NaNoWriMo daily word count

50,000 words in 30 days means 1,667 words a day, rounded up so that writing the quota every day really finishes the draft. Enter your goal, the days already gone and your word count, and get the quota for the days that remain. Free in your browser.

National Novel Writing Month, known worldwide as NaNoWriMo, challenges writers to complete a novel draft in thirty consecutive calendar days, classically fifty thousand words across November. The daily quota is not a slogan copied from a flyer: it is remaining words divided by remaining days, and it changes every time you log a writing session or skip one. This NaNoWriMo daily word-count calculator accepts your target words, how many challenge days have already elapsed, and how many words you have already written, then returns the words per day still required so the draft hits the goal before the month closes.

Where the daily quota comes from

NaNoWriMo asks for a novel draft in 30 consecutive days, classically 50,000 words written in November. The daily target is not a fixed slogan: it is the words you still need divided by the days you still have. At the start, with nothing written, that works out to 1,667 words a day once it is rounded up to a whole word, so that writing the quota every single day really does finish the draft. Every time you log a session or skip a day, both numbers change, and so does tomorrow's quota.

Catching up without fooling yourself

A late start or a missed weekend raises the quota for every day that remains. After ten days with twelve thousand words on the page, you still need thirty-eight thousand words in twenty days, exactly one thousand nine hundred a day. Two mistakes are common. One is planning as if November had 31 days; the challenge calendar has 30, so that extra day does not exist. The other is rounding the quota down, which leaves you a few words short at the end. Once your words reach the goal, the quota simply drops to zero.

Classroom novel-in-a-month units

Let students who start late see how remaining days raise the daily quota, so the arithmetic of catching up is visible before the draft is due.

Habit apps and personal word trackers

Recompute tomorrow's quota after every session without embedding 30-day calendar math that drifts when November is treated as 31 days.

What if I have already hit my word goal?

You do not need a further daily quota.

How many words a day do I need to write for NaNoWriMo?

With the classic goal of 50,000 words over 30 days, you need 1,667 words a day. The exact figure is slightly lower, but it is rounded up to a whole word so the daily quota really finishes the draft.

How many words per day do I need if I fall behind?

Enter the days already gone and your current word count. The words still missing are divided by the days left, so after ten days with twelve thousand words written, the quota becomes one thousand nine hundred a day.

Can I set a goal other than 50,000 words?

Yes. Enter any word goal, larger or smaller, and the quota is worked out the same way over the 30 days of the challenge, so a class unit or a personal challenge can use its own target.

What happens on the last day if I still have words left?

Once all 30 days have passed with words still missing, there are no days left to spread them over, so no quota can be given. The calculator tells you the challenge has closed instead of inventing a target.

What the NaNoWriMo daily quota actually is

The official NaNoWriMo calendar is thirty days long. A writer who starts with a fifty-thousand-word target and zero words on day zero therefore needs fifty thousand divided by thirty, which is one thousand six hundred sixty-six and two thirds words per day, conventionally raised to one thousand six hundred sixty-seven whole words so the integer total still finishes the draft. After ten days with twelve thousand words on the page, remaining words are thirty-eight thousand and remaining days are twenty, so the quota is exactly one thousand nine hundred words per day. That is the entire algorithm: remaining_words equals the greater of zero and target_words minus words_written; remaining_days equals thirty minus days_elapsed; words_per_day is remaining_words divided by remaining_days, then raised to the next whole word when the quotient is not already an integer. When remaining_words is already zero, the quota is zero: the goal is met and no further daily target is required. When remaining_days is zero and words still remain, the challenge window has closed with the draft unfinished, which this endpoint reports as invalid_input rather than dividing by zero or inventing a last-day miracle. The calculator does not invent a calendar date, does not call a clock, and does not assume that today is November; you pass days_elapsed as a number so a rehearsal in July, a classroom simulation, and a live November dash all use the same contract. Catching up after a slow week is simply a larger remaining_words over fewer remaining_days, which is why the quota rises when you fall behind and falls when you get ahead.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Failed validation is not billed. POST a JSON body with three required finite numbers: target_words, the novel word goal (classically fifty thousand, but any non-negative finite total is accepted); days_elapsed, how many of the thirty challenge days have already passed; and words_written, the running total already on the page. Aliases target, word_goal, and goal are accepted for the first field; elapsed, elapsed_days, and days for the second; written, current, and word_count for the third. Each field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string. Missing fields, empty strings, and non-finite values fail with invalid_input naming the field. Any negative input fails with invalid_input: NaNoWriMo cannot owe you negative words, cannot un-elapse days, and cannot un-write a draft. days_elapsed cannot exceed thirty, the published length of the challenge; a value greater than thirty would make remaining_days negative, which is the same class of error as a negative input. On success the body echoes the three inputs, reports challenge_days as thirty, remaining_words, remaining_days, words_per_day as the integer daily quota, words_per_day_exact as the unrounded quotient, already_finished as a boolean, and a formula string restating the identity. Example: target_words fifty thousand, days_elapsed ten, words_written twelve thousand yields remaining_words thirty-eight thousand, remaining_days twenty, and words_per_day one thousand nine hundred. Where a NaNoWriMo words-per-day API earns its keep

Writing groups run a shared NaNoWriMo dashboard so every member pastes a target, elapsed days, and current word count and sees a single comparable daily quota instead of five incompatible spreadsheet formulas. Editors coaching a thirty-day sprint can re-run the calculator when a client raises the target from fifty thousand to seventy thousand without rewriting a custom script. Classroom novel units use the same endpoint as a teaching tool: students who start late see a higher remaining-days quotient and learn, numerically, why catching up is harder than starting on day one with a blank file. Personal trackers and habit apps call the API after each session so the home screen shows tomorrow's words_per_day without embedding calendar math that drifts when someone treats November as thirty-one days. Automation that already stores a word count from a progress form should call this endpoint rather than hard-coding fifty thousand divided by thirty, which is only correct on the morning of day one with an empty manuscript. Keep days_elapsed in the closed interval from zero through thirty, keep the other two fields non-negative, and you get a reproducible NaNoWriMo pace without standing up a writing-platform integration of your own.

Live November dashboards for writing groups

Each member submits target_words, days_elapsed, and words_written; the group board shows one comparable words_per_day quota instead of five conflicting spreadsheets.

How do I calculate my NaNoWriMo words per day?

Send finite non-negative numbers target_words, days_elapsed, and words_written. The API returns remaining_words = max(0, target_words − words_written), remaining_days = 30 − days_elapsed, and words_per_day as the ceiling of that quotient (or 0 if you have already finished).

What happens if I enter a negative word count or elapsed days?

The task fails with invalid_input. Negative targets, negative days_elapsed, and negative words_written are rejected and are not billed.

Does the calculator assume a 50,000-word target?

No. Fifty thousand is the classic official NaNoWriMo goal and the default example, but target_words can be any non-negative finite total so novellas, 70k drafts, and classroom word budgets all work.

What does the NaNoWriMo daily word-count calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
