Working capital turnover ratio
Net annual sales of 500,000 on average working capital of 100,000 give a turnover of 5: five units of sales for every unit tied up in working capital. Enter both figures for the same year. Free in your browser.

Working capital turnover is the activity ratio that states how many units of net annual sales a firm produces from each unit of average working capital. Controllers, lenders, and equity analysts who search for a working capital turnover ratio calculator want that quotient from two familiar income-statement and balance-sheet amounts, not a current ratio, not inventory days, and not the asset-turnover factor inside a DuPont ROE tree. A result of five means five units of sales per unit of working capital over the year.
What the working capital turnover ratio measures and how the multiple is formed
The working capital turnover ratio answers a single efficiency question: how many units of net annual sales does the firm generate from each unit of average working capital? Average working capital is the typical stock of current assets minus current liabilities over the year, often the mean of opening and closing working capital, in one currency. Net annual sales is the income-statement figure for the same twelve months, after returns and allowances, in that same currency.
A ratio of 5.0 means five units of sales per unit of working capital. A higher print often means the firm converts its net current assets into revenue quickly; a very high print can also mean the buffer of working capital is thin relative to the sales book, which credit analysts treat as a liquidity flag rather than a trophy. A low print means more working capital sits idle for each unit of sales.
Negative working capital is accepted: many retailers run current liabilities above current assets and still produce a finite negative ratio that a memo can discuss. The calculator does not rebuild working capital from current-asset and current-liability lines, does not annualize a stub quarter, and does not apply a sector hurdle: those belong in your model.
What you can do with it
Credit files and lender screens
Turn reported net annual sales and average working capital into the activity print a credit memo ranks when it asks how many sales dollars the borrower produces per unit of net current assets.
Treasury and working-capital reviews
Paste year-end net sales and the mean of opening and closing working capital so the implied turnover is visible before a cash-conversion-cycle chart is built.
FAQ
What happens if average working capital is zero?
Working-capital turnover is a quotient, so a zero denominator is undefined and is not billed.
Can average working capital be negative?
Zero is the only working-capital value this calculator rejects.
Is working-capital turnover the same as asset turnover or inventory turnover?
No. Asset turnover divides sales by total assets. Inventory turnover divides COGS or sales by inventory. This calculator divides net annual sales by average working capital.
Is a higher working capital turnover always better?
Not always. A higher ratio often means net current assets turn into revenue quickly, but a very high one can mean the working capital buffer is thin, which credit analysts treat as a liquidity warning.
How do I work out average working capital?
Usually as the mean of opening and closing working capital, that is current assets minus current liabilities, for the same year and in the same currency as the sales figure.

Technical notes
This tool accepts finite net annual sales and average working capital, divides the first by the second, and returns the ratio as a deterministic JSON contract you can pin in tests. Average working capital of zero is rejected with invalid_input rather than Infinity.
What the working capital turnover ratio measures and how the multiple is formed
This tool divides those two finite amounts and returns working_capital_turnover. Because division by zero is undefined, an average_working_capital of zero fails with invalid_input instead of Infinity, NaN, or a signed multiple a form might treat as infinite efficiency.
Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour
Near-zero values inside a tiny epsilon are treated the same way, so a denormalized float cannot sneak through as Infinity. Negative working capital is accepted and yields a negative ratio. POST a JSON body that supplies net_annual_sales and average_working_capital. net_annual_sales is net revenue for the year in a single currency unit, a finite number that may be zero and then yields a turnover of zero, with aliases net_sales, sales, annual_sales, revenue, and net_revenue. average_working_capital is the mean working-capital stock for the same year in the same currency, a finite number that must be non-zero, with aliases working_capital, avg_working_capital, nwc, average_nwc, and avg_nwc. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string in ordinary decimal notation. Missing net_annual_sales, missing average_working_capital, empty strings, non-finite values, or a magnitude above the declared limit fail with invalid_input naming the field and are not billed. Zero average working capital is the error this landing exists to catch: the message contains average_working_capital and zero so a form can highlight that control instead of showing a global alert. On success the body echoes both inputs, returns working_capital_turnover as the rounded quotient, and includes a formula string restating the identity working_capital_turnover equals net_annual_sales divided by average_working_capital. Example: net_annual_sales of five hundred thousand against average_working_capital of one hundred thousand yields working_capital_turnover of 5. Pair the ratio with your own sector median if the memo needs an efficient or stretched flag; this endpoint computes the activity ratio only and does not invent a credit verdict.
Where a working capital turnover ratio calculator earns its keep
Credit files, treasury dashboards, and student models rank for a working capital turnover ratio calculator because a lender or controller thinks in sales per unit of net current assets, not in a raw sales total. Corporate-development associates live on teaser figures; dividing advertised net sales by advertised average working capital gives the same print without forcing anyone to remember whether a cell already netted current liabilities. Educators teaching CFA-style activity ratios can seed classroom examples that fail loudly on zero working capital instead of printing Infinity a student might treat as infinite efficiency. Failed validation does not consume balance. Public-markets scanners use the same identity on filing sales against average net working capital, and the JSON contract does not care which story produced the numerator. Keep average_working_capital non-zero, pin the rounded working_capital_turnover field in tests, and you get a reproducible activity ratio for widgets, course modules, and edge workers without standing up a statement-mapping engine of your own. Portfolio scripts can call the same module in a loop over many tickers; each item is one request, the unit is item, and the free browser path remains byte-for-byte identical to the API so a landing-page preview never lies about the figure that will be stored after a save.
Integration use cases
Classroom and CFA activity-ratio drills
Seed examples that return a rounded turnover on non-zero working capital and fail loudly when average_working_capital is zero.
Technical questions
How is the working capital turnover ratio calculated from net annual sales and average working capital?
Send finite numbers net_annual_sales and average_working_capital. The API returns working_capital_turnover as net_annual_sales divided by average_working_capital, rounded to six decimal places.
What does the working capital turnover ratio calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
