Sheep gestation calculator

A ewe bred on January 1, 2026 is due around May 28, 2026: the calculator adds the standard 147-day sheep gestation to the breeding day so you can plan lambing pens, night watches and colostrum. Free in your browser.

This sheep gestation calculator estimates a ewe's expected lambing date from the calendar day she was bred and the conventional one-hundred-forty-seven-day mean ovine gestation. You enter the breeding date as a strict YYYY-MM-DD string. The tool adds one hundred forty-seven whole civil days with proleptic Gregorian arithmetic—no host clock, no network, no randomness—and returns the estimated due date as an ISO calendar day.

How ovine gestation becomes a lambing due date

Commercial flocks and stud breeders quote sheep pregnancy in two related ways, and mixing them is the usual source of a wrong lambing date. From a known service or artificial-insemination day, the mean interval to lambing is about one hundred forty-seven days, with most ewes delivering in a band from roughly one hundred forty-two through one hundred fifty-two days depending on breed, litter size, nutrition, and whether the lamb is a singleton or a twin.

From the first day a ram is turned out with the ewes, the interval is wider, because the true conception day may lag the turnout date by a full seventeen-day cycle or more. Meat, wool, and dairy breeds sit close to that mean; Finnsheep and some prolific crosses can run a few days shorter, while some terminal sire lines run a day or two longer, but one hundred forty-seven remains the industry average taught in husbandry texts and printed on flock calendars. The path is educational and deterministic.

Flock lambing calendar

Record the service or AI day, pin the one-hundred-forty-seven-day due date on the shed board, and schedule night watches before the first ewe is due.

Smallholder and youth-project planning

Estimate when a backyard ewe may lamb so a jug pen, heat lamp, and colostrum are ready before the due date.

What if the breeding date is not a real calendar day?

Impossible days such as 2026-02-29, a missing field, or a non-YYYY-MM-DD string are not billed.

Why 147 days and not a range?

Most ewes lamb around 142–152 days, but flock calendars use the 147-day mean as the point estimate when the breeding day is known. This landing returns that estimate; scanning and clinical signs still refine the window on farm.

Does ram turnout count as the breeding date?

Only if you treat turnout as a known service day. If the ram ran with the ewes for a cycle or more, conception may lag turnout, so the due date is an earliest-case estimate, not a confirmed scan.

What does the sheep gestation calculator cost?

The browser tool is free and runs offline.

Do breed or twins change the lambing date?

They can shift it by a few days. Most ewes lamb between about 142 and 152 days after service, depending on breed, litter size and nutrition; Finnsheep and some prolific crosses can run a few days shorter.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

How ovine gestation becomes a lambing due date

This calculator encodes the planning convention used when the breeding day is known: due_date is breeding_date plus one hundred forty-seven whole Gregorian days. It does not replace ultrasound scanning at mid-gestation, ram-harness crayon marks, or a veterinarian's advice for an individual ewe, and it never reads the server clock, so two machines in different time zones produce the same JSON for the same breeding day.

Input contract, calendar validation, and response shape

Years are accepted from 0001 through 9999 so historical flock records and future breeding plans share one parser. A leap-year breeding such as twenty twenty-four February twenty-ninth still lands on a real July day because the extra February day is counted. Failed validation is never charged. POST a JSON body with breeding_date, a real Gregorian calendar day in YYYY-MM-DD form. Aliases breed_date, mating_date, and date are accepted so spreadsheets and flock-management forms can map columns without renaming. The day must exist: twenty twenty-six February twenty-nine, month thirteen, and day thirty-two of April are all invalid_input, as are missing values, empty strings, and any shape that is not four digits, a hyphen, two digits, a hyphen, and two digits. On success the body echoes the normalized breeding_date, reports gestation_days as one hundred forty-seven, returns due_date as the estimated lambing day, and includes a short formula reminder. Example: breeding_date two thousand twenty-six January first yields due_date two thousand twenty-six May twenty-eighth because one hundred forty-seven civil days after the first of January land on the twenty-eighth of May in a non-leap year. Successful API calls use prepaid balance at the published $0.002 base price with unit item.

Where a sheep gestation calculator earns its keep

Commercial sheep operations use a sheep gestation calculator to turn a recorded breeding day into a lambing-pen deadline, a night-watch roster, and a calendar hold for the shepherd and the veterinarian. Smallholders and youth livestock projects estimate when a backyard ewe may lamb so heat lamps, colostrum, and a jug pen are ready before the first lamb. Prefer a dedicated days-between tool when you only need calendar distance without the ovine gestation model; prefer this capability when the output must be a lambing point estimate from a known breeding day. The free browser tool runs entirely offline in your session; the API charges only successful solves at $0.002, keeps no durable copy of the breeding date after the response, and returns the same ISO fields every time so local goldens match production.

Livestock-app unit tests

Generate known-good leap-year and non-leap fixtures plus a deliberate invalid February twenty-ninth so mobile and API paths never disagree on a lambing date.

How does the sheep gestation calculator estimate the lambing date?

It adds 147 whole Gregorian days to the breeding date with civil-day arithmetic and returns that calendar day as due_date, the conventional mean ovine gestation from a known service or AI day.
