Venous blood pH calculator

A venous pH of 7.36 is normal, because it sits inside the adult venous range of 7.31 to 7.41. Enter one reading to see whether it means acidemia, normal or alkalemia, without arterial limits mixed in. Free in your browser.

Venous blood pH is the hydrogen-ion activity measured on a venous sample, typically a few hundredths of a unit more acidic than a paired arterial reading. Laboratories and teaching tables interpret that single number against a fixed adult venous reference interval so the same value is labelled the same way every time: acidemia when it sits below the lower bound, normal when it lies inside the interval, and alkalemia when it sits above the upper bound. This venous blood pH interpreter accepts one finite pH, rejects values outside the plausible physiologic window of 6.5 to 8, and returns a structured classification with the echoed reading, the published bounds, and a stable machine key.

What venous blood pH means and which bands this calculator uses

Hydrogen-ion activity on a blood gas is reported as pH, a unitless logarithmic scale. Arterial teaching tables usually treat 7.35 through 7.45 as normal; venous blood runs a little more acidic because tissues have already extracted oxygen and added carbon dioxide, so a common adult venous interval is 7.31 through 7.41. This capability encodes that venous table, not the arterial one, because people who search for venous blood pH are not looking for an ABG interpreter and not looking for a chemistry pH-from-concentration tool.

Acidemia means the measured pH is below the lower reference bound; alkalemia means it is above the upper bound; normal means it sits on or between 7.31 and 7.41. Those three words name the pH state.

Venous-blood-gas teaching labs

Instructors feed a single venous pH and show whether the reading is acidemia, normal, or alkalemia under a fixed 7.31–7.41 table without mixing arterial bounds.

What venous blood pH range does this calculator use?

A fixed adult venous teaching interval of 7.31–7.41 inclusive. pH below 7.31 is acidemia, 7.31–7.41 is normal, and pH above 7.41 is alkalemia. Arterial tables (typically 7.35–7.45) are a different contract.

What is the difference between acidemia and alkalemia?

Acidemia means the measured venous pH is below the lower reference bound. Alkalemia means it is above the upper bound. Those words name the pH state; acidosis and alkalosis name the process and are not classified here.

What happens if the pH is outside 6.5 to 8?

Values outside the plausible physiologic range 6.5 to 8 are rejected rather than clamped into acidemia or alkalemia, and they are not billed.

Is the venous blood pH calculator free?

The browser tool runs free on your device.

Is this a medical diagnosis?

No. It is an educational classification of a single venous pH against a published teaching interval. It does not replace a full blood-gas panel, clinical assessment, or professional medical advice.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

What venous blood pH means and which bands this calculator uses

They are not the same as acidosis and alkalosis, which name the metabolic or respiratory process that produced the state and would require PCO2, bicarbonate, and anion-gap context this endpoint does not accept. Send the required field ph as a finite number or numeric string; aliases venous_ph, blood_ph, value, and ph_value are accepted. The plausible physiologic window is 6.5 through 8 inclusive: values below 6.5 or above 8 fail with invalid_input instead of being clamped into acidemia or alkalemia. Identical inputs always yield identical JSON because the algorithm never touches a network, a model, a clock, or a random generator. This is an educational classification of a single number, not a diagnostic medical device.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

In_reference is true only when classification is normal. Boundary values 7.31 and 7.41 are normal. POST a JSON body with the required finite number ph. The field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string; missing fields, empty strings, booleans, and non-finite values fail with invalid_input naming ph. A reading outside the plausible range 6.5 to 8 also fails with invalid_input, and those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes ph with stable rounding, sets classification to the machine key acidemia, normal, or alkalemia, and sets classification_label to the matching human phrase for chips and reports. Reference_low is 7.31, reference_high is 7.41, and reference_range is the compact string 7.31-7.41 so clients can print the interval without re-hardcoding it. Plausible_min and plausible_max restates the 6.5-to-8 window that was enforced. Method is always venous_blood_ph_bands so downstream code can distinguish this landing from arterial tables or chemistry calculators. Example: ph 7.36 is normal and in_reference true; ph 7.22 is acidemia; ph 7.48 is alkalemia. Use classification for filters and analytics, classification_label for user-facing copy, and the echoed ph when you only need a display line. Do not confuse this endpoint with arterial blood-gas full panels, blood-pressure category tools, chemistry strong-acid pH solvers, or converters between milligrams per decilitre and millimoles per litre — those are different search intents and different contracts.

API usage, pricing, product workflows, and practical limits

Call the free in-browser venous blood pH calculator for classroom demos, nursing skills labs, and quick personal checks without reimplementing the 7.31-to-7.41 table in every spreadsheet. Source inputs follow the same retention rules as other KIT parse items, and results are safe to pin in tests because the algorithm is fully deterministic. Keep expectations educational: a single venous pH does not replace a full blood-gas interpretation, does not identify the process behind the number, and does not substitute for professional medical advice when a person has symptoms, known acid-base disease, or an unexpected laboratory flag. Send a JSON body with the required venous pH. Use the prepaid API when a health SaaS, telehealth intake form, electronic worksheet, or school LMS needs a stable contract under prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with your own sample workflow — correct venous technique, timely analysis, and temperature handling — then store classification alongside the raw pH for dashboards and export CSV columns for ph, classification, reference_range, and method. Authors shipping SDKs can map classification and classification_label into colour bands and alert thresholds — the same ordered labels students learn when they first separate acidemia from alkalemia.

Nursing and health-science homework

Students submit a venous pH and pin expected classification JSON in automated checkers with deterministic acidemia, normal, and alkalemia outputs.

Intake forms and lab-result dashboards

Server pipelines that already store a venous pH call a prepaid endpoint for a stable classification key instead of duplicating reference bands in every language.
