SAT score calculator

A 720 in Reading and Writing plus a 750 in Math gives a combined SAT total of 1470 out of 1600. Each section is checked against the official 200 to 800 range before adding. Free in your browser.

This SAT score calculator adds your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section score to your Math section score and returns the official combined total on the 400 to 1600 scale. Students, counselors, and parents use it after a practice test or an official score report when they need the combined number without doing the arithmetic by hand. Each section must be an integer from 200 to 800; any value outside that range is rejected as invalid input. The engine is pure finite arithmetic with no network calls, no sampling, and no date-dependent shortcuts. Small checks you may already know include seven hundred twenty plus seven hundred fifty yielding one thousand four hundred seventy, and two perfect eight hundreds yielding one thousand six hundred.

What your SAT total tells you

The SAT total score on the current College Board scale is the sum of two section scores: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, often abbreviated EBRW or simply Reading and Writing on digital score reports, and Math. Each section is reported as an integer from 200 to 800, so the combined total always lies between 400 and 1600.

This SAT score calculator does not estimate a section from raw item counts, does not apply a concordance table from an older SAT or from the ACT, and does not invent percentiles or college-admission cutoffs. It performs one transparent addition after validating both section scores against the official 200 to 800 window. Official College Board reports typically use ten-point increments, but this engine accepts any integer inside the closed interval so practice-test dashboards and hand-entered worksheets still compute.

There is no hidden curve, no superscoring across sittings, and no leftover essay or SAT Subject Test from retired editions.

Where SAT-total thinking fits in counseling, teaching, and software

People meet SAT totals when a junior finishes a digital practice test and wants the combined number next to last month's sitting, when a counselor builds a comparison sheet for a whole caseload, or when a parent checks whether a superscore they computed by hand actually matches the two printed section scores on the official report. Admissions tutors use the same addition when they ask a student to type two section scores and the interface must show a clean 400 to 1600 total without a hidden concordance.

Developers call the contract from scripts to seed deterministic test vectors for college-planning calculators, to normalize user-entered Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math before a dashboard, or to satisfy product-challenge statements that demand a total field rather than a hand-waved sum. Contest and homework practice often needs a fast, offline source of totals so solutions can be checked without opaque spreadsheet macros under time pressure.

Product and education tools use the sum when a learner types two section scores and the page must show a clean combined figure next to a target college range.

Practice test to combined total

Add Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math from a Bluebook or paper practice sitting to get the official 400–1600 SAT total.

How is the SAT total score calculated?

Provide two integer section scores on the current SAT scale. The combined result lies between 400 and 1600.

Does this convert the old 2400 SAT or an ACT score?

No. It only adds the two current-scale section scores you supply. Concordance from the retired 2400 SAT or from the ACT is out of scope.

What does the SAT score calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page.

What is a perfect SAT score in the result?

A perfect current-scale SAT is 1600 (800 + 800).

Can I enter a section score that is not a multiple of ten?

Yes. Official score reports usually move in ten-point steps, but the calculator accepts any whole number from 200 to 800, which helps with practice tests and hand-filled worksheets.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

What the SAT total means and what the response contains

A reading_writing score of 720 and a math score of 750 therefore become a total of 1470; two 800s become a perfect 1600; two 200s become the scale floor of 400. Anything below 200 or above 800 on either section is rejected as invalid_input, because it cannot be a reported SAT section score on this scale. The response echoes both section scores, the combined total, the 400 to 1600 scale bounds, a boolean is_perfect that is true only at 1600, and the formula string total equals reading_writing plus math.

How section scores are read and how the total stays reproducible

Both are required integers. After parsing, each section is checked against the closed interval from 200 to 800 inclusive. A 199, an 801, a zero, or a 1600 placed in a section slot is rejected because those numbers are not legal SAT section scores—1600 is the combined total, not a section. Missing either field also fails. The preferred fields are reading_writing for the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section and math for the Math section. Aliases ebrw, erw, rw, ebrw_score, and reading_and_writing are accepted for the first field, and math_score and mathematics for the second, so spreadsheets, query strings, and typed forms can reuse the same contract. Each value may arrive as a JSON number or as a trimmed integer string; empty strings, non-finite values, and non-integers fail with invalid_input naming the field so a bad cell does not become a wrong SAT total. On success the body returns reading_writing, math, total as their sum, scale_min 400, scale_max 1600, is_perfect when the total is 1600, and the formula string. Optional output keys are never sent as null: is_perfect is always a boolean, so it is always present. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical mathematical result inside an automated pipeline without re-implementing the addition yourself. Through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002; failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns.

Where SAT-total thinking fits in counseling, teaching, and software

On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog and lets you move from a classroom demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result. Pair it with other life and education endpoints when you are building a small lab of free, deterministic college-planning helpers.

Apps and test fixtures

Normalize user-entered EBRW and Math into a stable total field for college-planning UIs, property tests, and CI assertions.

What range is allowed for each SAT section?

Each of reading_writing and math must be an integer from 200 to 800 inclusive. A value outside that window is rejected as invalid_input.
