Diagonal tile layout calculator

A 5 × 4 m room with 0.6 m square tiles and 5% breakage takes 67 tiles laid straight and 70 laid on the diagonal: 3 extra tiles. See both purchases and their waste side by side before you order. Free in your browser.

Choosing a diagonal tile pattern can transform a room, but it also changes how much material you must buy. This diagonal tile layout calculator estimates the extra whole tiles a forty-five degree layout needs compared with a straight axis-aligned grid for the same rectangular floor. You enter room length and width, tile length and width, and an optional breakage percentage for handling and shade lots. The engine builds a classic ceil grid for the straight layout, then applies a deterministic perimeter cut-band model for diagonal installs—band width from the tile diagonal, plus corner scrap—so you see tiles, waste area, and waste percent for both patterns side by side, plus the extra tiles and the extra percentage relative to the room and to the straight purchase. Keep all lengths in one unit system and treat the result as a planning estimate, not a substitute for a site measure by your installer.

How diagonal versus straight tile waste is estimated

Start from a rectangular room of length L and width W and a single tile of length tl and width tw, all in the same linear units so that room area L times W and tile area tl times tw share a consistent square unit. For a forty-five degree diagonal layout the packing density of full tiles in the interior remains the same area coverage per tile, but every wall cuts through tiles along a diagonal-like path and leaves triangular scraps that are hard to reuse.

The engine never lets the diagonal count fall below the straight count with the same breakage, which is a physical lower bound for the comparison. Extra tiles, extra waste area, extra waste percent of the room, and extra percent versus the straight purchase complete the report so you can audit the delta before you order boxes.

DIY pattern upgrade check

Measure the room, enter your tile size, and see how many extra whole tiles a 45° diagonal layout needs versus a straight grid before you buy.

SKU comparison for designers

Hold room size fixed, swap tile length and width across candidates, and rank which formats inflate diagonal cut waste the most.

What happens if tile or room size is zero or negative?

Room length, room width, tile length, and tile width must all be strictly positive.

Which units should I use?

Any consistent system: metres for room and tile edges, or feet for both.

What does it cost?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

Why does a diagonal layout waste more tiles?

Every wall cuts through tiles at an angle and leaves triangular scraps that are hard to reuse. The calculator adds a cut band along the whole perimeter, sized from the tile's diagonal, plus a corner allowance, so the diagonal count is never below the straight one.

What does the breakage percentage add?

An allowance for broken tiles, handling and shade differences between lots, on top of the cutting waste. It is applied equally to both layouts, so the comparison stays fair, and it counts as zero if you leave it empty.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

The same pure function powers the free browser tool and the paid API, so a showroom quote matches a later scripted estimate.

How diagonal versus straight tile waste is estimated

The straight layout uses the familiar whole-tile grid: count ceil of L divided by tl along the length and ceil of W divided by tw along the width, multiply those integers for tiles_straight_geo, then inflate by the optional breakage factor one plus breakage_percent over one hundred and ceil again so purchase counts stay whole. That straight purchase already includes the geometric waste of partial edge rows when the room is not an exact multiple of the tile. This calculator models that boundary loss as a waste band of width tile_diag divided by four along the full perimeter, plus a corner scrap term of tile_diag squared over four, where tile_diag is the Euclidean diagonal of one tile. Adding that cut waste area to the room area, dividing by tile area, applying the same breakage factor, and ceiling produces tiles_diagonal.

What you send and what you get back

Wire the free browser form for DIY and showroom planning, then call the identical contract from scripts when you need room-by-room schedules. Send four required finite numbers—room_length, room_width, tile_length, and tile_width—plus optional breakage_percent when you want the same handling allowance on both layouts. All dimensions must be strictly positive; breakage_percent must be non-negative when present and defaults to zero when omitted. Missing fields, empty strings, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input and are not charged. On success the response echoes cleaned room and tile geometry, room_area, perimeter, tile_diag, breakage_percent, the straight grid counts tiles_along_length and tiles_along_width, tiles_straight_geo and tiles_straight, area and waste for the straight layout, the diagonal intermediates waste_band_width, cut_waste_area, area_with_diag_cuts, and tiles_diag_exact, then tiles_diagonal with its area and waste, and the comparison fields extra_tiles, extra_waste_area, extra_waste_percent, and extra_vs_straight_percent. Classic checks include a five by four metre room with zero-point-six by zero-point-six metre tiles and five percent breakage: the straight ceil grid and the diagonal cut-band model both inflate, and extra_tiles is non-negative. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.

Where diagonal layout waste estimates show up in real work

Homeowners comparing a herringbone-adjacent or classic diamond look against a simple straight stack need a trustworthy delta before they approve a larger order of large-format porcelain. If you need total boxes from a single waste percent without a diagonal comparison, wall tile with openings, or grout joint volumes, use the dedicated floor tile, wall tile, or grout calculators—those search intents stay on their own landings rather than overloading this diagonal waste comparison page. Flooring contractors price change orders when a client upgrades from straight to diagonal: reporting extra_tiles and extra_waste_percent keeps the conversation numeric instead of vague. Interior designers holding room size fixed while swapping tile SKUs can re-run only tile_length and tile_width to see how larger tiles raise the relative cut band and therefore the diagonal premium. Property managers renovating corridors and lobbies feed batches of room dimensions through the API and attach extra waste lines to purchase orders so overstock is intentional. Because this capability is a pure parse engine, API pricing is the published base of $0.002 per successful item and failed validation does not consume balance.

Contractor change-order quotes

When a client switches from straight to diagonal, re-run the same dimensions and attach extra_tiles and extra_waste_percent to the revised material line.

How does this diagonal tile layout calculator work?

It builds a ceil grid for a straight layout, estimates diagonal cut waste from a perimeter band of width tile_diag/4 plus corner scrap, ceilings both purchase counts with optional breakage, and reports the extra tiles and percentages.

Is breakage_percent required?

No. It defaults to 0. Use a small positive value such as 5 when you want the same handling and shade-lot allowance applied to both layouts.
