Corner stud count calculator
A plan with 4 outside corners and 2 interior tees needs 16 extra studs: 12 in three-stud corners and 4 in two-stud tees. Add them to your straight-wall count so the cut list matches what the framers build. Free in your browser.

Framing takeoffs often under-order lumber at corners and partition intersections because linear wall-run formulas only place end studs on each plate. This corner stud count calculator answers a different question: given how many outside L-corners and how many interior tee intersections your plan has, how many studs belong in those assemblies? Pair it with a wall-run stud calculator for on-center layout, then add these assembly members so the cut list matches field practice for traditional or California corners.
Why corners and tees need their own stud count
A stud count for a straight wall run spaces studs on center and places one at each end of the plate. That is where many takeoffs come up short, because the places where walls meet need more wood than that. An outside L-corner is built as a pack of studs, traditionally three, so both walls have something to fasten to. An interior tee, where a partition meets a through wall, needs backup studs for attachment, two by default. Counting these assemblies separately and adding them to the wall-run count gives a cut list that matches field practice. With 4 corners and 2 tees, that is 16 studs on top of the runs.
How to count, and the usual slips
Walk the floor plan and mark every outside corner where two walls meet in an L, and every point where a partition butts a through wall as a tee. Do not try to infer corners from wall length; only the assemblies you count are multiplied. If two walls share a corner stud in the field, still count that corner once. Switch to two studs per corner when your crew frames California corners or other advanced two-stud details that leave a continuous insulation cavity, and raise tees to three when that is your shop standard. Recount whenever a revision adds a closet partition or removes a jog.
What you can do with it
DIY room addition and partition framing
Homeowners count L-corners and closet tees on a sketch, keep default three-stud corners, and know how many extra studs to buy beyond the straight wall runs.
Contractor bid automation
Estimating tools batch corner and tee counts from plan markup, apply shop stud-pack standards, and emit assembly stud totals for purchase orders without spreadsheets.
FAQ
What is the difference from a wall stud calculator?
A wall-run calculator places studs from plate length and on-center spacing. This tool only counts stud packs at L-corners and T-intersections you already marked on the plan.
When should I use two studs per corner?
Leave the default 3 for traditional three-stud outside corners common in residential wood framing.
What if corners or tees is negative or missing?
Both counts must be non-negative integers; missing fields, non-integers and negatives are rejected and not charged.
Is the corner stud count calculator free?
The browser tool runs free on your device.
What counts as a tee intersection?
Any place where an interior partition butts into a through wall, forming a T in plan. Each one gets backup studs for attachment, two by default, or three if your shop standard uses a three-stud tee.

Technical notes
You enter corner and tee counts, optionally override the default three-stud corner and two-stud tee packs, and receive corner_studs, tee_studs, and total_studs with a stable formula string. The browser tool runs free on your device; prepaid API calls cost $0.002 per successful item when estimating apps need the same deterministic contract.
Count outside corners and interior tee intersections on the plan
Walk the floor plan and mark every outside corner where two walls meet at an L, and every place an interior partition butts a through wall as a tee (T-intersection). If two walls share a corner stud in the field, still count that corner once here and let your material list deduplicate only when you intentionally merge cut lists. Consistent counting across revisions is what keeps purchase orders honest when the architect adds a closet partition or removes a jog. Send the outside corner count as corners; accepted aliases include outside_corners, corner_count and l_corners for spreadsheet column headers that prefer those names. Send the tee count as tees; aliases tee_count, intersections, t_intersections and interior_tees cover common takeoff labels. Both fields are required non-negative integers: zero is valid when a simple straight wall has no corners or tees in this line item, but negative values, non-integers, empty strings and missing fields fail with invalid_input and are not billed. Extremely large counts above the published maximum are rejected so integer multiplies stay stable on a Worker isolate. Do not invent corners from wall length alone—this endpoint does not measure plates or on-center spacing; it only multiplies the assemblies you already counted.
How studs_per_corner, studs_per_tee, and total_studs are computed
Each outside corner is treated as a stud pack: corner_studs equals corners multiplied by studs_per_corner. The default studs_per_corner is three, matching traditional three-stud outside corners used widely in residential wood framing. Set studs_per_corner to two when your crew uses California corners or other advanced-framing two-stud corner details that leave a continuous insulation cavity. Each interior tee uses studs_per_tee studs for backup and attachment; the default is two, and you may raise it to three when the shop standard packs three studs at every partition intersection. tee_studs equals tees times studs_per_tee; total_studs is the sum of corner_studs and tee_studs. Both optional factors must be integers from one through six inclusive; values outside that range, non-integers, or non-finite numbers raise invalid_input. The response echoes the four inputs (with defaults filled), the three computed counts, method always equal to corners_and_tees, and a formula string restating total equals corners times studs_per_corner plus tees times studs_per_tee. Identical inputs always produce identical JSON because the path is pure integer arithmetic with no network, random seed or wall clock. This capability does not count linear on-center studs along a plate—that is a separate wall-run problem—and it does not size headers, plates, cripples, fire blocking or king and jack studs at openings.
API usage, pricing, framing workflows, and practical limits
Call the free in-browser corner stud count calculator for quick site estimates, lumber-yard kiosks and contractor whiteboards without standing up a spreadsheet. POST a JSON body with corners and tees, plus optional studs_per_corner and studs_per_tee when defaults do not match your framing standard. Use the prepaid API when a renovation app, quantity-takeoff pipeline, modular home configurator or estimating tool needs a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with a wall stud calculator that takes plate length and on-center spacing so your full stud line is base run studs plus these corner and tee packs. Remember that shared corners between perpendicular walls may share a physical stud in the field—if your material list already deduplicates corners, post-process total_studs rather than double-counting across adjacent wall takeoffs. Authors shipping SDKs can map total_studs into purchase orders while showing corner_studs and tee_studs as explanatory detail for the estimator and inspector.

Technical questions
How does the corner stud count calculator work?
It multiplies outside corners by studs_per_corner (default 3) and tees by studs_per_tee (default 2), then sums those products into total_studs. Method is always corners_and_tees.
