Supervision platforms store the four percentages as a template and re-run when a faculty board changes the institutional maximum, so mid-candidature students receive a revised target for methods and results instead of a vague instruction to cut ten percent.

Editors checking a submitted thesis against a house style can compare actual chapter counts with the planned split and flag an introduction that has eaten the discussion.

Candidature planning from a single word budget

Turn an 80,000-word PhD limit into integer targets for introduction, methods, results, and discussion before the first chapter draft.

Graduate-school templates and handbooks

Keep a faculty-wide IMRaD percentage mix and re-run whenever the institutional word maximum changes, so every cohort sees the same split.

Supervision and submission checks

Compare a submitted chapter's actual count against the planned target and flag an introduction that has consumed the discussion budget.

How are leftover words assigned when percentages do not divide evenly?

Any leftover words go to the chapters with the largest fractional parts (Hamilton / largest-remainder). Ties break in the order introduction, methods, results, discussion. The four integer targets always sum to the original budget.

Can one chapter have a percentage of zero?

Yes. A zero-percent chapter stays in the response with zero words so a template can keep the four IMRaD names. The other three percentages must still sum to 100.

What happens if my percentages do not add up to 100?

The split is refused. The four percentages must total exactly 100, each between 0 and 100, so adjust one chapter until the sum is right and the budget is fully shared out.

How large a word budget can I split?

Any whole number of words from 1 to 2,000,000. Fractions of a word are not accepted, because every chapter target has to be a whole number of words.

How do I update the targets when my word limit changes?

Enter the new limit with the same four percentages and the tool reallocates it. You get revised targets for every chapter instead of a vague instruction to cut a share of the text.

How a word budget becomes four integer chapter targets

This calculator treats the four IMRaD percentages as a partition of one hundred: introduction_percent, methods_percent, results_percent, and discussion_percent. The exact real-valued target for chapter i is total_words times percent_i divided by one hundred. The result is a unique, deterministic assignment of integers that always sums to total_words.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Each must be a finite number between zero and one hundred inclusive, and the four values must sum to one hundred. A worked remainder case is ten thousand and one words at fifteen / twenty / thirty-five / thirty, which floors to ten thousand and then awards the single leftover word to results, the largest fractional part. POST a JSON body with five required fields. The field total_words is a finite positive integer from one to two million inclusive; aliases words, word_count, budget, and total are accepted. The four percentage fields are introduction_percent, methods_percent, results_percent, and discussion_percent. Aliases include intro_percent, methods_pct, findings_percent, and discussion_pct. Missing fields, non-finite values, a non-integer or non-positive budget, a budget above the published maximum, a percentage outside zero to one hundred, and a percent sum that is not one hundred all fail with invalid_input and are not billed. On success the body echoes total_words and the four percentages, reports percent_sum as one hundred, and returns introduction_words, methods_words, results_words, and discussion_words as integers. A chapters array lists each row with name, percent, share_ratio, words_exact, and words so a dashboard can chart the same split without recomputing. allocated_words repeats the sum of the four integer targets; remainder_words is how many leftover words the Hamilton pass distributed. method is largest_remainder and formula restates the exact product plus leftover award. The browser tool is free; successful API calls use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per item.

Where a chapter word-split calculator earns its keep

Automation scripts that already hold a word budget from a progress form call the same endpoint instead of hard-coding rounding that drifts between Python and a spreadsheet.

Must the four percentages add up to 100?

Yes. introduction_percent, methods_percent, results_percent, and discussion_percent must each lie between 0 and 100 and must sum to 100. A sum of 90 or 110 fails with invalid_input and is not billed.

What if the total word budget is zero or a fraction?

The task fails with invalid_input. total_words must be a positive integer from 1 to 2,000,000. Zero, negative, and non-integer budgets are rejected.

What does the dissertation chapter word-split calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
