Alcohol calorie calculator

Estimate the calories in one drink from its volume, strength and sugar: a 330 ml lager at 5% ABV with no residual sugar holds 13.02 g of alcohol and 91.13 kcal. For sweet styles, add the grams of sugar in the glass. Free in your browser.

This alcohol calorie calculator estimates how many kilocalories are in a single alcoholic drink from three practical inputs: serving volume in millilitres, alcohol by volume as a percentage, and residual sugar in grams for the whole serving. Pure alcohol volume is volume times ABV over one hundred; alcohol mass uses the fixed ethanol density of zero point seven eight nine grams per millilitre; alcohol energy uses seven kilocalories per gram and residual sugar uses four kilocalories per gram. For a familiar check, a three hundred thirty millilitre lager at five percent ABV with no residual sugar yields roughly ninety-one kilocalories under the model used here. The arithmetic is fully deterministic finite math with no network calls, no sampling, and no date-dependent shortcuts.

Where alcohol calorie estimates fit in nutrition, products, and study

Dietitians and clients use a transparent per-drink estimate before they adjust for cream liqueurs, syrups, or shared pitchers. App builders map a bar or home-pour form into log entries without shipping opaque calculator code that drifts between platforms. Students and nutrition trainees check textbook examples that assume volume times ABV times density times seven plus sugar times four and need a fast, offline source of kilocalories.

Product and education tools use the same contract when a learner types three hundred thirty millilitres, five percent ABV, and zero residual sugar and the UI must show pure alcohol millilitres, alcohol grams, alcohol kilocalories, sugar kilocalories, and total kilocalories beside the inputs. Non-positive volume is rejected rather than silently treated as a zero-calorie drink, so the UI can prompt for a real serving size.

Pair it with calorie deficit planners, walking or swimming burn tools, or unit converters when you are building a small lab of free, deterministic health calculators, and always treat the output as a planning estimate rather than a clinical prescription for alcohol use or medical advice.

Bar menu and label planning

Estimate kilocalories for a known pour volume at the labelled ABV, with residual sugar when the style is off-dry or sweet.

What does the alcohol calorie calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page.

How are calories calculated?

Pure alcohol millilitres equal volume times ABV over 100. Grams use density 0.789 g/ml. Alcohol kcal = grams × 7; sugar kcal = residual sugar grams × 4; total is the sum.

What happens if volume is zero or negative?

Non-positive volume cannot define a meaningful alcohol calorie estimate.

Does this include mixers or cream fat?

No. The model covers ethanol from ABV plus optional residual sugar only.

How many calories are in a 330 ml beer at 5% ABV?

About 91.13 kcal if it has no residual sugar. The 330 ml contain 16.5 ml of pure alcohol, which weighs 13.02 g, and every gram of alcohol counts as 7 kcal.

What the alcohol calorie estimate returns and how to read it

Drink energy from ethanol and leftover sugars is a product of serving size, strength, and carbohydrate left after fermentation, not a lifestyle profile from age or sex. This calculator does not invent mixers, cream fat, or cooking loss; you supply the volume you want to model, the labelled ABV, and residual sugar in grams for that same serving when you know it. Internally, alcohol by volume becomes pure alcohol millilitres, density zero point seven eight nine grams per millilitre turns that volume into grams of ethanol, seven kilocalories per gram gives alcohol energy, and four kilocalories per gram gives sugar energy, which is the same family of Atwater-style conversions used across nutrition worksheets. The response echoes volume in millilitres, ABV percent, residual sugar grams, pure alcohol millilitres, alcohol grams, alcohol kilocalories, sugar kilocalories, total kilocalories, the ethanol density constant, a method tag ethanol_density_atwater, a short formula string, and the decimal precision used. There is no machine-learning path and no random sampling: either the finite arithmetic succeeds inside the documented limits or the request fails with invalid_input. Rejected cases include missing volume or ABV, non-finite values, volume above the documented ceiling, residual sugar above the documented ceiling, ABV outside zero to one hundred, negative residual sugar, and any non-positive volume, because a non-positive serving size cannot define a meaningful drink energy estimate. If you need calories burned walking, swimming, or a daily deficit plan, pair this page with those dedicated tools; this landing answers only drink alcohol and residual-sugar energy with stable numeric output for worksheets, product UIs, and API consumers that must not invent adaptive models.

How volume, ABV, and residual sugar are read and kept reproducible

When residual sugar is omitted it defaults to zero so dry beers and spirits without a sugar figure still compute cleanly. Optional leading plus signs and scientific notation on numeric strings are allowed when they parse as finite decimals; embedded spaces, hex prefixes, and non-numeric tokens are rejected with a clear message so a bad cell does not become a wrong calorie total. The preferred fields are volume_ml for serving size in millilitres, abv_percent for alcohol by volume as a percentage, and optional residual_sugar_g for grams of sugar in the whole drink. Aliases such as volume, ml, serving_ml, drink_ml, abv, alcohol_percent, alcohol_pct, pct_abv, sugar_g, residual_sugar, sugar, and carbs_g are accepted so spreadsheets, query strings, and typed forms can reuse one contract. An optional precision field, with aliases decimals and dp, chooses how many decimal places to expose, defaulting to two and capped at fifteen so JSON goldens stay stable. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical mathematical result inside an automated pipeline without re-implementing the drink formulas yourself.

Where alcohol calorie estimates fit in nutrition, products, and study

On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog and lets you move from a classroom demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result.

Deterministic test fixtures

Seed CI and unit tests with fixed total_kcal, alcohol_g, and pure_alcohol_ml from the ethanol-density Atwater model.

Is residual sugar required?

No. It defaults to zero when omitted. Provide residual_sugar_g in grams for the whole serving when you know residual carbohydrates.
