SAT total score combiner
A Reading and Writing score of 640 plus a Math score of 700 gives an SAT total of 1340. Enter both section scores, each from 200 to 800 in steps of ten, and an impossible value such as 705 is refused. Free in your browser.

College Board reports the SAT as two section scores—Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (often called Reading and Writing on the digital SAT) and Math—each on a 200–800 scale in steps of ten. The headline number students and colleges talk about is the total, simply the sum of those sections, ranging from 400 to 1600. This SAT total score combiner accepts both official section scores, validates them against the published range and step, and returns the composite total with the same arithmetic every admissions guide uses. Use it after a practice test, when reconciling a score report, or when an LMS needs a deterministic oracle that never invents a total outside the legal band.
How the SAT total is built from section scores
The modern SAT composite is not a mysterious weighted blend: it is the straight sum of the two section scores. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing covers reading comprehension, craft and structure, and standard English conventions across the verbal modules; Math covers algebra, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis, and geometry or trigonometry depending on the form. College Board scales each section independently onto 200 through 800 using ten-point increments, so a reported verbal of 640 and a math of 700 always mean a total of 1340.
There is no optional essay in the current digital design, and there is no third section that still enters the total. Percentiles and superscoring policies sit outside this arithmetic: a school may recombine your best section sittings across dates, but each sitting’s official total is still section plus section. This capability encodes only that addition, with hard checks that each input is an integer multiple of ten inside the legal section band.
Where a SAT section combiner earns its keep
Counselors and tutoring platforms recompute totals after practice modules so students see the same 400–1600 number they will see on a real score report. College-readiness dashboards store section scores separately for diagnostics, then call a deterministic combiner when exporting a single composite for scholarships, athletic eligibility, or state accountability files. Exam-prep generators need an oracle that rejects illegal section values instead of producing a plausible but impossible total that a buggy grader might treat as success.
Failed validation does not consume balance. Keep requests small, pin the integer total in tests, and you get reproducible composites for LMS plugins, counseling CRMs, and edge workers without standing up a full admissions data warehouse.
What you can do with it
Practice test score reports
After a timed practice SAT, enter EBRW and Math section scores to show the same 400–1600 total students expect on official College Board reports.
Counseling and admissions dashboards
Store section scores for diagnostics, then combine them into one composite when exporting eligibility, scholarship, or application packages.
LMS and exam-prep auto-grading
Validate that generated section scores stay on the 200–800 step-10 scale and that the composite total is the exact sum, not a rounded guess.
FAQ
How is the SAT total score calculated from sections?
Add the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (Reading and Writing) section score to the Math section score. Each section is 200–800 in steps of 10; the total is 400–1600.
What inputs does the SAT total score combiner require?
Both must be whole multiples of 10 between 200 and 800 inclusive.
What if a section score is 705 or 645?
Official SAT section scores only use 10-point steps, so non-multiples of 10 are rejected rather than rounded silently.
Does this tool superscore across test dates?
No. It combines one pair of section scores into one total.
Does the SAT essay count toward the total score?
No. The current digital SAT has no optional essay and no third section that enters the total, so the total is simply Reading and Writing plus Math, between 400 and 1600.

Technical notes
The free browser path and the paid API share one pure module, so homework checks and production scripts always agree.
How the SAT total is built from section scores
If either section is missing, non-numeric, below 200, above 800, or not a multiple of ten, the task fails with invalid_input instead of silently clamping or inventing a total. That fail-closed contract matches how score reports work: you either have two legal section scores or you do not yet have a reportable composite.
Input contract, response shape, and validation rules
Values must be whole numbers from 200 through 800 inclusive and multiples of ten—the same step College Board uses on official reports. Edge cases such as both sections at the floor (200 + 200 = 400) or both at the ceiling (800 + 800 = 1600) are accepted and returned without special casing. Out-of-range sections, fractional scores like 645, and non-multiples of ten such as 705 fail validation and are not billed. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers: reading_writing (aliases ebrw, rw, evidence_based_reading_writing, reading_and_writing, verbal) and math (aliases m, math_section, mathematics). Each value may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string. On success the response echoes the cleaned section scores, the total, the section band constants section_min and section_max (200 and 800), the total band constants total_min and total_max (400 and 1600), a short formula string total = reading_writing + math, and method sat_section_sum so clients can label the algorithm without reverse-engineering. Example: reading_writing 640 and math 700 yields total 1340.
