Absolute neutrophil count calculator

Turn a lab differential into an absolute neutrophil count: a white count of 7.5 ×10³/µL with 55% segmented neutrophils and 3% bands gives 4.35 ×10³/µL, or 4,350 cells/µL. If your report has no bands, leave them out and they count as zero. Free in your browser.

Absolute neutrophil count is the clinical number clinicians watch when chemotherapy, infection risk, or febrile neutropenia is on the table. Laboratories report a white blood cell count and a differential that lists segmented neutrophils and often band forms as percentages; the absolute count is not always printed next to every line. This capability multiplies the white cell count by the combined neutrophil and band percentages and returns both the conventional ×10³/µL figure and the cells-per-microlitre absolute.

What absolute neutrophil count measures and why it matters

Neutrophils are the most abundant circulating white cells and the front line against bacterial infection. Absolute neutrophil count expresses how many of those cells are present per unit of blood, not merely what fraction of the differential they occupy. A patient with a white count of two thousand and ninety percent neutrophils still has far fewer absolute neutrophils than someone with a white count of ten thousand and fifty percent neutrophils; percentage alone misleads when the total leukocyte pool is suppressed.

Oncology protocols, G-CSF thresholds and febrile neutropenia pathways therefore key off ANC bands rather than raw percentages. The standard teaching formula is ANC equals white blood cell count times the sum of segmented neutrophil percent and band percent, divided by one hundred. When the laboratory reports WBC in ×10³ per microlitre—the usual CBC unit—the product is already in ×10³/µL; multiplying by one thousand yields cells per microlitre.

Bands are immature neutrophils; some differentials fold them into a single neutrophil percentage and report bands as zero, while others list them separately. This calculator accepts both styles: supply band percent when it is present, or omit it and the engine treats bands as zero so the formula still holds. Results are transparent arithmetic on your inputs—no machine-learning model, no population table and no hidden adjustment for age or sex—so you can re-run the same numbers years later and match audit logs exactly.

Where it fits in real clinical and product workflows

Chemotherapy education apps collect a home CBC printout and need a defensible ANC before showing risk messaging or prompting a nurse call. Clinical research coordinators batch-convert study-subject differentials into absolute counts for secondary analysis without spreading spreadsheet formulas that diverge by cell or unit. Telehealth triage tools surface ANC next to fever status so clinicians see absolute risk rather than an isolated white-count percentage.

Electronic health record plugins can recompute ANC when a lab feeds percent differentials without an absolute column. The browser path is free for single checks: enter seven point five thousand white cells, fifty-five percent segs and three percent bands, and confirm the absolute lands near four thousand three hundred fifty cells per microlitre.

What does it cost?

The same calculation runs free in your browser on this page.

Is this a diagnosis of neutropenia?

No. This returns the absolute neutrophil count arithmetic only. Clinical interpretation and thresholds remain with the care team.

Why was my request rejected?

WBC must be a positive number. Neutrophil and band percentages must be finite and between 0 and 100.

What if my lab already reports absolute neutrophils?

You can still recompute from WBC and percentages to verify the printed absolute, or skip this tool when the lab already provides ANC in cells/µL.

How do I calculate the absolute neutrophil count from a blood test?

Multiply the white cell count by the sum of the segmented and band neutrophil percentages, then divide by 100. With 7.5, 55% and 3%, the count is 4.35 ×10³/µL, which is 4,350 cells per microlitre.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

There is no fitness-tracker guesswork, no third-party lab API and no hidden activity multipliers—only the standard ANC formula on three scalars.

How to call the API and interpret the fields

There is no network hop, model call or randomness, so latency stays in the pure edge-parse band. Pair the result with your own clinical thresholds—for example the familiar ANC under five hundred cells/µL severe neutropenia band—outside this capability; the engine stops at the arithmetic so product copy stays honest about what was computed. Send a required white cell count as wbc in ×10³/µL (aliases white_cell_count, wbc_k, leukocytes) and a required neutrophil_percent between zero and one hundred inclusive (aliases segs, segs_percent, polys, neutrophils). Optionally send band_percent in the same zero-to-one-hundred range (aliases bands, bands_percent, band_neutrophils); when omitted, bands default to zero. Missing or empty wbc or neutrophil_percent fails immediately with invalid_input and is not charged. Non-positive white counts, non-finite numbers, percentages outside zero to one hundred, or a combined neutrophil-plus-band total above one hundred also raise invalid_input with a clear field message. A successful response echoes the normalized wbc, neutrophil_percent and band_percent, the summed total_neutrophil_percent, anc_k in ×10³/µL, anc_cells_per_ul in cells per microlitre, unit labels for each quantity, a human-readable formula string, and method absolute_neutrophil_count for audit trails.

Where it fits in real clinical and product workflows

Developers embed the call in scheduled jobs and webhooks so every microservice shares one definition of the ANC formula instead of reimplementing float-sensitive multiplies that disagree on whether WBC was already in cells per microlitre. The API path costs $0.002 per successful request and is billed per item, which keeps bulk onboarding scripts cheap while still covering edge execution.

Which inputs does the formula expect?

WBC in ×10³/µL (positive), neutrophil_percent from 0 to 100, and optional band_percent from 0 to 100 (defaults to 0). Their sum must not exceed 100.
