Body Roundness Index calculator

Score how round your body shape is from waist and height alone: a waist of 80 cm at 170 cm tall lands in the low band, below a Body Roundness Index of 3.41. Unlike BMI, weight plays no part. Free in your browser.

Body Roundness Index, often abbreviated BRI, is a shape-based body composition index that models the human torso as an ellipse and scores how round that ellipse is relative to height. Unlike body mass index, which only uses weight and height, BRI starts from waist circumference and standing height, converts waist into a radius through division by two pi, compares that radius to half height, and turns the resulting geometric eccentricity into a continuous index with the Thomas scaling constants three hundred sixty four point two and three hundred sixty five point five. Higher values mean a rounder profile for a given stature and are often discussed alongside central adiposity screening, though BRI itself is not a diagnosis. This calculator applies the pure analytic path offline with no randomness, rejects non-physical inputs such as zero height or a waist so large that eccentricity would leave the real numbers, and returns the index together with intermediate geometry so teachers, coaches, and product teams can audit every step.

How Body Roundness Index is computed from waist and height

Start from two positive linear measurements taken with the same unit system: waist circumference, usually measured at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the iliac crest or at a protocol-defined waist landmark, and standing height without shoes. The Body Roundness Index treats the body outline as an ellipse whose semi-major axis is half of height and whose semi-minor axis is the waist radius obtained by dividing circumference by two pi.

Eccentricity of that ellipse is the square root of one minus the square of the ratio of semi-minor to semi-major axis, provided the waist radius does not exceed half height. The published BRI transform then maps eccentricity into a continuous index with BRI equals three hundred sixty four point two minus three hundred sixty five point five times eccentricity. When waist is small relative to height, eccentricity approaches one and BRI is low; as waist grows toward the geometric limit, eccentricity falls and BRI rises, reflecting a rounder shape.

This capability implements the analytic path only: no machine learning, no remote lookup tables, and no random jitter. Height and waist must both be strictly greater than zero; zero or negative values fail early with invalid input. Optional educational bands label low, moderate, high, and very high ranges for product demos; those labels are screening-style categories for education, not a clinical diagnosis.

Real care decisions need qualified professionals and fuller context this tool does not collect.

What you send and what you get back

Send two fields. Both fields are required. When height is zero or negative the error message states that height is zero or negative so the body roundness index is undefined or non-physical.

When waist is so large that waist divided by two pi exceeds half height, the error explains that ellipse eccentricity is not real and BRI is undefined. Classic smoke checks include an eighty centimeter waist with one hundred seventy centimeter height for a low-band BRI near two point eight two, and a one hundred centimeter waist with one hundred seventy five centimeter height for a higher BRI near four point eight.

Convert inches to centimeters or keep both measurements in inches before calling if your forms collect imperial units, because the geometric ratio is unitless only when both inputs match.

Where Body Roundness Index calculators show up in real work

Fitness coaches and digital health apps increasingly mention Body Roundness Index beside waist-to-height ratio and body mass index when they want a shape metric that emphasizes abdominal circumference relative to stature without requiring weight on the scale. Research assistants preparing synthetic screening datasets need deterministic BRI labels from waist and height without network calls or model drift. Public-health workshops and corporate wellness portals often walk through sample adults with tape-measure examples, and clear rejection of impossible geometry prevents broken demos.

If you later need body mass index, waist-to-height ratio alone, waist-hip ratio, basal metabolic rate, or body-fat equations from skinfolds, treat those as separate search intents and landings rather than overloading this body-roundness-index-calculator page. Always frame results as educational estimates, not medical diagnosis; clinical decisions require qualified professionals and context this tool does not collect, including age, sex, ethnicity, and laboratory findings.

Coaching and wellness intake

Compute a transparent Body Roundness Index and educational band from tape-measure waist and height before deeper body-composition work.

Classroom geometry and health demos

Generate deterministic BRI and eccentricity values for lesson sets so teachers and auto-graders share one ground truth including invalid geometry rejection.

What is Body Roundness Index?

BRI is a dimensionless shape index from waist circumference and height. Higher values indicate a rounder profile for a given height.

What happens if height is zero or negative?

Height must be strictly greater than zero because half height is the ellipse semi-major axis and a non-positive height makes BRI undefined or non-physical.

Do waist and height need the same units?

Yes. Both must use the same linear unit (for example both cm or both inches). The geometric ratio is unitless only when the two inputs match.

What does it cost?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

What do the Body Roundness Index bands mean?

Below 3.41 is low, 3.41 to 4.44 moderate, 4.45 to 5.45 high, and 5.46 or more very high. They are screening-style labels for education, not a diagnosis, and higher values mean a rounder profile for your height.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

How Body Roundness Index is computed from waist and height

Identical waist and height always yield the same JSON. If waist over two pi is greater than half height, the eccentricity expression is not real over ordinary floating-point arithmetic, so the request fails with a clear invalid input message rather than returning NaN.

What you send and what you get back

Waist is circumference in the same linear unit as height, typically centimeters, and must be a finite number strictly greater than zero; aliases waist_cm, waist_circumference, circumference, and wc are accepted. Height is standing height in that same unit and must also be finite and strictly greater than zero; aliases height_cm, ht, and cm are accepted. Missing fields, non-numeric strings, NaN, Infinity, zero, and negative values fail with invalid_input and are not charged. On success the response returns bri and body_roundness_index as the same cleaned index, eccentricity, waist_radius, half_height, cleaned waist and height echoes, unit index, educational band and band_note, the formula string for the Thomas transform, method body_roundness_index, and a thresholds object summarizing the four educational bands. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.

Where Body Roundness Index calculators show up in real work

Because this capability is a pure parse engine, API pricing is the published base of $0.002 per successful item and failed validation does not consume balance.

App and API fixtures

Bulk-produce golden BRI JSON for onboarding flows and regression tests without network calls or non-deterministic models.

What if waist is extremely large compared with height?

If waist/(2π) exceeds half height, ellipse eccentricity is not a real number and the request fails with invalid_input rather than returning NaN or a complex value.
