Tree value calculator
A condition rating of 0.8 keeps 80 % of a tree's basic value: the calculator multiplies trunk cross-sectional area by the species value factor and the condition rating to give a replacement-style appraisal after storm or construction damage. Free in your browser.

Appraising a landscape tree in currency is a standard task for municipal arborists, insurance adjusters, and property valuers who need a replacement figure after storm damage, construction injury, or a claim. The trunk-formula family of methods multiplies the stem’s cross-sectional area by a species value factor and then by a condition rating so that a large, desirable, healthy tree is worth more than a small, low-rated, declining one.
What the three-factor trunk formula means
A monetary tree appraisal is not a timber-cruise volume times a mill price. Landscape trees are valued for the amenity they already provide on a site, so the usual starting point is a replacement-cost identity that scales with the size of the stem, the desirability of the species, and how sound the specimen is today. Cross-sectional area is the size term: it is the circular (or already-computed) area of the trunk at the appraisal height, typically breast height, in square inches or square centimetres.
A larger area means a larger basic replacement figure before any quality adjustment. The species value factor is the currency assigned to one square unit of that area for the species under review — a published or locally adopted dollar-per-square-inch (or equivalent) rate that already encodes how sought-after that species is relative to a reference tree.
The condition rating is a decimal fraction between zero and one that records structural and biological health: one means a sound tree, zero means no remaining amenity value, and a typical street tree might sit at zero point seven to zero point nine. The product is the appraised value in the same currency unit as the species value factor. Zero area, a zero species factor, or a zero condition rating all produce a zero appraisal, which is the honest result when any factor says the tree contributes nothing.
A negative factor is not a physical rating and is rejected rather than silently flipped or clamped.
A missing field fails the same way. Any factor that is strictly negative fails with a message that it must not be negative — those failures are not billed. Condition is not converted from a 0–100 percent: send 0.80 for an eighty-percent rating, not 80, or the product will be eighty times too large.
A formula string restates the identity and a method tag names the three-factor trunk formula so clients can log which appraisal they used. Example: an area of two hundred, a species value factor of forty, and a condition rating of zero point eight yields a basic value of eight thousand and an appraised value of six thousand four hundred. Optional output keys are omitted rather than set to null.
Where a tree value calculator earns its keep
Municipal inventories and risk programmes often already store diameter or area, a species code, and a condition score. Calling a tree value calculator from a work-order or storm-claim script turns those three stored numbers into a consistent currency figure without a handwritten product that drops a decimal. Insurance desks use the same identity when a vehicle or a contractor injures a specimen and the adjuster needs a first-pass replacement cost that matches the agency’s published species factor and the inspector’s condition fraction.
Content sites that rank for tree value calculator benefit from a live tool whose free browser path matches the paid automation path on the same pure module. Failed validation does not consume balance. Pin the rounded appraised value in continuous integration, keep requests to one stem, and you get reproducible currency figures for LMS plugins, edge workers, and spreadsheet add-ins without standing up a full appraisal information system.
The calculator will not choose the species factor or judge condition for you; that is professional judgement. It will tell you, exactly and repeatedly, what product those three factors imply.
What you can do with it
Storm-claim first-pass replacement cost
Multiply stored trunk area, the agency species value factor, and the inspector’s condition rating to attach a consistent currency figure to each damaged street tree.
Municipal inventory to work-order value
Turn plot-card area, species factor, and condition into an appraised value when a construction permit or removal request needs a replacement number.
Urban-forestry teaching labs
Let students change area, species factor, and condition one at a time and check by hand that the appraised value is the three-factor product.
FAQ
What happens if a factor is negative?
Area, species value factor, and condition rating must each be a finite number that is zero or greater. Negative factors are rejected and are not billed.
Should condition rating be a percent or a fraction?
Send a decimal fraction: 0.80 means 80 percent condition. Do not send 80 unless you intend to multiply the basic value by eighty.
Does this include a location rating or a species look-up table?
No. The calculator multiplies the three numbers you provide. Choose the species value factor and condition rating from your local guide, then send them.
How is a landscape tree's value calculated?
Multiply the trunk's cross-sectional area by the species value factor, then by the condition rating. The area sets the size, the species factor says how desirable the species is, and the condition rating records how sound the tree is.
What does a condition rating of zero mean?
That the tree has no remaining amenity value, so the appraised value is zero. A rating of one means a sound tree; ratings in between scale the basic value down in proportion.

Technical notes
This tree value calculator accepts those three non-negative numbers, returns the appraised value, and rejects any negative factor with invalid_input.
What the three-factor trunk formula means
Multiplying the three numbers is the entire algorithm this endpoint runs. It does not apply a separate location rating, a depreciation table, or a species look-up; those judgements belong to the appraiser who then sends the three factors they have already chosen.
Input contract, response fields, and validation behaviour
POST a JSON object with three required finite numbers: area, the non-negative cross-sectional trunk area; species_value_factor, the non-negative currency per unit area; and condition_rating, the non-negative decimal fraction that scales the basic value. Aliases cross_sectional_area, trunk_area, and basal_area are accepted for area; species_factor, species_value, and species for the species value factor; condition and condition_factor for the rating. Numeric strings that parse as finite numbers are accepted; empty strings, booleans, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input naming the field. On success the body echoes the cleaned area, species_value_factor, and condition_rating; returns basic_value as area times the species factor (the unadjusted replacement figure); and returns appraised_value as that basic value times the condition rating, rounded to two decimal places as currency. Pair the result with your own location rating or claim notes if the assignment requires them; this endpoint multiplies the three factors you send and does not invent a fourth.
Where a tree value calculator earns its keep
Consulting arborists writing a formal appraisal can paste the three factors from a field sheet and attach the returned appraised_value to the report, then apply any extra location or installation adjustments in prose rather than inside an opaque spreadsheet cell.
Technical questions
How do I calculate the monetary value of a tree?
Send non-negative numbers for area (cross-sectional trunk area), species_value_factor (currency per unit area), and condition_rating (a decimal fraction). The API returns appraised_value = area × species_value_factor × condition_rating.
What does the tree value calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
