Zodiac element calculator

A March 25 birthday is Aries: element fire, modality cardinal, sharing fire with Leo and Sagittarius. Enter any birth month and day to get the element, the modality and the matching signs for a profile, a quiz or a lesson. Free in your browser.

People often ask not only which sun sign they are, but which classical element and quality that sign belongs to—fire, earth, air, or water, and cardinal, fixed, or mutable. This zodiac element calculator takes a birth month and day, maps them to the Western tropical sign with a fixed popular cusp table, and returns the element and modality as first-class fields together with the sign name, Unicode glyph, the other signs that share the same element and the same modality, and a readable date range for context. Invalid combinations such as month thirteen or April thirty-first fail with invalid input and are not charged.

Birth month, day, and how tropical cusps yield an element

Send two integers: month from one for January through twelve for December, and day as the day of that month. The engine first checks that the pair is a possible civil birth date under a simple table—thirty or thirty-one days for most months, and February allowing one through twenty-nine so leap-day birthdays are accepted without requiring a year.

It then places the date on a fixed Western tropical cusp table used for popular sign lists: for example March twenty-first through April nineteenth maps to Aries (fire, cardinal), April twentieth through May twentieth to Taurus (earth, fixed), and so on through Sagittarius, with Capricorn spanning December twenty-second through January nineteenth across the year boundary.

From that sign the classical element and modality are read from a static table—Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are fire; Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn are earth; Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are air; Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are water—while modality groups the twelve signs into cardinal starters, fixed sustainers, and mutable adapters. These ranges are conventional fixed windows, not year-by-year astronomical ingress times; if you need precise solar longitude for a given year you want an ephemeris product, not this calculator.

Element badges and profile filters

Apps collect birth month and day, show fire, earth, air, or water with modality, and store the structured element for match filters and themed badges.

How do I find my zodiac element from a birth date?

The response includes element (fire, earth, air, or water), modality, sign, and the lists of signs that share that element and modality.

What if I enter an invalid month or day?

Months outside 1–12 and days that cannot occur in that month (for example April 31) are rejected and not charged.

What are the four zodiac elements?

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Each sign also has a modality: cardinal, fixed, or mutable.

Is the zodiac element calculator free?

The browser tool runs free on your device.

Does birth year or birth time matter?

No. Only month and day are required for this tropical element lookup. Year, time, and place are not used; February 29 is accepted as a valid day without a year.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

POSThttps://api.kit.forhosting.com/date/zodiac-element

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

curl -X POST https://api.kit.forhosting.com/date/zodiac-element \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KIT_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"month":3,"day":25}'

}

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

Published price — no tokens, no invented credits. A failed task is never charged.

401unauthorizedMissing or invalid API key.
402insufficient_balanceYour balance doesn't cover the task price.
404unknown_typeThat task type doesn't exist.
429rate_limitedToo many requests. Use the webhook instead of polling.

The path is pure integer validation and comparison: no ephemeris download, no wall clock, and no timezone surprises, so the same birth month and day always produce the same JSON in tests and in production.

Birth month, day, and how tropical cusps yield an element

Aliases m and mon for month and d and day_of_month for day are accepted when documented. Missing fields, non-integers, months outside one through twelve, and days that cannot occur in the given month—such as February thirtieth or November thirty-first—raise invalid_input with a message that names the problem so forms and APIs can correct the payload instead of inventing an element.

Reading element, modality, sibling signs, and structured bounds

The element field is one of fire, earth, air, or water—the primary answer this product is built for—and modality is cardinal, fixed, or mutable so teaching UIs can show quality without a second lookup. The sign field is the English tropical name such as Gemini or Scorpio and symbol is the Unicode glyph; both identify which sun sign owned the element for that birth day. On success the response echoes the normalized month and day plus month_name in English for display. The element_signs array lists the three signs that share the same element, and modality_signs lists the four that share the same modality, so quizzes and lesson tools can render triplicity and quadruplicity groups from one response. The date_range string joins the inclusive start and end of the sign in a single human line, while range_start and range_end repeat those bounds as objects with month, day, and month_name for tables and localization layers. Use element alone for a badge color or filter; pair element with modality for classical attribute chips; use element_signs when teaching triplicities.

API usage, pricing, product workflows, and limits

Call the free in-browser zodiac element calculator for quizzes, onboarding previews, and classroom demos without installing astrology libraries. Keep expectations honest: this product does not compute rising signs, houses, Chinese animals, or sidereal placements, and cusp enthusiasts who care about exact solar ingress for a specific year should treat the fixed table as the popular convention, not an astronomical certificate. Source inputs follow the same retention rules as other KIT parse items. Send a JSON body with required integer fields month and day. Use the prepaid API when a dating app, content site, wellness form, or education tool needs a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with a western zodiac sign calculator when you already show the sign name elsewhere and only need element and modality highlighted, or with calendar length tools when you first validate full dates before extracting classical attributes. Authors shipping SDKs can map element and modality straight into UI chips, color themes, and filter facets, and show element_signs and modality_signs in an expandable details row from the same response without extra client tables or hard-coded triplicity lists.

Quizzes and content sites

Editorial and entertainment sites run a free zodiac element calculator widget and reuse the same JSON via API for server-rendered explainer pages.

Education and triplicity lessons

Lesson tools display element_signs and modality_signs so students learn classical groupings without maintaining their own cusp or attribute tables.
